I'm looking for any information on my g grandmother whose name was Elizabeth Gillum when she married my grandfather James Samuel Knowles in Jasper county Missouri in 1875, but I'm told that her maiden name was Brock and she was born in Arkansas.. She was 1/2 Cherokee. Her mother Brock was 100% Cherokee and was born in 1826 and lived to be 94. They lived in Blue Jacket , Indiain Territory Oklahoma from about 1876 to 1885. Children born in Blue Jacket were William Jackson Knowles and Myrtle Lee Knowles. In 1885 they moved back to Galesburg, Jasper, Missouri and later up to Bates County Missouri. Elizabeth died in 1892. Any information or ideas on where to look would be appreciated. Thank you, Roger E. Hello! I just recently found one of my distant cousins, a granddaughter of my Cherokee grandmother Allie Price. After Allie died in Arkansas, all of her children were "adopted" (more accurately phrased as "taken in") by white people, including some in Evansville. I'll contact my cousin again after the holidays and see if she knows of your grandmother or any of the Canton family, and will let you know. In the meantime, wishing peace and comfort to all who seek, Emily > > [CHEROKEE-SURNAMES] CANTON surname ["Rod or > Leslie" <aeriehollow@ellij] > > > Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2003 13:57:38 -0500 > From: "Rod or Leslie" <aeriehollow@ellijay.com> > To: CHEROKEE-SURNAMES-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [CHEROKEE-SURNAMES] CANTON surname > > Looking for my grandmother's family information > regarding claims of > Cherokee heritage. Looking for my grandmother's family information regarding claims of Cherokee heritage. Grandma was born Helena Florence CANTON May 17, 1885 in Evansville Indiana. She was adopted by William H. and Mary Elizabeth Grismer Sterrett in June of 1893. This couple did not marry until that year as well. Granny told me when I was a small child that she was Cherokee - even though she was short, had auburn hair, and gray eyes. She used to tell me that I looked just like her mother but pictures of her adopted mother were not as I looked. Her adopted mother was short, blonde and blue eyed. Later I learned she was adopted and it all made sense. I am very tall and have brown-black hair and dark brown eyes. All grandma's children were dark haired and dark eyed or hazel eyed. Her husband was blonde and blue eyed so this made no sense to him that his children would be so dark. He divorced my grandmother and I am sure this is the reason. I have spent 30 years trying to trace who Granny was. The Vandenburg County records office doesn't have a birth certificate for her and claims that any records related to her adoption have been misplaced. CANTON is virtually impossible to research by word searching in any search engine since it brings up all the cities and parishes using the word Canton. If anyone knows anything about this name would appreciate the help. Leslie At this special season of the year, when family and friends gather, May the warm winds of Heaven blow softly on your home, And the Great Spirit bless all who enter there. Cherokee Blessing. I'm new to the list. I recently have been told by my aunt that my gr gr gr grandmother was 100% Cherokee. Her name was Susan A. Peterson. (Some records have her as Susannah.) She was born in IL and married a John Minear. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks Linda
My GGGGrandmother was Mary Sally Buffalo m. John Henry Davis. She was born to James Buffalo and Mary Jenks in Wake county, N.C. in1813. I am getting conflicting reports on her Cherokee heritage. Do any of you out there have any information or pictures? Doug Kirk

I just wanted to make myself known to the group. I am researching my greatgrandmother, Mary Ann Scott. Mary Ann was born in 1864 in Arkansas and my grandmother told me she was Cherokee.. Sometime prior to 1870 she was "adopted" by a family named Hayes and she took their last name. By 1870 she was living in Blackfork, Scott County, Arkansas with the John Baxter family. In 1896, she and her first husband James Bud Pearce were living in Bower in Indian Territory, in what is now Pittsburgh County. Mary Ann married my greatgrandfather James Newberry in 1901 following the death of James Pearce. She died in 1905 in Bower of complications from measles. I've never had much luck finding early information on Mary Ann as I dont know what her parents names were or what happened to them. I can find her in the 1870, 1880, and 1900 census records. If I can help anybod with their information, please let me know. Genealogy is my first love and I do research several of my own lines. I have met many cousins this way. Although sometimes it might appear that I'm a "lurker", please understand that I'm always working on some line. Time is short. Billie Millsap

