dear sherry huff:) maybe you and i are cousins? i am descended from huffs on my mama's side. they were from tennessee. my great great grandfather was born cherokee nation in tennessee 1829. the only record of that is from a census in arkansas 1860 something.. from our oral tradition, i know we are cherokee and low dutch or "black dutch" mixed blood. many people say the black dutch is a mix of different bloods.. that is probably right in my case. i know my gr gr grandfather and his family left east tennessee and moved out to arkansas with other family members when he was a little boy- i think about 5 or so maybe. there is a really neat lady named delores j huff. she is a professor out in oklahoma and she is cherokee. she is an educator and much of what she teaches to other educators is about na children and their education needs. she has a lot to say about self image and self love too:) she has written a couple of books- mostly textbooks. i emailed her at some point because i thought maybe she could help me with genealogy stuff since her name is huff too. she didnt know much about the genealogy stuff (but interestingly enough her mother has a very unusual name that is also my gr gr grndmother's same name) but she was really nice and also loving and wise, i thought. she said because of the assimilation of the people way back when, many of us will never find an official record of our connection to particular clans or families. she said though that we are all part of one family and that is what matters... i think she is right. for some of us there is no paper trail. i have been unable to find anything more than my gr gr grandfather's name on an american census with place of birth listed as cherokee nation/tennessee. pretty much i have given up on finding anything more... do you have stories passed down in your family? we could compare stories and see if anything jives.. i have those and they are very meaningful i think... and they are a source of comfort to my soul... also, i read as much as i can absorb about cherokee culture, beliefs, history and whatever i can get to read. is good for me and warms me up, ya know? i hope you can find your connections to family- if you find anything about the huff family, would you be sure to share the info with the board ;) thank you and good luck to you in your search.
