Yes the woman was the powerful one and her clan==they could change the chiefs mind very easy==almost a snap of the finger==Remember the one that made the clothes=the one that done the cooking==the one that done the garden==most of all think of the one that had the kids the most valuable part of the tribe Don't even think about crossing the clan==the chiefs never did SHADOW BEAR
I see you conveniently removed YOUR portion of the message. How come whenever someone disagrees with you, you have a cow? Yes I changed the subject line to "whatever" so you dont see as you always do that everything is a personal attack! You can make statements and no one else can? You can say whatever youwant and everyone else is on a Gag order! At your convenience you can check the archives and see any arguments that were on this list were involving you. Stop reading into things that just arent there. I only made a simple statement in ref to a message from Shadow bear. I didnt write to argue. Its not like I said to YOU "Dont you have a field to plow or something to feed in the barn or some cows to milk" I only added my thoughts. I thought this was everyones list not Alli's list. Many of you know this better than me==if the clan would approve of the man ==after a short ceremony he would then move in==all he had to do is make sure his family kept warm ==make sure there was food==if he didn't do this all wife had to do was put his clothes out ==he could not come back==he was not part of the family anymore==the clan made most of the rules and crossing them was not a good thing some times a warrior would get killed he's widow would move in with the man and his family and then he would have two wife SHADOW BEAR
One of the reasons we didn't have horses where we lived ==it was before we knew about iron horseshoes ==what we done was wrap the horses feet with raw hide==if you ever seen a wild horse the hoofs are bad looking==looks bad enough a horse someone told it is posible to trim those hoofs==those hoofs aregrowing to the side some time the horse might not walk again SHADOW BEAR
Barb, I think the Cherokee women were the heads of households and the men went to live in the women's home. I don't think think that would have happened. Kirby was also Indian, and I think the daughters and the father highly respected him. I wish I knew more, and I will probably never know. Julia

I have 2 natural kids One is still in Calif. One last year moved to Washington State from Calif. They each have 3 kids and my boy has one on the way. I have two children here in South Carolina with me. They are physically my sisters kids but I adopted them both when they were born. The girl is 19 and the boy 17. I don't really like winter much but I do like to watch and hear the snow fall. I love Spring here in South Carolina it is an explosion of color and smells.Calif was not much of anything in Spring except a bunch of kids at the beach. When I was young I use to love the smell of orange trees and eucalyptis treees in Southern Calif. But, those are long gone replaced my the smell of Asphalt, Gasoline, and gun powder. This place here in South Carolina is where I want to pass when the day comes. Barb SC
Tonya, In my family, Edmund Kirby married General William B Shepherd's daughter in North Carolina. Our family believed that the General was given two daughters of a chief before the Revolution and they were both married to him in an Indian ceremony during the Indian War. . He took them and the children to Virginia, but went back to North Carolina. James Kirby, wealthy oil and lumber baron, was one of their ? children. Sounds like good blood! Julia, P.S. The Kirbys were also Indian. If anyone is related, Jesse,Frank, Edmund Jr.,Henry, James, John, and two girls, Patsy and Sarah. JK

Well, its past my bed time, past my boys' bed time. So I'm off here for the night........got a mess to clean up in the morning. Good night all ;) Alli
Yeah you've probably got me figured out. I am young (35) busy w/my munchkin's, animals, genealogy, helping my mom figure her computer out, trying to get my home businesses going so I can stay home but bring in money to help hubby out financially (I don't like "not" working),home school my oldest son while "play" school w/my middle one. And definitely wanting to gain more knowledge about the Cherokee People as a whole while also trying to figure out my family heritage as well.........not an easy task when your heritage was never passed down thru the generations :( And I think you nailed Dan too. Hi Shadowbear, I sometimes think of leaving the list, because of so many emails, to read through, only because that is all I get done doing instead of housework, as I also work full time and have 5 grandchildren that I like to babysit as much as possible. But I am like you, and I enjoy everyone on the list, and I feel honored to be thought of like family by you Shadowbear.