I know little history about how Cherokee Indians ended up in Stokes County, NC and Patrick County, Carroll County Virginia. I really no nothing about the History I am learning but some information is confusing. Also I have been told there is a a Indian only Census, is this true? If so how can I view one. Thanks, Annette
Osiyo For all those who are here searching for the life line. I feel much as you all do. But I say ,look not for your "indianess"in your skin, nor your looks Search not in the past or the future for proof Live not in the need to prove And fuss not for others to accept. Know that in your hearts you need no PROOF Know that in your knowledge of your ancestors ,They see you as you are ! Hunting to show others why you are not "Red; Black haired and in loin cloth" Only shows that your not sure whom you are. Creator made us and so he shall be the one to claim you. Trust in your self to know . As the American race ,we are breed as mutts ,to change whom we are. As Humans we are breed to acknoledge we are HUMAN ! Our ancestors did what each had to do They watch to see what we try to do in their honor Show them now we are SURE of whom we are. And just be sure in your heart ,rather then worry if Other' s accept you, believe you ,because they do not Know you. You can not change the past ,but you can the future Hold high the head, but push not pain For all we really need in this life to gain Is that we know who and what and why we really are. Blessings to all who feel lost For they in their searchings alone Show that they truely have found whom they already were. Children of the Creator, children of the stars. Am seeking information on the Thomas WHITE listed on the Dawes Roll, circa 1890. On his registration card, an Akie or aggie BATTS is listed. Any information would be appreciated
Hello! So happy to find this mailing list! Have enjoyed reading the posts that arrived today, especially the one written by Ramona. Sounds like we are all looking for the people we're connected to long ago. I would like to know more about my father's mother's mother, a Cherokee girl named Allie Price, who was only twelve years old when the white family she was living with gave her in marriage or traded her to a hunter/trapper named Elmer Elijah Tyre (also spelled Tyree) who was above thirty years of age. I just learned of Allie's name a few days ago! So happy to finally find her after hearing about her when I was a little girl. Just that my grandmother's mother was a Cherokee girl, no other information. I know the names of her children and several of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc. But I would like to know more about Allie herself. Where was she born? What happened to her parents? What were their names? Why was Allie living with this white family, and why in the world did they give her or trade her to Elijah? When did Allie die, and why? I'm assuming her death was due to childbirth, as she was so young and had so many children in such a short period of time. Well, there's probably no way to find the answers to these questions, but it would certainly be interesting to know. Looking forward to getting to know all of you here in this mailing list! My g-grandmother was Martha Ann Murphy b. 1853 who married Thomas Henry Loftis in 1870, Rockingham County, North Carolina. She was half or whole Cherokee. Her father was a James or John Murphy (whole Cherokee) who married Elizabeth Chambers. I do not know the names or number of children they had; however, they had another daughter Virginia Caroline b. abt 1856 who married a Thomas Mansfield, and they lived in North Carolina too. James/John Murphy and Elizabeth Chambers Murphy also had an unknown son who lived in NC. He became ill after he had some age and family who had previously moved to Oklahoma came back to get him and take him west to live. Family legend is that my g-gm's family all went west to live except for the three mentioned here. Family legend says that James/John Murphy may have been a slave trader, that he was erroneously accused of shooting a man, that he was sued and lost everything. He had owned lots of land and apparently had accumulated some wealth. After losing everything, he became an alcoholic and was not well thought of after that. Some even called him "Devil Murphy." As with all legends, some of this may be fact and some not after 4-5 generations. If any of this rings a familiar bell, or if names are recognizable, or if you have any suggestions, I would love to know more about this line in my genealogy. The descendants that I have known have all been very special, caring people. Thank you. Ramona Smith Supenky
