    2. Hi Derek, I was wondering what sur names you are researching. My relatives came from North Carolina, TN and MO. The names I am researching are Cates, Lindsey, and Sullivan. They don't sound Indian but somewhere back in time someone was. I may never know for sure, but it will keep me busy. ;>) I am sorry to hear about your accident, I hope your surgery goes well for you and you have a speedy recovery. Maureen

    3. I just am going to say this.My Mother's Mother and Dad's Father are part Indain, according to the family. But,just because my Dad's father is part Indian, does not mean my paternal dna ancestral line will be native american indian. He did get it,from His father, but if his father's father's father's father, and so on isn't Indian, just on the male line all of the way back it will not say my paternal line is N.A.Indian. And my Grandmother got almost all of her N.A.Indian from her father.I have never bought a dna test.I have thought about it alot.I have done alot of genealogy,on my family.I am about 26 years old.I have done family researchI can't walk until I have a knee surgery, because of a major accident, but you might not be reading this,so I'm not going to go on,especially about another topic.Even though, alot of my native american ancestors put white,on the census,I know that I'm native by ancestry, not just because of family tradition, but the way my family looks. However,I don't think it is all Cherokee. My Native American ancestors,I have found, lived in Florida,Georgia, and North Carolina. If you are reading this I am sorry to bore you.I was hit by a truck,as a pedestrian, and can not walk, until I have a knee surgery,The days are longer.Anyways, maybe we can chat sometime.Have a good one. I have had the family story handed down to me but no real proof. My Indian ancestry came from my father's side of the family and unless I can find a male cousin willing to take the DNA test, I'm out of luck. I am only looking for myself and not to gain anything. 3. Hi Alli, Would you please do a look-up for me regarding my surnames: Hawk and Hoar? We have had family gossip down through the years that we have Cherokee Indian blood - but nothing on paper for proof. My gggrandmother was the daughter of James Hoar and Jane (Jennie) Bronson, I have a picture of my gggrandmother Sarah Hoar that was drawn and colored, she is portrayed as a full blooded Indian. But I cannot find any information on my Jennie Bronson's family other than her father's name was Benjamin and James Hoar's family - the only information I have is that he was born either in Massachussetts or New Hampshire sometime between the late 1790's to 1801. His cousin was said to have been George Frisbie Hoar - the first senator of Massachussetts. But I know from reading that long long ago the Indians sometimes took on a white person's last name and the Hoar family of Massachussetts - housed and helped many many Native American Indians. I would appreciate any help that you could give to me. Thank you, Tonya ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alli" <iamcheroke@gmail.com> To: <CherokeeGene-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 09, 2006 10:31 PM Subject: Re: [CherokeeGeneCommunity] White Surname Genealogy > If you can give me a list of the names in your tree on the side of the > Cherokee, I'll see if I can help open some doors for you (so to speak) :) > > You never know it could be your White line, but I like to check out all the > possible names in case its another one that leads to the Cherokee. The latest addition to our websites is Jesuits in North America in the Seventeenth Century http://www.nanations.com/jesuits_in_north_america.htm This is going to take us a while to get online as it is over 30 chapters and each one is quite long. The Introduction of about 10 pages, provides a tremendous amount of information of many tribes in the United States and Canada. It is our plan to add 5 new chapters a week, so please keep coming back to learn more on this period in North American History. 1. Re: [CherokeeGeneCommunity] CHEEK RESERVATION ALABAMA - WILKINS
    2. Susan Reynolds
    3. According to the USGS http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic, Cheek Reservation is in Marshall County. The Tiger Map service shows it as a speck in the middle of Lake Guntersville and lists it as a "reserve" making me thing it is probably a wildlife reserve. All that being said, there was a Catharine Cheek who received a reservation of 640 acres of land under the treaty of 1817. I don't know if it was in AL or not, but the current Cheek Reservation is right in the middle of the old Cherokee Nation. It could perhaps have been hers. I would imagine someone in Guntersville might know the origins of the name. A word of caution about the land reservations: they were only good for the lifetime of the reservee or until they abandoned the land (which some took to mean if they left it for any length of time, then someone else would grab it). There were very few of the Cherokee reservees that held their land in fee simple, meaning they actually owned it and could pass it down to their children. All others were only temporary and could not be passed down in the family. For this reason, I think Cheek Reservation probably does not apply to a Native American land reservation, but some other. Blessings, Susan

    3. Michelle, I remember when I was a child (too many years ago), I will never forget all the jokes "about the traveling salesman who passed thru town". There were many families of dark complexion kids born to fair skin, light haired parents. Obviously both parents had N A ancestors a few generations back and suddenly that blood line became the dominant line. My maternal grandpa had a grandma that was supposed to be 1/2 Cherokee and a grandpa from the other side of his family that was called 'black dutch" and that explains our native blood lines. There was also some native blood in my grandma also, but we haven't found just how far back it goes; however, all 13 children born to my grandparents having the combined blood lines and they really don't need further proof; however, I am still trying to find a surname for my grandpa's grandma. At least if gives us something to do in our old age.
