    1. Re: [CherokeeGeneCommunity] JESSE LEE- "D114b heir of Thomas Lee-Rising Fawn" 3/4 blood

    3. I think there is a good possibility you might find your Jesse Lee associated with the following group from the 1851 Drennen Roll: Tahlequah 311: Samuel Lea, Na Kee Lea, Rising Fawn Lea, Alsey Lea, Adam Lea I have no way of telling from this list what the relationships are, but the name Rising Fawn sure caught my eye. It might not mean anything at all, too, but from Jim Hicks' site Thomas Lee had a daughter Nakie that married Thompson Sanders. Their daughter Mary Jane married Jack Lock Langley and their daughter Lucinda Langley Johnson is on the Miller Roll application 11781, roll number 15485. Perhaps her application will go back far enough. Some of them have much more information than was strictly required, some have less. Does anyone have Sandi Garrett's "Only the Names Remain" for Tahlequah district? If so, would you please see if there are any Miller cross references for this group? That might be a big help! Blessings! Susan

    3. James Armstrong Lea c. 1817-1848 is connected to the Nancy Ward line and a Nakie Lee c. 1813-1870 appears to be connected to the Sanders line. In the Ross-McDonald-Shorey line I also found an Esther Lee, daughter of Ned Lee and Ta-ka-taw-nee (a full-blood Cherokee) circa 1848, married to Riley Keys per Eastern Cherokee Application #5195. He died on 5 June 1884 probably at Tahlequah District, Indian Territory and is buried in Ross Cemetary, Park Hill. (I have a photo of his tombstone). In the same line a Margaret Lee, daughter of Thomas Lee and Mary Holmes, c. 1872 married John Edward Gunter who also married Mary Lee, daughter of Walter Lee and Lucinda Brewer, c. 1874. Gunter is buried at Pack-Faulkner Cemetary in Muldrow, OK. There are more Lea's and Lee's but we need to know if any of these are your line first. ~Jerri A Ross-Mulkey-Hembree descendent~ --------------------------------- Yahoo! I have NO idea which Thomas yet. There has been a history by genealogists that JESSE was the son of Long David LEE of Johnston County- BUT the genealogists are now admitting thewre were TWO lines of LEEs there. In addition I had a time sorting through ALL of the various JESSE LEEs there- even in our own line! 1. JESSE LEE- "D114b heir of Thomas Lee-Rising Fawn" 3/4 blood
    2. Previously I have posted many inquiries on our JESSE LEE, without much success. We know through family history he was Cherokee, and the name seems to carry on in various searches of the rolls. I tracked JESSEs brothers to ALA after leaving NC. (Aaron went to Burnt Corn ALA, which I have posted info on here before...) I was referred to James Hicks site and I found the following: More About JESSE LEE: 1836 Valuations: Cherokee Co, AL, #29 "3/4 blood" Detachment: Bet. October 19, 1838 - February 02, 1839, 05 Situwakee-Jones, on payroll as Teamster RG75, E247 Reg of Pmts: Abt. 1837, D114b heir of Thomas Lee (Rising Fawn) _http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/i/c/James-R-Hicks-VA/BOOK-0001/0 021-0047.html#IND11141REF59_ (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/i/c/James-R-Hicks-VA/BOOK-0001/0021-0047.html#IND11141REF59) This states he was a Teamster- which our JESSE has been reported as such, and also a Stage Coach driver. (WHAT exactly is a teamster?) I am uncertain what all these above code numbers mean? Can anyone help explain these and what step to take next?

    3. D114b=Doubtful Heir of Rising Fawn. Which Rising Fawn was it? There is one AKA as Standing Turkey (an error) and one with the anglo name of Major George Lowery Jr. Look at each record on Jim Hick's site of anyone mentioned connected with Jesse Lee. Then start looking at census'. Do a Boolean search for "Jesse Lee + Cherokee". Do the same Google for pictures. Look at Family Tree's to give you clues but take nothing for granted. Triple-check everything for yourself. Join ancestry groups and put out your query. Send anyone that seems connected to the name you are searching emails. Go to the LDS site. There are lots of things you can do without waiting for someone to drop the information in your lap. Don't get mad when no one else does what you yourself are capable of doing. Professional genealogists charge lots of money. Be grateful whatever gains you make through free groups, like this one. Most of all, get primary source documents. You can send to the National Archives in Ft. Worth Texas for the record of Jesse Lee since you have the record number. Check out their website. Happy hunting. God and genealogists love those who help themselves. ;) ~Jerri --------------------------------- Yahoo! FareChase - Search multiple travel sites in one click.

