Four of us traveled to South Dakota to see her off last weekend and were welcomed as family by her family, friends, community, and tiospaye. We walked the beautiful prairies where she lived as a little girl, heard stories, learned about her activism and dedication to causes beyond the buffalo, and felt the power of her love in everyone present. While the path ahead will be difficult without her, we were heartened and inspired by the passion and commitment of those closest to her to pick up where she left off and lend their voices, prayers, energy, and lives to the fulfillment of her life's work: stopping the slaughter and permanently protecting the last wild buffalo. For the Buffalo, Dan Brister Director Buffalo Field Campaign * TAKE ACTION: Park Service Proposes Permanent Bison Quarantine Program Take action here: http://org.salsalabs.com/o/2426/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=16217 Please *comment by September 12 *to stop a proposal to turn the domestication process of quarantining wild bison into an ongoing management practice. Seeking Buffalo Warriors for Approaching Field Season http://www.buffalofieldcampaign.org/aboutus/volunteeringatcamp.html Buffalo Field Campaign has seasonal openings for field volunteers. We have opportunities for every season, but are *in great need of folks during our field season which run from mid-November through May*, and is when wild bison are migrating into Montana. Any buffalo within Montana's borders is in danger of being shot on sight, hazed, or captured and shipped to the slaughterhouse. All volunteers are provided room, board, gear, and training. We cater to most any dietary need and respect vegan and vegetarian diets. We are located in a warm log cabin by beautiful Hebgen Lake, just a few miles outside of West Yellowstone, Montana. Click the link: http://www.buffalofieldcampaign.org/aboutus/volunteeringatcamp.html to learn more and make your plans. See you on the front lines! * By the Numbers The last wild, migratory buffalo populations are currently estimated at fewer than 4,000 individual animals, living in and around Yellowstone National Park. Wild, migratory bison are ecologically extinct throughout their native range in North America. *2013-2014* *Total Buffalo Killed: 653* Government Capture: 359 Buffalo Released from Capture: 41 Government Slaughter: Tribal - ITBC Slaughter: 157 Tribal - CSKT Slaughter: 101 Tribal - Nez Perce Slaughter: 0 Died in Government Trap: Died in Government Research Facility**: 1 Miscarriage in Government Trap: State Hunt: 31 Treaty Hunts: 291 Unknown Hunts: Poached in Yellowstone: 3 Sent to Quarantine: Sent to APHIS Research Facility: 60 Shot by Agents: Shot by Landowner: 2 Highway Mortality: 8 Cause of Death Unknown: *Total Killed in Previous Years** 2012-2013: 261 2011-2012: 33 2010-2011: 227 2009-2010: 7 2008-2009: 22 2007-2008: 1,631 Total Killed Since 2000: 4,891 *includes lethal government action, trap-related fatalities, quarantine/experiments, hunts, and highway deaths **bison stolen from the wild and placed in APHIS research facilities (such as for GonaCon) have already been counted as being "eliminated from the population" so bison that have died in a government research facility are not reflected in the total. ** Last Words of Buffalo Inspiration ~ Laura Gilpin* Life After Death These things I know: How the living go on living and how the dead go on living with them so that in a forest even a dead tree casts a shadow and the leaves fall one by one and the branches break in the wind and the bark peels off slowly and the trunk cracks and the rain seeps in through the cracks and the trunk falls to the ground and the moss covers it and in the spring the rabbits find it and build their nest inside the dead tree so that nothing is wasted in nature or in love. ~ Laura Gilpin -- Buffalo Field Campaign P.O.
