While I was growing up, my parents told me that my dad's grandmother Cherokee and that my mom's grandmother was Cherokee. Except for family information and the fact that my grandpa on the one side and my grandma on the other side looked native American Indian. I have not been able to find any documentation on that information. I figured this would be a good list to start with. Here is what I have on them my great-grandmothers. Cora Bell Dix, born October 14, 1875 in Shelburn, Indiana, died September 22, 1930 in Blackwell, Kay Co., Oklahoma, buried at Braman Cemetery, Braman, Kay Co., Oklahoma. She married Pleasant Moore in Indiana. Her parents are David F. Dix and Jamima E. Ogle, both also of Indiana. Mable I. Tiepner, born 1887 in Wisconsin. Married, Thomas (Roy) Goodell. My husband recalls stories when he was growing up that he was descended from Native American ancestors, but no one ever told him who these ancestors were. I have been working on his family tree for a year or so, and have been able to trace most of his lines back to English colonial settlers. However, I have not been able to trace his grandmother's FRENCH line beyond North Carolina in the late 1700s. Can anyone advise me as to whether "FRENCH" might have been a Cherokee surname? His family moved from North Carolina to South Carolina to Georgia and finally to southern Alabama by the mid-1800s. Thanks for any help anyone can give me! Best regards, Janet Zengel Messer Micanopy, Florida
Does anyone have information that a Lidia Watson born Ohio circa 1801, or a Nancy Thomas born 1840 Deerfield Ohio may be of Cherokee descent or their husbands who were Nathanial Brewster and Almon Brewster respectively. Do these first names have any significance with a Cherokee background: Zerember, Orlando, and Almon? Thank you Fern Stewart
Hello, I am looking for more information on my ancestor Elizabeth Lowery who I think was the daughter of George Lowery and his Cherokee wife (Nannie) or Ooloosta. Elizabeth Lowery married Joseph Sevier, son of Gov. John Sevier. Does anyone know who the father was of Nannie Ooloosta (Cherokee woman)? Many thanks. Doris

I can't remember who was asking about this so I will post it to the list in hopes of connecting to the people/person who asked. Hiram Brady Thomas b. 5/28/1836, son of Charley and Sarah Brady Thomas, in Cherokee County Georgia which then was still Georgia Indian territory... Cherokee county was divided up and this particular section became Gilmer County. Hiram married Minerva Tucker the daughter of John Tucker I who was Conseenee in the Cherokee language. John was married to Ruby Holloway the daughter of Rueben and Nancy Holloway, pioneers to Gilmer. Rueben was the son of Rueben and Pinniah Holloway. Both Ruebens were born in Virginia. Hiram and Minerva later went to Indian Territory Oklahoma after years of farming here in Georgia. Minerva is recorded on the Dawes as being 1/4 Cherokee #2035 and Hiram who was a white man is also on the roll #226600 - perhaps as an adopted member. This information is from the Gilmer Heritage Book. Children of Conseenee (John I) and Ruby Tucker: Minerva Lewallen Nancy Rebecca Anna John II Sutiza Lucretia According to the researcher of this information John I Tucker known as Conseenee, was the son of John Conseenee Tucker and has often been stated as being an only child... however the researcher (Arsie Bigby an Oklahoma descendant) states that there were other siblings of John I; Jim Bud Bessimer Were supposedly raised by others after the death of John I's mother. Apparently John I's father remarried into the Walkingstick family and also has some half siblings. Hiram and Minerva Thomas' children: Nancy m. Wilson Walkingstick Martha m. Greenberry Calihan Caldonia m. Howard Tweedle John Animal Will Faubion James m. Allie Bryson Tina m. a Matthews Lucius Frank m Florence Arnold and Bessie Moreland Vandora m Jim Green and Howard Etter George m. Malinda Mathews and Susan Brewer The Thomas side of the family ties into our THOMAS lines... which is why I copied the information. You might check the Indian Territory 1900 Census. Also the Pottawatamie County, Oklahoma after 1900 or the 1909 Oklahoma Census will have their Indian name. There are Watkins in that area. The 1900 Census will have their Indian name if

Dear Brenda, My Watkins (Wadkins) family is said to have come from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia. They were supposedly mixed blood Cherokees but I only have oral support for that claim right now. One of my gggrandmothers, who married into the Watkins family, was named POTTS and it is said that she came from Pott's Mountain, Georgia. In the 1860s they lived near Nashville, TN and then moved to Northwestern AL/Northeastern MS where they ran a sawmill on the Tennessee River near present day Iuka, MS/Cherokee, AL. Some of the names I remember off the top of my head are George Henry WAD(T)KINS, Lena POTTS WAD(T)KINS, Henry Putnam WAD(T)KINS, Dock WAD(T)KINS, William WAD(T)KINS, Ella ADKINSON WAD(T)KINS. If any of this sounds familiar to you or anyone. Please email me. I have been diligently searching for my ancestors for some years now and would love some more info on them.
