    3. Aside from looking for you Cherokee ancestry, be sure to search the surname resources online that may help you find your connection. There is a free space at the Genforum.com for looking for surnames. Inside the surname site you can do a search for your first names, spousal surname or location - using one word for the search. An example for Linda searching for Jacob Cox in Georgia would be using the name Delilah or as was more common for them to use their middle name - I went to the COX Genforum at http://genforum.genealogy.com/cox/ and used Adaline and came up with someone researching Jacob and Adaline Cox in Gordon County, Georgia. You can reply to the message and with a little luck perhaps find your elusive information. Using other knowns may help as well, such as Kentucky, or Cherokee, or her surname if you know it. Posting sometimes brings help as well. using subject lines to attract attention example: Jacob Cox b. 1818 in Kentucky, or Jacob & Delilah Adaline Cox in Georgia about 1838. More often then not when doing the Cherokee heritage research you will get better results if you try to find all you can about the collateral line or the spousal line or the children. It was through the children's extended lines of our family that we found the Guion Miller Application information. For whatever men say in their blindness, And in spite of the fancies of youth, There's nothing so kingly as kindness And nothing so royal as truth. Alice Cary (1820-1871)

    2. All, I have a question regarding Cherokees born in KY. Were-and are-there Cherokee settlements/communities in KY? My GGGGrandfather, Joseph Allen, was supposed to have been born there. His wife was Ann LNU, born in VA, one son, also Joseph, and a daughter, Genevieve, who married Charles Lynch in San Antonio, TX. Family lore has them all being Cherokees, and I do have one picture of Genevieve, who looks like a full-blood. I cannot find them on any census records, except for Genevieve Allen Lynch, when she was 78 years old in San Antonio, TX. Michelle Adams

    1. Captain John SMITH(Storie(y),Reynolds, Dukes)
    2. Kaeli
    3. Osiyo, The following is the info that I have on John SMITH, Cherokee Indian, father of Phoeba SMITH. I am trying to find someone who matches this description. I have included some info that lists John SMITH, Cherokee, in about the right time period. He would have been born between 1750-1770? Probably in NC because that is where his daughter Drucilla (b. ca 1788) was born. Questions: 1) How old was the John SMITH who was dangerously wounded at Horseshoe Bend and was the title of Captain given to him by Andrew Jackson? 2) Did he go West before the majority of the tribe between 1814-1829 (he isn't listed on the Emigration rolls but the roll keeping by the US govt. was sporadic during that time). 3) Is the "Captain John Smith" the same John SMITH who signed a welcome declaration on behalf of the Western Cherokees just after the Treaty of New Echota? I have hit a brick wall. If anyone has any info on this (these) John SMITHs please contact me. Any help would be appreciated. Wado, Kaeli My notes on John SMITH: Marshall County, AL Genweb has "Capt. John SMITH" married to Phoeba UNKNOWN. He was supposedly the father of Drucilla (b. ca 1788), Larkin, and John SMITH. Drucilla married Robert STORY(IE) (b. ca 1788). Drucilla & Robert are listed as parents of Elizabeth G. STORY(IE). Elizabeth G. STORY(IE) married James REYNOLDS who was the son of John REYNOLDS (John Reynolds was the older brother of Henry REYNOLDS-our line). {Henry REYNOLDS (ca1800->1870) was married to Mary BROWN (ca1810-1844) & they were the parents of John Ross "J.R." REYNOLDS (b. ca 1830, Bedford Co., TN). John Ross "J.R."REYNOLDS married Pheba Catherine STORY(IE) (b. 7 Mar 1830, TN) on 2 Dec 1849, Marshall Co., AL. Their daughter Lucinda Jane Reynolds DUKES submitted Guion-Miller Application #38653 (rejected) in 1907. Lucinda is the older sister to Greenberry REYNOLDS (our line).} According to Lucinda's affidavit, Phoeba SMITH was the DAUGHTER of John SMITH instead of the WIFE. Maybe there is a missing generation or John SMITH had both a wife and a daughter named Phoeba (Pheba). John Smith was a Full blood Cherokee Indian as per Lucinda J. Three escaped and watched from hiding as their less fortunate comrades were killed and scalped, then their bodies lashed to poles as the Tawakonis celebrated with a scalp dance. The Texas Cherokee were greatly offended and wrote to the Arkansas Cherokee concerning the matter. In July 1829 a war dance and council were held at Bayou Menard, east of Fort Gibson. A half-blood Cherokee war captain named John Smith urged the assembled Cherokee and Creek warriors to join him in an expedition to assist their Texas brethren. Smith led several braves to Dutch's village south of the Red River and then on to the