    1. [CHEROKEE-SURNAMES] CANTON surname
    2. Rod or Leslie
    3. Looking for my grandmother's family information regarding claims of Cherokee heritage. Grandma was born Helena Florence CANTON May 17, 1885 in Evansville Indiana. She was adopted by William H. and Mary Elizabeth Grismer Sterrett in June of 1893. This couple did not marry until that year as well. Granny told me when I was a small child that she was Cherokee - even though she was short, had auburn hair, and gray eyes. She used to tell me that I looked just like her mother but pictures of her adopted mother were not as I looked. Her adopted mother was short, blonde and blue eyed. Later I learned she was adopted and it all made sense. I am very tall and have brown-black hair and dark brown eyes. All grandma's children were dark haired and dark eyed or hazel eyed. Her husband was blonde and blue eyed so this made no sense to him that his children would be so dark. He divorced my grandmother and I am sure this is the reason. I have spent 30 years trying to trace who Granny was. The Vandenburg County records office doesn't have a birth certificate for her and claims that any records related to her adoption have been misplaced. CANTON is virtually impossible to research by word searching in any search engine since it brings up all the cities and parishes using the word Canton. If anyone knows anything about this name would appreciate the help. Leslie At this special season of the year, when family and friends gather, May the warm winds of Heaven blow softly on your home, And the Great Spirit bless all who enter there. Cherokee Blessing.
