Hello Cherokee-L folks, My foster great grandfather was 1/2 Cherokee indian I was told (and perhaps part Choctaw as well). Before his granddaughter passed away, she told me that he had changed his surname to TRUE which was a name that sounded like the his real Cherokee surname. Does anyone on this list happen to know of a Cherokee surname that might sound like the word "True"? What would be the Cherokee word for "true"? I found Charles True finally in the 1900 census in Tennessee. It states that his father was born in Ireland; mother born in "Indian territory". Charles True was 29 years old and was married to Sarah J. True of Missouri who was 26 years old in 1900. They had 4 children between them named, Emerson True, Myrte Dialphia (my foster grandmother) True, Rutilla True and also a Lovie (sp?) True. These are all very odd first names (except for Emerson). Any clues? I've been trying to find him after the 1900 census with no luck. Would Indian territory have in Tennessee c. 1900 have been Cherokee country? From what I have been told they were Cherokee/Choctaw and they do not appear on any records but this solitary one that I found. If anyone can help, please let me know. Thanks! Sue
