My husband recalls stories when he was growing up that he was descended from Native American ancestors, but no one ever told him who these ancestors were. I have been working on his family tree for a year or so, and have been able to trace most of his lines back to English colonial settlers. However, I have not been able to trace his grandmother's FRENCH line beyond North Carolina in the late 1700s. Can anyone advise me as to whether "FRENCH" might have been a Cherokee surname? His family moved from North Carolina to South Carolina to Georgia and finally to southern Alabama by the mid-1800s. Thanks for any help anyone can give me!