    3. Hey all I have come across some information stating my great great grandmother Mary Matilda Lett's brother William Lett has a descendant that has served as a Cherokee Chief or assistant chief. I've seen it as both actually. The problem is I do not have a time frame or a location. Any advice on how to find this? I'm worried because there are some recognized national tribes, some state recognized but national and some that are not recognized at all (of which you all know). SHEESH...any advice would be helpful. The name is Flora Lou Lett. Thanks Sharon Griffin-Cobb

    3. I'm not sure who it was on this list, but seems I recall someone looking for Shirley information. I recently found some information looking for my ancestors. As most of you know, my family story is that my great great grandmother Mary Lett was cherokee. The best I have determined her mother was a Shirley. If this information is correct, this Shirley lady also had a son who's line claims the same percentage cherokee as my line yet the lines didn't know about each other. As a matter of fact, I've just found this information and the lady researching that line, seems to have disappeared. At any rate, I found some information on Native American Shirley's. I don't see any connection to mine at this time but...I'll keep poking around. 3. Greetings! Courtesy of www.accessgenealogy.com we find the following: Tribe Last First Middle Age Sex Blood Card Roll Misc Type Cherokee Rogers Mary J 64 F IW 10010 NR ADAIR BB Cherokee Strickland Elizabeth 0 F 10010 P Cherokee Strickland Isaac 0 M 10010 P This shows Isaac and Elizabeth as Mary J. Rogers' parents. Mary J had originally applied under card D813 (Doubtful813), probably awaiting confirmation of her marriage to whichever Mr. Rogers she married. With there being no roll number on the regular census card, she may have died before a roll number was issued and an allotment could be given her. I do find a Mary J Rogers of the right age on the 1900 census in Cherokee Nation, pages 84 & 84b, Township 22, Supvr Dist 73, ED24, lines 20 and 1-2. Her husband is listed as David and they had been married 44 years, so she would have been eligible as Cherokee by Marriage unless no affidavit could be produced. If she was rejected, she would have been on an R card for the final disposition. Mary J. Rogers was shown as born in GA, both parents born in GA. Go here for the roll information on this family: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/i/c/James-R-Hicks-VA/BOOK-0001/0007-0026.html#IND2000REF17 Mary J.;s parents and possibly grandparents should be listed on the application. The Cherokee in this family did not come through her bloodline, though. This is the card for Jacob Strickland as father to Phirena Harris. Apparently his Elizabeth remarried, either after his death or divorce. They were also apparently doubtful in the beginning but were transferred to a regular card with provision of the appropriate documents. Phirena is apparently a corruption of Pyrine. This couple had no children. They are on the 1900 census in Cherokee Nation Township 13, Supvr Dist 73, ED41, page 293b, lines 19-20: Tribe Last First Middle Age Sex Blood Card Roll Misc Type Cherokee Connelly Elizabeth 0 F 2030 P Cherokee Harris James S 65 M 1/8 2030 5297 BB Cherokee Harris Phirena 60 F IW 2030 248 BB Cherokee Harris Susan 0 F 2030 P Cherokee Harris William 0 M 2030 P Cherokee Strickland Jacob 0 M 2030 P Hope that helps some, Blessings, Susan Reynolds

    1. JACOB & ISSAC STRICKLAND - Dawes Enrollment Cards
    2. I have found these members of STRICKLAND Family in this list=- DAWES ENROLLMENT CARDS (pasted below)... Now how can I find the details on the actual cards??? Our STRICKLANDs were originally from the Isle of Wight VA into BERTIE/NASH/EDGECOMB and SAMPSON County NC. Many of our line migrated to GA & ALA around mid 1830s, carrying the same names. My direct line came back to NC and stayed here. There are so-o-o-o many JACOB & ISSAC STRICKLANDs in our line- so how do I identify these in further detail??? And from VA, NC or GA? My grandfathers oral history:We know there is much Cherokee blood in our Stricklands, but no known documentation as until my grandfather- they were mostly illiterate. My grandfather was mostly self taught in literacy) My grandfather looked def. NA and spoke Cherokee phrases and greetings so it cant be too far removed. He always said his mother was also 1/2 Cherokee- but after finding her family of LEEs- [Long David LEE /Jessie LEE line] I cant seem to pin it down on any documentation. (Most Census they were unlisted in race column, and later as white). We know many Cherokee STRICKLANDs are now in Oklahoma, as my grandfather was there back in the 30s-40s (sometime in that period.) . I am not certain how they got there (on the trail???)- again no written records such as bibles are avail with their names. Any of you OK. STRICKLANDs on this list??? My grandfather also told me his family was extremely angry over some of the SAMPSON County/ROBESON County NC Cherokee members who chose to band with the LUMBEE instead of CHEROKEE over recognition/rights in the early 1900s.(Sampson & Robeson are side by side and reading the early Census in ORIGINAL PAGE ORDER, I discovered they were living very close.. I have recently discovered there was an official designation in the early 1900s of THE CHEROKEE INDIANS of ROBESON COUNTY, by the State of NC. Are there any known documents existing of these members?
