    3. My husbands family has Wilson's from TN-some of them spelled it with two L's. My husbands great grandfather was William Riley Willson married to Susan Rebecca Taylor ( of Alabama then Arkansas). William is suppose to be of Cherokee descent. Have never found anything on him. Some of his children were Lark Anderson, Silas William, Calvin Thomas, Alfred Lee. Do not know William's parents or siblings, only know that he was born in Sept 1839 either in MO or TN. Any of these names in your Wilson family? 3. Diane, mtDNA is short for mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down through the females, and so would not tell you anything about your male ancestors. I believe you are thinking of the Y-chromosome check that men can have done to trace the male line. For further information on mitochondrial DNA, here are some sites: http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/mtDNA.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondrial_DNA http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=8923 Rhonda Graves Fort Worth, TX Drhea11@cs.com wrote: Sherry, I think the mtdna results can be false. If you checked through yourself, as a female. I doesn't work that way. It shows up in the male lines. Even though it is passed down from the maternal side. I'm not positive about all of this, but don't be discouraged. If you really believe you are of Native American descent, keep on looking. I had mine done and it came back that same way, so I researched many sites and by what I found this was not the right test for a female. I have no dought that my family is of Native American descent, but there has to be a more reliable way to prove it. Stick with the Cherokee by blood and follow the lines closely. I have been researching for years and found that by going over my oldest research(when I didn't have a clue!) Now am able to follow leads better. Keep on researching! 2. Diane, The Grand Aunt I was speaking of was Martha Jane Robins...she was born in Al. in Winston Co. abt. 1879...She married Martin A. Painter...b. abt. 178...He is listing his birth place and his parents birthplace as Alabama. I have yet to find any info. on his parents. Quite possible the families migrated together from N. J. ( as my original Robins lines were listed as from N.J.) and the Carolina's into Tn. and then to Al. There are alot of Painters listed in Al. records. My Painter eventually migrated to Tishomingo. Miss. Someone once told me the name Painter was also a variation of the names Panter/Panther. What do you think? Di

    2. I got my MTdna at www.gentree.com, but I wouldn't recommend them. Go to a more reliable source. Some of the forums at www.genforum.com are doing specific surnames. Lots of research already in the works. Ancestry.com does them also. Once you find your ancestry, you have to show sources and direct ancestry to someone on the rolls. If you can do this, then go to the library at Cherokee, N.C., they will help if you have enough evidence. Cherokee is a very close knit community and they let very few new members in. If any! The Cherokee's in Oklahoma are also a place to go. They will both send you an application, but it is still hard. If you truly are of Cherokee descent, it will eventually be found. LOL! Maybe! I am from Tennessee and My Wilson's are 2 seperate families: (1) Issac Wilson b. Mar. 18, 1786 d. June 17, 1874 s/o Augustus Wilson /Ann Rice m. Mary Snodderly b. 1786 d. 1843 child: Mary Wilson b. 1820 m. Vincent Packett (my gggrandparents) Knoxville and Union Co. Tn. (2) Jesse Wilson b. Oct. 30, 1802 d. Oct. 18, 1904 + Matlida Ailor b. May 3, 1814 Jesse Wilson was the s/o Nancy Wilson Their daughter, Elizabeth Wilson b. Jan. 1846 + Jasper Albright b. 1837 Union Co. & Knoxville, Tn. Some of the Wilson family ended up in Oklahoma. Matilda Ailor Wilson was a descendant of Samuel Humber(Humbard) My Painter family: Samuel Humber s/o John b. May 6, 1730 Va. d. July 11, 1805 Greenville, Tn. married Sarah (Sally) Painter b.1735 Va. d/o Jonathon Painter and Hannah Braddock. Hope this helps, Diane

