    3. This remarkable document was created by the United States Department of the Interior between July of 1914 and January of 1915 in response to the United States Senate's inquiry into the status of a Native American people that now call themselves the Lumbees. It is much, much more than a study of the Lumbee's. It is essentially an encyclopedia of what scholars thought the histories of North Carolina and the Southern Highlands were in 1914. The book comprehensively discusses all colonial archives known at that time, plus goes into detail about the experiences of Native American peoples in North Carolina from the end of the American Revolution to 1914. In includes chapters that address the Lumbees, Cherokees, Cheraws, Tuscaroras, Catawba, Saponi, Hattaras, Shawan (Shawnee) and Norakoke Indians. At the time this book was written, there had been virtually no professional archaeological excavations in the Piedmont and Appalachian regions of the Southeast. The archaeological profession elsewhere was in its infancy. Often self-identified archaeologists were little more than collectors of Native American art and artifacts. Thus, even though the articles about the early years of North Carolina are presented as facts, they primarily rely on the folklore of early European settlers. For example, the book states that the Cherokees have always occupied the mountainous region between northern Georgia and western Virginia, but presents several colonial era maps that show other tribes living in that region instead of the Cherokees. *The Condition and Tribal Rights of the Indians of Robeson and Adjoining Counties of North Carolina* is a treasure trove from the past. It will be useful and interesting to any person interested in the Native American history of the Southeast. http://www.peopleofonefire.com/ We also added this week: *Hidden World Comes to the Light*<http://www.peopleofonefire.com/hidden_world_comes_to_the_light.html>, Arawak, Tupi-Guarani and Quechua populations in the Southeast *How Ethowah, North Carolina Got its Name*<http://www.peopleofonefire.com/how_etowah_nc_got_its_name.html> *A World Gone with the Wind*<http://www.peopleofonefire.com/a_world_gone_with_the_wind.html> *French Description of Track Rock Georgia*<http://www.peopleofonefire.com/french_description_of_track_rock_georgia.html> Thanks Judy -- Native American Genealogy http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/ People of One Fire http://www.peopleofonefire.com

    3. Barb, You have some of the names from my family tree. Agnes "Aggie" Cornett Shepherd Sizemore looks Native American. She has the high cheekbones and broad nose. Can't tell how dark her hair is. On Mon, Apr 8, 2013 at 4:33 PM, BARBARA GORDON-LANTTO <barbgolant@msn.com>wrote: > Thank you. 2. You may want to try this link. It is by a woman who outlines some possible physical and medical characteristics that seem to present themselves in Native American descendants. You might want to check to see if any of these show up in your family. She also mentions other resources, websites that may interest/help you in your search. Also, try the Dawes Rolls - since you have relatives from Tennesse and North Carolina (Cherokee territory) - Many were removed to Oklahoma, but many remain. Names are on these rolls. I have found numerous with my maternal grandmother's maiden sirname.
