    1. Re: [CherokeeGeneCommunity] Robert Goudey
    2. Joy King
    3. In this material I see the following: "Not that the Cherokee were reading the name Gouedy, but Robert Gouedy lived among them for 40 or 50 years and surely had many children but no Cherokee "Gouedy" families are known." According to Robert L. Meriwether's, THE EXPANSION OF SOUTH CAROLINA 1729-1765, 132. The Cherokee trade brought within reach of the Saluda settlers what was probably the largest store above the fall line, and made Robert Goudey the most important man, next to Francis, in the valley. Goudey first appears in the Cherokee trade about 1747, and was actively engaged in it for several years. In 1751 he came from the upper Cherokees with a hundred horse loads of skins. But two years after Herman Geiger's death he had a store at Ninety Six and was thereafter merchant rather than trader, carrying on enterprises larger, perhaps, than those of any other Indian merchant save Patrick Brown himself. 41. He sent out one trader with goods worth three thousand pounds of skins, and in 1758 got judgment against Cornelius Daugherty for fifteen hundred pounds sterling. He had already the year before gone into the Cherokee country with two constables and six men and carried away four slaves from Daugherty in the night. When he died in 1775 or 1776 there were about four hundred persons in debt to him; some of the accounts, however, were of men dead fifteen years. By his will he left his property to his wife, son and daughter, but gave to his three Indian daughters a small sum of money each. 42 41. JC, July 18, 1748 (letter of Ludovick Grant), June 5, 1751, July 6, 1753 (statement of Elliott). An impressive sketch of a house "the forest, belonging to Mr. Gowdie" appears on the plat of the Simpson-Murray tract (above, p.127, n.25) on the east bank of the Saluda and nearly opposite the upper corner of the tract. Note "the forest" of P, V, 411, and "Windsor Forest" of JC, June 7, 1751. 42 JC, June 5, 1751; Indian Books, V, 44, VI, 105-109 (letters of Grant and Demere); Court Records, Common Pleas, Feb. 1758 (Goudey vs. Cornelius Docharty); Wills, 1774-1779, pp.303-304; Inventories, 1774-1785, 195-208. There are additional entries for Robert Goudey in this book. Joy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joyce G. 3. Jims site carries the "traditionally" accepted information about Ludovic Grant. He began with Starr as his basis and has been adding the documentation and making corrections as the errors became evident. That's why I asked if anyone knew if that information came from Starr. Jim will tell you there is information that comes up in the course of his research all the time that disproves the "traditionally" accepted stories. You know how our family stories can be, the folks that gave Starr their information for inclusion in his book were just the same. They didn't always give him the truth, they sometimes gave him the glamorized version of it. And some of it was just outright wrong. We've all had that experience, eh? The story about Ludovic Grant just doesn't add up. If he were, in fact, a clan chief, that would appear in the documentation. By the time he lived, they were keeping good records. The clan chiefs were usually Barons, Baronets, Lords, Knights, and so on after a certain point and their records appear in the Peerage and Baronage records. He simply does not appear in any of them, nor is there any way to connect him to those lines. The Aristocracy was as bad as anybody else, an maybe worse, about wanting to prove who they descended from. They all wanted to prove descent form royal families. But these two are well documented. For Trader Ludovic to be who he is said to be, there would be in one and usually more of these records. Even the illegitimate offspring of the Noble and Aristocratic houses were acknowledged and often raised to positions of prominence, just like their legitimate half-siblings. Witness to that is the clan Grant of Glenmoriston, whose progenitor is said to be the "natural son" of the 2d Laird of Feruchie. They gained a Barony in their own right. This is probably going to be one of those lines we'll have to ask about in the "Stupid Question Booth" on the other side of eternity! Happy time travels! Susan

    3. There has to be a direct line of daughter to mother to grandmother to great grandmother on back for the NA markers to show up in the female line. So, if it was your father's mother that carried the NA blood from a female ancestor in an unbroken female line, it will show. If the blood comes through your father's paternal side, it will not show in your aunt as it is then father to daughter or mother to son and the tests do not yet check for the markers in those relationships. 1. Re: [CherokeeGeneCommunity] Ludovic Grant
    2. 1. LUDOVIC2 GRANT (JOHN1 GRAUNT) was born Abt. 1698 in Scotland, and died 1755 in Charleston, SC. He married (1) ELIZABETH TASSEL in CNE [TN], daughter of KAHYUN TECHEA. She was born Abt. 1706 in CNE [TN], and died in CNE [TN]. He married (2) UNKNOWN 1726. She was born Abt. 1700. Notes for LUDOVIC GRANT: On page 466, Starr states that Ludovic Grant married a woman of the Long Hair Clan; however, on page 561and 563 it states that he married a member of the Wolf Clan. (Two wives, or a typo?) He was the Clan Chief of the Grant holdings in Scotland and they lost the war in the Jacobite Rebellion. They were captured by the British at Preston and banished to the New World. Ludovic arrived on the Susannah and moved in with the Cherokee, his cousins all went to Boston and the Caribbian area. Sir Alexander Cuming, in his brief Journal which appeared in the Historical Register of London for 1731, described his adventures in the Cherokee Nation in 1730 when, with the aid of Ludovic Grant, he convinced seven young Cherokees (including future chief, Attakullakulla, the "Little Carpenter") to visit England and King George II. In a statement recorded on page 301 of the Charlestown, South Carolina probate court in the book of "1754-1758" in a sworn statement of January 12, 1756, says, "It is about thirty years since I went into the Cherokee Country where I have resided ever since" "I speak their language".