    3. I have listed my recent ethnic origins below so that I can explain some things to the best of my knowledge. I could give a theory that I have for Russia and all of the countries next to Russia but I will not because it is just a theory and may not have any scientific basis at all. As for haplogroups…T1 is European. I think that there are five Native American haplogroups which consist of A, B, C, D, and X. I did have a genetic match to 59 individuals who also had a DNA test of some sort. Including one listed as Inidan Territory Oklahoma, Tribal Fox, and New Mexico as well as Arizona…does this tell me anything ? No it does not. Surnames I connected to were Green, Williams, Turner, Turner-Thomas, Sherman, Larson, and a whole slew of others, some seemingly Jewish. I guess what I am trying to say is that this test will help connect me to my biological mothers lines at some point. When I had the test I did not know that “matches” could be thousands of years ago. Belarus Czechoslovakia England France France Germany Ireland Lithuania Moldovia Netherlands Norway Poland Romania Russia Scotland Switzerland Ukraine United Kingdom United States Unknown Origin Wales Poland, Ukraine, Czechoslovakia, and France are all listed as Ashkenazi which if I am not mistaken is Jewish. I have a recent ethnic origin of the United States. Again, if I am not mistaken…you do not get an ethnic origin for the United States unless it is Native American. If anyone knows any different please feel free to interject at any time. I think that it is important to remember that this is only my mtdna or my mother, my mothers mother, my mothers mothers mother. Does it show that I do not have Native American DNA…no it does not. In fact, it would show the opposite since ethnic origins are from the United States. Does it tell me how much NA DNA I have…NO. It also does not tell me how “much” DNA I have from any ethnic origin. Does it help me easily find NA ancestors…NO. It does tell me that I have Native American ancestors on my mothers side…somewhere. It would seem that it also tells me that I have Jewish ancestors…somewhere. I think both groups were discriminated against in American throughout history to some degree, Native American more than Jewish. Yes, America was no “safe haven” for the Jewish. Well, I have said enough

    3. My mtdna test results came back today and my haplogroup was T1. I am sorry to have wasted you time on these boards. Ironically, I have 32 matches for an unknown origin....&*^%&^%$&^&(%% and 1 for the United States, France, Lithuania, and of course Moldovia? and England. I am fairly diappointed that it couldn't narrow things down a little more. At any rate it did tell me I need to look places other than here. Sincerely, Happy hunting! Sherry

    2. Hi Sherry Huff and Cherokee Surnames list, Sherry, thank you for responding to the list and letting us know. The name Green has a long history in the Cherokee tribe, I have been told. My brother and I are working on our Kinney DNA now. As soon as I get the information on that I intend to do the Native American DNA test. I have a kit already. Please, keep in touch with the Cherokee Surname list. The group is so good to share. Do you have Missouri connections? I do and have about decided that my family of Kinney, Black and Conway were probably among the Old Settlers who came to MO before the Trail of Tears. I look forward to hearing from you again. I will send you and the list what I get too.

    1. Sandlin Surname
    2. Sherry Huff
    3. Hello everyone, I was surprised to receive so many emails from individuals on the Sandlin surname on this list. I posted that because I was always told that my Shelton line was Native American as well as my Williams line. Are the Sheltons and the Williams in my family any part Native American? I don't know for sure and can't tell you. It would be great if I could answer that question. I like you may never know the answer to that for sure. I had a DNA test done and expect the results back in a couple of weeks. I would suggest that anyone searching their ethnic origins do the same thing. I am sorry that so many individuals thought that because I posted that information that I could connect them to a native american line. However, if you would like information on the Sandlins I will post to this list what I have. I recieved a lot more from a couisin shortly after posting to another list. The Sandland/Sandlin surname goes back to Ireland from what I received and to the best of my memory another "Green" or two married into this family for those interested in information on the greens. Happy hunting. Sincerely, Sherry

    1. Prince and Susan Jackson
    2. Does anyone know where I can find informationabout my ancestors Prince and Susan Jackson? Susan, my family believes, was or was the descendent of an emancipated slave and a member of the Cherokee tribe. We do not know much else, except that Susan married Prince Jackson, who died in Virginia. We think she was born sometime in the 1880s, but this is a rough estimate. I have no idea where to begin, and all I have to go on is the name and a photograph of Susan standing alone in a field. Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you very much, SRM