settlements of Big Mush. Dutch led the Cherokee war party, numbering sixty-three after being reinforced by Cherokees from other villages, against the Tawakoni on the Brazos River near the present city of Waco. A gruesome massacre followed with the Cherokees taking fifty-five to sixty Tawakoni scalps before leaving for home. Hello, I am interested in tracing my Cherokee heritage. I am close, but I am not sure how to complete the last step. I have my grandfather's name and birthplace, and his father's name but only general information on his birth. My mother said my grandfather was 100% cherokee and my grandmother had a small amount, but I never verified it, and most of my family died in the last few years so almost all links have been lost. This is what I know: 1 - E. Janet Plato (that's me) born 7/3/1966 Houston, TX 2 - Lawrence Allen Plato (this is my dad) 3 - Patricia Jean Collins (this is my mom's maiden name) born Harris County, TX 12/12/1941 I gleaned the birth information from an online source, so I do not have a birth certificate. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/harris/harristoc.htm Collins, Patrica Jean 12-12-1941 F Alberta Mae Lewellyn Eugene Collins So according to rootsweb, and my mother, my maternal grandfather was Eugene Byron Collins. My father thought he was born around 1912, possibly in Dec. Which agrees with his age and address in the 1930 census. My father traced him down in the 1930 census. I am pretty sure the child listed in the 1930 census is my maternal grandfather. The name and address agree with where he grew up, the age is about right and the father's name agrees with what my father thought it should be. 4 - Eugene Byron Collins born ~1912 (Possibly Dec per dad) as of 1930 living in Waco, TX (McLennan County) http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/mclennan/mclenntoc.htm This is my grandfather, I do not have his actual birth certificate, but I have located him and his parents via the 1930 census records. This makes his father Thomas Collins. Given his age in the census, he was like born in 1869, which means he might be on the Dawson Rolls. 5 - Thomas Collins (born in Texas), He was 61 in 1930 on the census, and was listed as head of household (So he was likely born ~1869). The 1930 census give him the following family: Kate ?? (wife), 42 Eugene 17 <--- my grandfather Naoma, 12 Hazel 12 Thomas 10 Lucille 9 Lois 6 Flora 2 Address: 1326 Dutton St, Waco, TX Thomas Collins born in TX and parents both born in Alabama (again, per 1930 census). So this puts Thomas, my great frandfather, as being born around 1869 and having parents from Alabama. Alabama was not Indian territory, so I doubt he's on the dawson rolls, but you never know. The Dawson Rolls are a list of those living in Oklahoma between 1898 and 1914. This is about the right time period for my great grandfather since he was likely born in 1869. He would be between 29 and 47 depending on if and when he was indexed. There are several T Collins on Census cards 10803, 10804, D1064 and D1065 but I cannot find the raw data, just a comment that the search application spits out to try and convince me to join. The other big list is the Guion-Miller Roll for Eastern Cherokee living in any state in 1909. Page 61 of the GM lists Thomas Collins #33412 from Indian Territory and #33189 from Oklahoma. These are the right places, but I cannot link the person they list with grandfather... and that's my real question, how do I make the connection? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, E. Those of you who are using Spam Cop, or any program of this type will be unsubed. I just don't have the time and am not willing to respond to these messages. You can set your filter to remove mailing lists from this process. I am list mom for around 40 mailing lists, and I receive 2-3 of these kinds of messages a day. The people who have auto reply will also be removed also, I don't care when you are out of the office. I am sorry if you think I am sounding mean, but joining a mailing list is your responsibility, it is up to you to subscribe, unsubscribe, and remove filters that stop the list mail from getting through to you. 2. Iam looking for information on my ggg-grandfather Simon BUTLER. I have been told that HE was a full blooded Cherokee. Simon was born in 1776 in Indian Territory. He married Mary "Polly" Frazier. They had a daughter by the name of Sarah Elizabeth"Sally" Butler. I have found Simon and Mary in the 1840 census in Wayne County Ky. I have also found Mary and Simon in 1860 in Whitley County, Ky. And most recently found a Simon Butler in Stewart County, Tennessee in the 1820's and 1830's. I was told that Simon came from the Paint Clan, and he went by the name of Running Bear or Running From Bear. Simon died in 1869 or 1870 in Pulaski County, Ky if anyone has any information.
