I wanted to add Mary SHINE -Westbrooks father MAY have also been YONG/YONG. (Many of my lines descending from the WESTBROOKs carries the 1st or 2cd name YONG/YUNG/YOUNG, from unknown origen). The previously posted name(s) YON/YUN comes from another descendant branch of this SHINE-WESTBROOK line. So they all may also be possibilities... Hello, I know there is Cherokee in my ancestry, and I'd love to know where in my line it came from, or at least get some confirmation of it for myself. I do know that my line goes up to Archibald Redmond McMahan, who came from Ireland and settled in Sevier County, Tennessee. A few generations below, there are several wives of his son and grandson who I'm trying to find out about. For example, one of his sons married Elizabeth Byrd, who I've researched and can only find out that she was from either North Carolina or Virginia and was born in 1777. Does anyone know about the Byrds in that area around the late 1700s? Was this a Cherokee name? Thanks! Laura
I need a bulldozer to knock down this brick wall! First, I only have one day of research under my belt regarding native american research, but I thought I'd solicit the lists since I've received lots of help from Al Simmons and other kind friends on the Bedford County list. My great grandmother was supposedly born in Murfreesboro, Rutherford, TN in early 1878 and adopted by a Johnson family. Her name was Cleo Johnson. She later married A. H. Russ from Shelbyville in 1896 in Lewisburg, Marshall, TN (I have the record). I believe they lived in Shelbyville for a few years before migrating to Paintrock in northern Alabama, ultimately residing in Mobile where she died in 1943. She taught/played music but I don't know if this was in school or in church. Looking for information available at the time for fostering or adopting children, especially native american adoptions during those times in order to identify her adoptive and/or biological parents and keep the quest alive. Any thoughts or suggestions? Mike Kendall San Diego, CA
I can appreciate how frustrated you feel. Most of us trying to trace our native heritage come upon the same problems you are dealing with. I don't know how far you are in your research, but have you contacted the Eastern Band on the Qualla Reservation in Cherokee North Carolina? Their site explains the records that were kept and where to find them. And I think they have a person there who can help you with your research. I hope this helps. Pam
I am looking for information on the following individuals: Mourning Napier/Ledford b. Dec 1877 Edmund" Babe" Day b. 29 march 1871 KY Facts: 1) Edmund Day was the son of Beatty Day and Louisa Howard. 2) Beatty Day married Louisa Howard under the name Beatty Ledford 3) Beatty Day was the son of Nancy Day (not proven: father was Aley Ledford) 4) Beatty Ledford/Day m. Louisa Howard 1 Jan 1859 Harlan County, KY 5) Beatty Day uses the surname Day from the time of his marriage til the time of his death 6) Mourning Napier/Ledford married Edmund Day 7) Mourning was supposedly Indian (probably not) 8) Mourning had two names: Mona and Mourning (fact) 9) Mournings name was supposedly Mourning Star (her name was Mourning but no star) 10) Family cemetery is White Star (coincidence.probably) 11) She was a twin (probably not. Two Mournings were born to siblings within a year of one another (first cousins probably accounts for the twin theory) 12) Mourning was born on a reservation (probably not but.) in North or South Carolina (Cherokee nation has never been a "reservation") 13) Mourning and Edmund were married on a reservation (who knows please prove me wrong can't find a marriage record) 14) Mourning was a Ledford (probably not if any chance exists that Edmunds father was) 15) I'm fed up (you better believe it) I know those of you looking at the postings on this list are fed up as well. I was adopted out of this family and until I find something to substantiate my theories or their stories I have to keep looking. This will be my last post so please do not send any disrespectful or just down right rude messages to me. If anyone can tell me if marriage records were kept by the Cherokee, Eastern Band or otherwise I would appreciate that. I would also appreciate knowing where I might find those records if they do exist. Sincerely,
