    2. Osiyo Have a question please? , My great grt +granny was named Soco {sometimes spelled Soccro} Davis in Swain co NC. On no census or paper work found is her name anything else,{though many have speculated it to be fro Sophronia or something else}. Being as I have been led to believe in her native heritage,I was wondering if maybe I could get some help here? I know that "Wolf Town" is sometimes refered to as Soco and that Soco gap is near there. I was told that via the Smokey Mtn.Dialect of the Cherokee the word Soco means Corn. I am tring to find the real meaning of this name, and how -why the area is called Soco, and what is it's meaning ,as well as why was wolf town called Soco ??? I really believe there is some kind of connection of her name ,where she was born and the area's mentioned above. Could someone please help me on all this? Wado Morningstar

    3. Morningstar, Soco Creek: Sag wa hi= Sag wun yi= "One Place" Sa gwa = One+ hi or yi= locative Soco Gap: A ha lu na, A halunun yi, or Uni halu na = "Ambush" or "Where they were ambushed"; on the head of Soco creek on the line between Haywood and Swain County. Name derived from having been ambushed here by a large part of Shawano, and killed all but one , whose ears were cut off, after which, according to common custom, they released him to carry the news back to his people. Soco Creek is located on the East Cherokee Reservation in Jackson County. Wolftown is one of the communities as is Paintown that are located in Jackson and in the Soco area. Don't see where the corn came in, because in Cherokee corn is Selu. Sel-usti (for se--usti) - "corn's mother,"from selu, corn and usti, his mother.
