The British refuse the overture. They still want revenge for the attack on Fort Loudoun. -------- May 28th -------- 1830: Andrew Jackson, called "Sharp Knife" by the Indians, has long fought the Indians of the southeast. He believes that the Indians and white settlers will not be able to peacefully live together. His solution to this is to renege on all of the previous treaties, which granted the Indians their lands forever, and to move all Indians west of the Mississippi River. Jackson makes this proposal to Congress during his 1st Congressional speech on December 8, 1829. Congress will make the proposal into a law on this date. -------- May 29th -------- 1792: Today, William Blount will hold a conference with 2000 CHEROKEE and CHICKAMAUGA Chiefs and warriors at the village of Coyatee. He will denounce the CHICKAMAUGAs for murder, looting and horse stealing. The CHICKAMAUGA Chiefs will promise to stop any such incursions. But they will continue. -------- May 30th -------- 1540: de Soto's Army arrives in the CHEROKEE village of Guasili, modern day Murphy, in western North Carolina, today. This will be the first recorded meeting between CHEROKEEs and Europeans. The CHEROKEEs will give de Soto 300 dogs to be used as food. De Soto's chroniclers will describe the village as having 300 homes and wide streets. -------- May 31st -------- 1785: Today, a group of inexperienced Chiefs meet with people from the state of "Franklin" to discuss land at Dumplin Creek on the French Broad River. Led by Chief Ancoo of Chota, who was representing Old Tassel, signed a treaty without fully understanding its meaning. Ancoo knew they were discussing land; but, he did not realize he had signed a document allowing settlers who had illegally homesteaded CHEROKEE lands to remain there. The treaty ceded a great deal of land east of the ridge which divided the Little Tennessee River. This treaty would be repudiated by the CHEROKEEs almost immediately, since Ancoo had no authority to sign it. The state of "Franklin" will be represented by its Governor, John Sevier. 1834: Today will mark the last edition of the CHEROKEE Phoenix. Started 8 years earlier, the finacially troubled publication will cease to be published. -------- June 1st -------- 1773: In Augusta, Georgia, today CREEKs and CHEROKEEs will sign a treaty with England. The agreement will give over 2 million acres to the Europeans. This ceding of lands will eradicate debts owed by the Indians. Many Europeans were already squatting on the lands, anyway. Some sources say this treaty was signed on June 3rd. 1830: Georgia laws now apply to the CHEROKEE. -------- June 2nd -------- 1767: According to some reports, a conference is held today by representatives of the British and the CHEROKEEs to discuss boundary lines. 1788: Today, forces under General John Sevier, will attack the CHEROKEE village of Hiwassee. The American forces will be victorious, with many of the CHEROKEEs fleeing the area. The village will be burned. -------- June 3rd -------- 1830: Today, the Governor of Georgia will declare the laws passed on December 19, 1829 to officially be in effect. These laws would extend Georgia sovereignty over most of CHEROKEE lands in the state. Indians could no longer be witnesses in any court in the state. All CHEROKEE laws are now nullified. It would be illegal to try to keep an Indian from emigrating to Indian Territory. Since gold had been discovered on CHEROKEE lands, the Governor declared that all CHEROKEE lands now belonged to the state, including the gold mines.