jana, you are the queen!!!! i cheated and bought a program that i lost in the great crash several months ago (but they are supposed to be replacing it next week) called copernic, and i use that like crazy. my boss once told me (after my coronation as queen, ha ha) NEVER to look him up on the internet, he was afraid of what i might find.. actually, i did look him up and all he had were scientific journals (he was scientist and i did a lot of scientific research for him and others at my job, so this genealogy thing is new to me.. my mother handed me all her pedigree (PAF5 thingy) and said "have at it", "its your turn to torture yourself over this".. .actually, she spent twenty some odd years loving every minute of the genealogy thing (now if i could just keep remembering how to spell genealogy, i will be ok.. thanks for the info and hints, co-queen!!!! linda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jana Jordan Shaw" <jordan78@sbcglobal.net> To: <CHEROKEE-SURNAMES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 09, 2005 9:51 PM Subject: Re: [CHEROKEE-SURNAMES] > Hey, girl, we can sure share that crown! ;o) I spent $40 to learn all this > that was free online, so what kinda queen is that! Hey, girl, we can sure share that crown! ;o) I spent $40 to learn all this that was free online, so what kinda queen is that! But, it sure helped in my research! I hope you don't mind my putting this back on the group as it may help others too. Try these: For instance using Jana Jordan Shaw "jana shaw" + texas "j shaw" + texas "j jordan s" + texas Be creative and try EVERY possibility you can think of: "j shaw" + genealogy "j shaw" + choctaw "j shaw" + sequoyah "j shaw" + sequoyah county "j shaw" + "sallisaw, oklahoma" "j shaw" + "indian territory" The possibilities are, of course, different in your cases, but these will give you some ideas. I knew my grandfather died in Arlington, Texas after some 30 years marriage to my grandmother, as Jess Willard Jordan. But, in looking on the ssi, I couldn't find him under Jess Willard, JW (which he often used also) or Jess. I finally had to wade through the 200 something J. Jordans and found him listed as unmarried J. Jordan! Now, if I can just get the $29 together to get that ssi app! I usually start with the most specific and work my way down to where I find the "right" amount of hits I want. And, using different search engines sometimes makes a difference. Overall, I like www.google.com best. But, it sure can't hurt to run it on any search engine you like, but I'd try google if you haven't already. And, try the different areas they have too. Now, I always have to play with this one to see which way is right, and it's different on different search engines, but you can also tell the engine to ignore certain words, like "j shaw" + genealogy -episcopal that might narrow your hits a little too. On ebay, I have to use -michael (I don't have any kin I know of named michael, but with michael Jordan there's thousands it saves me from having to wade through). "j shaw" + cherokee -religious You'll begin to see things you can "ignore" as you get hits. I just went to www.google.com and put in boolean and got a lot of hits with directions for these type of searches. Good searching! Linda, Are you doing "boolean" searches? Like putting in "Linda Priest" would get better results than just Linda Priest without the quotes. Or "Linda Priest" + genealogy would be good to use - just using your name as an example. You might look up "boolean" on a search engine and get more ways to use it. It's usually the "advanced" search. It's one of the first things I teach in my genealogy classes. I don't think this lady was Indian but the person who I had the mtdna match with says his mother has documentation. Don't know. Here is some information on Rosetta and her husband James Townsel. Rosetta Townsel was a SPENCE (Spencer?), b. Missouri - m'd 1879 Logan Co., Ark., and was James Townsel's 2nd wife - 1st wife Margaret Westmoreland, m'd 1868 Yell Co., Ark - James already had 4 children when he married Rosetta. James was born in Ky and I suspect he is the James, b. Pulaski Co., Ky. This James's parent were Isaac Henderson Townsel and Mary "Polly" TURNER. James Townsel's parents are listed as both born in Virginia and he served as a Private in the 5th W.Va Infantry and later in the 1st W.Va Veterans Infantry during the Civil War (WVa was Va until 1863) and Rosetta Townsel applied for his pension in 1911 Johnson Co., Ark, where their son James Harrison Townsel's 1917 WWI draft registration card is registered and where Rosetta probably died James Townsel's parents' lines lead back to a double TURNER (his mother and father were 1st cousins thru the TURNERs) link in S.E. Ky and leads further back to the Lea/Lee, Suddarth/Suddeth, Green, Penn/Pinn, Fleming, Berkeley, Randolph, Bolling, Isham, Kennon peope of Amherst, Nelson, Buckingham Co.'s Va and earlier Amherst & New Kent Co's of the 1600's,
Evidently all males have the same mutations thus the ability to be traced back to scientific "adam" . Obviously showing where they are thought to have originated and then where they ended up and how their DNA changed over time to what it is today. This is the way I see it since several other men that tested came back with the exact same mutations.
