Glacier Song of the Horses - Navajo Before the Spaniards brought horses to the Dine (Navajo), they told about the Sun-God's walking across the heavens, carrying the sun on his back. When he reached the west, he hung the sun on a peg, so that it could cool off. He spent the evening with his family, resting after his long journey. After he was rested, he removed the sun from its peg, apparently hid it in some way as he retraced his steps, and returned in the darkness. In the morning, he started on his westward trip again. Of course, the ancient story continued to be told long after the following one was created. The Sun-God, Johano-ai, starts each morning from his home in the east and rides across the skies to his home in the west. He carries with him his shining gold disk, the sun. He has five horses--a horse of turquoise, one of white shell, one of pearly shell, one of red shell, and one of coal. The skies are blue and the weather is fair, the Sun-God rides his horse of turquoise, or the one of white shell, or the one of pearly shell. But when the heavens are dark with storm, he mounts the red horse or the horse of coal. Beneath the hoofs of the horses are spread precious hides of all kinds and also beautiful blankets, carefully woven and richly decorated. In the days gone by, the Dine (Navajo) wove rich blankets, said to have been found first in the home of the Sun-God. He lets his horses graze on flower blossoms, and drink from mingled waters. These are holy waters of all kinds--spring water, snow water, hail water, water from the four corners of the world. The Dine (Navajo) use such waters in their ceremonies. When any horse of the Sun-God trots or runs, he raises not dust, but pitistchi. It is glittering grains of mineral, such as are used in religious ceremonies. When a horse rolls and shakes himself, shining grains of sand fly from him. When he runs, not dust, but the sacred pollen offered to the Sun-God is all about him. Then he looks like a mist. The Dine (Navajo) say that the mist on the horizon is the pollen that has been offered to the gods. A Navaho man sings about the horses of the Sun-God in order that he, too, may have beautiful horses. Standing among his herd, he scatters holy pollen and sings this song for the blessing and the protection of his animals: How joyous his neigh! Lo, the Turquoise Horse of Johano-ai, How joyous his neigh, There on precious hides outspread, standeth he; How joyous his neigh, There of mingled waters holy, drinketh he; How joyous his neigh, There in mist of sacred pollen hidden, all hidden he; How joyous his neigh, These his offspring may grow and thrive forevermore; How joyous his neigh! And this is the problem I am having finding my family. my mother died when I was very young, and almost nothing was known about her family. But I was always told that she was part Choctaw or Cherokee. So i've been researching her family, and most surnames I've researched are listed on the dawes roll, but on the census so far everyone has shown up as white. And to make things harder, it looks like her family stayed in Mississippi instead of going to Oklahoma. So if they were Choctaw or Cherokee they probably didn't get listed on the dawes roll, cause they didn't go to Oklahoma. *Sigh* ----Original Message Follows---- From: shadowbear270@webtv.net (shadowbear270) Reply-To: CHEROKEE-L@rootsweb.com To: CHEROKEE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Cherokee Circle] Lost Date: Sat, 4 Mar 2006 11:46:20 -0600 I will tell this ==at one time the indian could not own land==so they went in to hiding in plain view ==changing names=and nationalities ==changing the way they dressed==and started talking loud==and to fit in they started not taking baths so much ==started being mean to animals ,kids ,and their wifes==remember the clans could not be controlled by the invaders so the clans were done away with==the clans would not put up with this meanest that goes on even now ## SHADOW BEAR ==== CHEROKEE Mailing List ==== <<>OPEN forum to all Cherokee topics - except Genealogy<>> <>Culture-History-Language-Folk lore and Truths<> Good Manners & Language is required to be on the list ALL the links you will need to sub and unsub or contact listowner below http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Ethnic-Native/CHEROKEE.html ============================== Search the US Census Collection. Me too! I'm sorry, I just got to my email. I was hurt badly in an accident recently, and it's hard for me to sit long enough to get to my email that often. But I've read the great stories you folks have been posting, and this discussion on the quietness trait. I have such a problem with that. I am CONSTANTLY getting into trouble because quiet people seem to make people around my home town nervous. Everyone constantly assumes I am angry, or better yet, giving them a dirty look cause I have small eyes. It's true I don't smile much, but times have been hard, and I never mean anything personally against anyone, but I swear if I don't come on with a great big gaping smile, and keep yapping, people start coming up with all sorts of insane reasons for my quietness. Its almost gotten me fired from jobs before, it has gotten me suspended at work, and people have attacked me because of it. It's really frustrating that people would rather you talk alot of nonsense and lies, than be truthful and just not want to talk right now. ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Pestana, Sherry" <PestanS@sutterhealth.org> Reply-To: CHEROKEE-L@rootsweb.com To: CHEROKEE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [Cherokee Circle] Hiding Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2006 15:04:55 -0800 I am glad to know it is one of our traits and that I am not the only one. Giving... this young Indian boy was going to boarding school. In fact, in those days, in boarding school you would go there and stay for nine or ten months at a time, then you could go home for a couple of months. But while at the boarding school, he got to really love his teacher. She was so nice and she just loved the dickens out of her students. He realized and knew that this teacher loved seashells like the big conch shell. So at the end of the year, he wanted to do something for his teacher, but he didn't have anything to give her. He knew that she loved shells so he went over to the ocean, he walked over there, it was about a twenty-mile distance and he found this beautiful shell. He came back over the weekend, when it came time for the end of school, and time for all the children to leave. Well he kind of hung back because he wanted to give his teacher this shell. So, after all had left, he came out and handed her this shell. She looked at it and it was just beautiful. She just really liked it and then all of a sudden she started to understand and realize what this little boy had gone through to get this shell... the distance he went. She looked at him and said, "You mean that you walked all the way over to the ocean and all the way back to give me this shell?" The little Indian boy looked at the teacher and you could kind of see a touch of a tear in his eye. He said, "The long walk is part of the gift!" From the archives Blue Panther Keeper of Stories.
I tried to live in town at one time and it lasted less than 3 months. I love the stillness of country living. I can see stars at night and hear animals and birds waking up in the mornings. I've always worked with the public but my private time is very quiet and peaceful. WES-Norma
