    3. Descendants of James C. Martin Generation No. 1 1. JAMES C.5 MARTIN (*JOSEPH4, *JOSEPH3, *WILLIAM2, *JOHN1) was born abt 1780 in Chittiko, Cherokee Nation East [now Monroe co., TN.], and died abt 1847 in Goingsnake Dist. Now OK. [died spring of 1847]. He married NANI DOSHD. She was born abt 1810 in Cherokee Nation East, and died abt 1846 in Goingsnake Dist. now OK.. Notes for JAMES C. MARTIN: Emmet Starr says that James Martin was taken to Virginia to be raised by his father, but was a disappointment to his family. article edited by Adelaide Lisettta Fries in the North Carolina Historical Review which is quoted as follows: [10 November 1799] a half-Indian, [really 1/4 for his mother was 1/2] Martin, son of the General Martin with who Br. Schneider stayed formerly in Chittiko, arrived today. We asked him if he remembered the visit of Br. Schneider, sixteen years ago? He said no, that he was born in Chittiko, but was only nineteen years old now, and was therefore very young at the time. He told us that his father was now in Henry Co., Virginia, and that his mother was living in Wakowee on the Hiwassee River; he asked us to visit her as he knew that our visit would please her and she would be happy to serve us. We heard later, the he, like Price, did not have the best character, and that they drink brandy. In his book Emmet Starr indicates that James had no children, but in some of his earlier, unpublished records he lists the following sons, all by different unnamed mothers: Samuel Martin [father of Belle Martin who married James Collins], Wiley Martin and Joseph Martin [who married Melvina Bateman and Fannie Biggs]. It seem possible that further research into Virginia records might shed some light on this information. 1835 Cherokee Indian Census of Tennessee Chestooa Creek, McMinn Co. James Martin-One quarterblood. A farmer and reader of English. From DESCENDANTS OF NANCY WARD by David Keith Hampton Bounty Land Claim Files of James Martin by David Hampton From Newsletter of the Descendants of Nancy Ward Feb 2000 Volume 8 number 1 In 1855, the United States began taking claims from the persons who had served the United States in wars and were being given bounty lands. Minor heirs and widows of those decesed were also eligible to receive the land. Many Native Americans made claim. For the Cherokee, most of the claimants consisted of those who had served in the Creek war of 1813-1814 and in the Seminole Wars in Flordia in the 1830s. Claims were recently copied at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. for the minor heirs of James Martin, grandson of Nancy Ward. Previously to this discoverey, it had been believed that James Martin had no children. However, we now know that he had a daughter with the name of Gu-yu-ne-gu Martin. The use of a Cherokee name might indicate that her mother was a full-blood, but that is not certain. James Martin was enumerated on the 1835 Cherokee census where it was indicated that he was living alone, so he may have married shortly thereafter, perhaps in Indian Territory. His daughter was born about 1840 according to these records. I have been unable to identify Goo-ne-gu Martin or her gardian, Tah-chun-sy, on the 1851 Drennen Roll or Old Settler Roll, though it is apparent that they were both living at that time. Some of the doctuments from this file is reproduced here. Certain Punctuation and abbreviations have been edited for chlarity. I would like to thank Jack Baker for providing the copies of these records. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CLAIM OF GU-YU-NE-GOO, MINOR HEIR OF JAMES MARTIN Indian Territory, Cherokee Agency. But I have a Martha Martin married to Whitson Collins/Collinsworth (just found proof of the name change made by his father Zachariah Collins) Martha's father is Isaac or Frank Martin married to Nancy Ellison.
