    2. Ann Devine
    3. I am looking for information on Tom or Thomas Johnson married to Maggie or Mattie Cameron. They were my great grandparents. I believe the Johnsons were part Cherokee. My grandfather told me they came from Alabama, but I have not found any information to verify this. They were found on either a 1900 or 1910 Mississippi census. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ann Devine

    1. [CHEROKEE-SURNAMES] Chief Wagstaff
    2. Roy Irvine
    3. I have a 4th great grandfather who married (according to family histories) the daughter of a Cherokee Chief named Wagstaff. Reference: Paul Gaskill, Jr., stayed in New York until he was ordained a Baptist Minister. He then went, as a missionary, to a tribe of Cherokee Indians living in the Smoky Mountains near Ashville, No. Carolina. These Indians had escaped and fled into the mountains during the period when the Federal Government was attempting to relocate the Cherokee west of the Mississippi River (1835-1842). While living with the Indians, Paul married the daughter of Chief Wagstaff, leader of the tribe. They left No. Carolina before the Indians were moved to Oklahoma over the Trail of Tears (1849). After his marriage, Paul and his Indian wife moved to St. Claire, Illinois. I would be interested to learn of any records of this Chief. Roy Irvine mailto:royandjane@hargray.com

    2. Hi Sandra, Would you share your Cherokee Rose family information with me? My first cousin has Rose on his mother's side of the family and Abshire too. We both have Rogers, Davidson and Hawkins if you are interested in them. I have been looking since 1995 and think I know about some of the Cherokee connection but I need to prove how we are related. On my father's side of the family is Black, Conway, Rogers and Kinney. Corntassel, Pumpkin, Grant, Emory, Fields are some of the names I was told to look for. I know who Corntassel was and I know that Pumpkin was his brother. I have translated a headstone written in Cherokee, that was sent to me by a distant Rogers cousin, that said Pumpkin. This headstone was in the Old Leach cemetery up around Kansas, OK where several of the Rogers are buried. I look forward to hearing from you. Ruth Kinney Townsley

    1. [CHEROKEE-SURNAMES] Looking for Nancy Redpath's heritage
    2. Pat Willman
    3. I cannot find any information about the life of Nancy Redpath before she married Isham Spence. On ancestry.com, her ID is 108708. Broderbund WFT Vol. 6, Tree #3939, Date of import: Apr 15, 1998. Her birthdate was listed as 1798 in Cherokee Nation, East Virginia. Her date of death was February 28th, 1859. Nancy and Isham had four children. Eli Spence June 29th, 1816 in Carroll County Virginia from which I descended, Mary M. Spence born in 1821, Nancy Spence born 1821, Susannah Spence born in 1823. Burwell Spence married Rebecca Puckett (Son) Isham Spence married Nancy Redpath (Son) Eli Spence born 1816, married Martha Ellen Jackson (Son) John Carroll Spence born 1852 married Julia Thurman (Son) Columbus Wilkerson Spence born 1878 married Martha Alice Moles (Daughter) Virginia Alice Spence born 1925 married Hubert D. Williams (Daughter) Patricia Ann Williams Willman born 1945 I would like so much to find out more about Nancy, and her family. I noticed that Eli was born when Nancy was 27 years old. Which makes me wonder if she had other children from a previous marriage, perhaps pure Native American. Also, who are her parents. What happened to them? I Don't know where to start. I have checked some of the roles, but no Redpath name. Is there hope to find her parent and sibling information? Sincerely, Pat Willman patwillman@comcast.net

    1. [CHEROKEE-SURNAMES] Looking for Carroll Indian Ancestors
    2. Bobbi LaFevers
    3. Hello and good morning, Have been trying to find Cherokee Indian Ancestors on the Dawes Rolls. May have more than one connection. Have traced back one of the Carroll's to have been married to a Melinda Postell. Most of this information is from the Internet only. William Carroll married to Melinda Postell, Melinda Postell's mother was Margaret Chastain, Margaret's mother was Annie Motes. Annie Motes' father was said to have been full blooded Cherokee Indian. Have not been able to come up with any documented proof concerning this information. Also have Robinson descendants that were suppose to have been from Mississippi who were of Indian decent. They were said to have changed their name from another name (possibly HEAD) to Robinson before moving from Mississippi to Oklahoma. Something was done to make them change their name, maybe a crime or to protect themselves from enemies, not really sure. Have Carroll, Underhill, Cardwell, Postell, Robinson, Bridgman, Pratt, Rose names. Their are mor! e names, but these are the main ones that am researching at this time. This may sound like a bunch of gobbledygook, but if anyone can make sense of the connections, and or have some information pertaining to these families, please drop me a line. If you have any information on possible resources that could be used to find this information, that would be greatly appreciated also. Thank you for taking your time to read this, Bobbi P.S. My maternal grandmother's maiden name was Pearl Snow Robinson and my maternal grandfather's name was Coy Whitfield Carroll. Pearl's mother and father were Nan Bridgman and George Robinson. My grandfather's parents were Charles (Charlie) Edward Carroll and Armanda (Minder) Jane Underhill. Thanks again for taking the time to read this! Bye for now.

    3. Hey everyone! I'm looking for information on the surname LETT As far as I've traced back the Lett's were in Alabama but could have easily came from another state. The farthest date of birth for a Lett in my line in Alabama was 1849 (at least that I'm aware of). This was Mary Matilda Lett (Til-de). Any information about the Cherokee Lett's would be greatly appreciated. Also looking for information on PHILLIPS I do not have any dates for this, just the name Coleman (eugene) Phillips which may have oringally been from around New York but I'm assuming was in Alabama at one point as at least one child of his was born there; Lucy Jane Lett/Phillips And lastly is the surname Dawes also from Alabama area, possibly Moundville (Hale or Perry county). I do know all of these surnames appear on the Dawes Roll, but no found connections to my family yet. Once I hit full blood family members they became hard to trace. Thanks very much for any information about these surnames or the people mentioned above would be appreciated tremendously!
