Is what this group is all about. Mainly finding current surname connections from last 300 or so years of America in the making. Not at all so much about history. Thats another group. We have 2 history groups . But when finding a brick wall person... Thats genealogy at its best. I have found so many living relations its hard to count. Over 400. But finding my brothers son after 63 years was awesum. I love to see folks do this. Thanks EagleLittle. Andbthe rest of the group. I have another quest. Its in the archives of several groups over 10 years and even the best of genealogists have never got close. Well Merry Christmas to the Christmas people and Happy Seasons to those who are strict on own ways. ;) Dan M
I assume they just saw the info & copied it or someone else found it and sent it in. At that time I had thought my great grandfather's name was Royce and so my inquiry was for Wilford Royce Stevens. Then I discovered Royce was a different person and I've never written that name before or since. Sorry, I really thought we were talking about Ancestry and didn't want to accuse Gen Web of anything. (I wrote a post to you almost an hour ago, but I guess it didn't show up, yet) On Sat, Dec 22, 2012 at 4:35 PM, Dj M <[email protected]> wrote: > Please clearify Gen Web. > Is not a part of Ancestry. Dan, thanks so much for keeping this site going. In the past, I've found some info here but mostly loads of encouragement and tips on how to search and what to ask. Earleene, I agree because I've had Ancestry do the same to me. I wrote an inquiry on GenWeb that contained a few errors and now Ancestry try to sell that misinformation back to me. However, Ancestry also contains millions of census & vital records and many of my family have trees there where they share information and misinformation. Usually, misinformation contains some clues about where or when to search in hopes of finding some vital record that adds to the picture of the puzzle. Findagrave seems to contain more accuracy because each person only has ONE memorial and you find it where the person was buried and most people were only buried once and every descendant or researcher adds to the person's known or believed information. Many of my ancestors are now correctly identified because distant cousins adding to the information found in grandma's bible and my baby book. Volunteers even go out and take photos of stones in the cemeteries (some on private property) and dig up stones that have been buried over a century ago or used to build a stone fence. At least 2 private cemeteries have been bought and landscaped when they were just overgrown jungles when I last visited. Volunteers do library lookups and with over 100,000,000 (thats over a hundred MILLION) memorials online that can be searched by name, family name, birth or death year or before or after certain dates or search by place of burial. I recently found an ancestor that was only identified by a few letters on his weathered stone: J---p --il-- (Joseph Smiley) (identified by his siblings and his parents buried in the same cemetery and partial dates on his stone) I hope this info will be helpful to everyone. I have an Ancestry acct. too, but not world wide....i can help out a bit too. that would be nice. It'd be nicer if they'd make sure the info. they gleen from other places (like the LDS FHC) has documentation to back it up before publicizing it. Course then again, it'd be nice if the LDS FHC would make it a requirement for documentation the first submission instead of for those who are trying to correct the wrong stuff that's being sold & spread around everywhere :) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Earleene" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, December 22, 2012 9:24 AM Subject: Re: [CherokeeGene] Are Any of the Paid Sites Having=OPENDOORtoSITE'S for the holidays like Ancestry.com did before? > what I dont like about that site, you send info to them then when they > advertise something you might be interested it turns out to be your own > info, they should let a person know where it came from

Any one that makes a business such as the many forums out there free or other wise have a reason for such. It is not a big deal that they sell it, most of what is sold it to people who are looking for info. Sort of a give and take. We give, they take. But they give back - so much more that makes it a valuable resource. I just was connected with 5 family members of variety and I found my sister a new cousin today of her dad that died when she was a baby. I found my nephew missing 63 years, today also I found my deceased uncles niece, we had lost all family connections 30 years. So those finds to me are worth my membership, I pay world wide subscription, I have helped many people find relation behind the group. So in the genealogy since it was not free, but is was productive. Since this list is a genealogy list, people ask for help, many people behind the list start grinding gears and looking up people, if they find things out, they contact the asker. That’s what makes this list work. First we use a proper subject line, then we use a query, then we wait. Some genealogy chatter occurs. Just not chitter chatter and useless comments. This is a seek and find help list, not a put down list, people ask a decent question, we give a decent reply. That’s how its spose to work. I personally could care less what Ancestry does, as long as it works. It took a lot of programming to make it work. So, if you want to help, please stick to just the facts. Works for me and others don’t spend time reading and deleting useless messages. AHO?