Ha ha aha Okay, My fathers DNA test came back. We may not be Cherokee but the connection to some Native group is undeniable. Ex. Native Siberia, Polynesia, Greenland-Inuit (Eskimo) and many many more. My question is this: How does a Polynesian, Micronesian, Eskimo or tribe from Canada end up in KY? Oh one more thing, My mothers DNA showed a match to a fellow whose ancestor was a Rosetta Spence (supposedly Cherokee Indian) lived in Arkansas. Hugs, Sherry
Hi Sue Bauer, Is Bauer you maiden name? Where does the Green fit in? How far back have you gone on the US census? What states were your family in on the census that you searched? I look forward to hearing form you. Ruth in Oklahoma
O si yo all... I am researching my family. I was told that I was Cherokee and Northern Cheyenne, but having been raised outside of the family (I was adopted in 1949, born in 1946), it has been difficult to put the pieces together. For instance, I was told that my adoptive mother was my 'birth mother', and I know that her family were known as being 'Black Dutch' and 'Black Irish'. I recently found out that my GGrandfather (Fallin) was a slave in Virginia. My Grandfather Thomas Henry Follin (Fallin) was born 1878 [in Virginia] and d. 1964 [in Maryland]. He was married to my Grandmother, Bessie Ann [Auterback] Follin, b. 1888 and d. 1971. Her parents were Ferdinand Auterback and Susan Boltin. I believe my mother's family are Cherokee (it was better to be 'Black Irish' than Indian...my Aunt related a story about when she lived in NC and that they had to get off the sidewalks when 'the white people were walking by'. My father [who I was told was my 'uncle'] was Charles Spang [this is where the Northern Cheyenne comes in] His parents were Charles Spong (Spang the name was changed to Spong...maybe because Spong is the 'white' side. My Grandmother was Emma Mae Keller and her parents were Franklin Keller and Alice Virginia Jones. As far as I can tell, they were from Shepherdstown, WV/Maryland area. I recently found out that the Spangs are the largest family of the Northern Cheyenne. I contacted someone there and told her my story and she asked me to send her photos of myself. I did and she said she passed my photos to the Elders and they said I definately looked like family and she would try to find out what she could but nothing has come of it and maybe they don't want to look that hard. Hope someone can help me out here... Carol Jean
Hi. I have been researching the Cherokee connection to my family for several years. Right now I am at a dead end and have been taking time off. The Cherokee ancestor's maiden name was Adaliede Green. I was told that she married twice. Her first husband was a Walters but don't know his first name. I have contacted one of his descendants but se hasn't been very cooperative. Adaliede remarried and her husband's name(my gggrandfather) was William Wright. From what I found so far, they married on 18th of Jan, 1870. It is also possible that they could have married in 1877-1891. Those are the dates I have so far. She had a son named Thomas at the time of marriage. He was around 3 yrs old. Adaliede was born in Green Co. GA. Not sure exactly if it is located in the northern part. One of her sons(my ggrandfather) was names Dili Wright. I found out that his name is Tsalagi. That is the only connection I have to the Cherokees. He was a medicine man or herbalist. He was born in Oconee. On the death certificate, it read Oconoca but I have never heard of it. I have seen some names on the Guion Miller roll that match but I'm not sure if it is them. Adaliede also married into a black family if this makes a difference. If this sounds familiar ro anyone, please email me. Wado Tonya
Hello All....I am stuck and have been for a long while and was wondering if someone well versed in the Cherokee language could help me out.....I have been told my gr gr grandfather S.H Wolf's name was Simeon Henry....but there seems to be no record (so far ) found on him prior to the 1880 fed census....I have found out Simeon is a biblical name like Jacob and even used quit a bit in the Hebrew language ...and possibly give by a missionary or someone else to Native children that they could not pronounce or wanted to change their actual name...or just to eliminate the Native name period....is there some type of translation of Simeon or maybe it was pronounced differently? thanks Todd
