    1. Re: [CHAUDOIN] Emmaliza SHADOWEN
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: EugeneMartin52 Surnames: Chaudoin, Shadowen, Powers Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.chaudoin/44.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In searching for ancestor connection, a fellow researcher provided the following information from the 1850 Whitley County, KY census: 1, Samuel Shadowns, age 54, wife Ciller, age 51, children Ann age 13 and William age 11. This in district 2-400. 2. In district 1-519 is another Samuel Shadowen age 55, wife Nancy age 50, children Reuben age 18, Miles age 15, Jane age 14, Sally age 12, Hamilton age 11, John age 8, James age 7, Juda age 5 and Luisa age 3. 3. In district 1-518 is John Shadowen age 30, wife Polly age 28, children Samuel age 7, George age 6, Lewis age 5, Nancy age 3 and James age 1. The Samuel I was tracing is NO 1, Samuel Shadowens, AKA Samuel Chaudoin, s/o of Andrew M and Sarah Matthews Wheeler Moore Chaudoin. Andrew was apparently the first of the Chaudoin to move to KY, settling in Green County about 1795. The son, Samuel O was born about 1796 and married Prescilla (Ciller) Chandler about 1818 in Washington County, KY. They lived several places in addition to Whitley County, including Indiana in their first years. I am trying to connect a daughter Emmaliza, born about 1830 in Whitley County to this couple. She married Bennett Powers 1849 in Campbell County, TN, they subsequently moved to Lincoln County, KY. I have no idea who Samuel NO 2 is, or the branch of the family that he would connect. No. 3 John may be his son? Information for the surname "Chaudoin", though seldom listed by that spelling. In an 1860 Lincoln County KY census transcription, the spelling is Chandain or Chamdain. Other versions of the name are: Shadowen, Shadain, Shadoan, Chadain, and I have even seen Owens. This is a difficult family to pin down. The original Chaudoin were a French Huguenot family in VA, the first Chaudoin that came to KY was Andrew, in 1795. He settled in Green County. He was followed by several brothers in the next 25 years, mostly though the brothers used Green County as a starting place for the west. The Samuel Chamdain listed in the 1860 Lincoln county KY census, I believe is the son of Andrew Chaudoin. I believe Samuel, who I have has Samuel O Chaudoin was born after Andrew relocated to KY, which would be about 1796. His age would be a little off from the census. Samuel O married Prescilla (Ciller) Chandler about 1818 in Washington County, KY. I believe Samuel and Prescilla to be my g! reat X 3 g/ps though I haven't found documentation to make a positive connection yet. The timing of my g X 2 g/m's birth to marriage is in an information dead zone (1830 - 1849). Next door to Samuel in the 1860 Lincoln County census, I see John and Nancy Chamdain. John I believe to be the son of Samuel and Prescilla. On the other side of Samuel, you see William Chamdain residing with George W Turnbull. George W is married to Anna Chaudoin, sister of William. William I believe to be another son of Sam and Prescilla, he married Sidney P Petrey in 1861. Of note is the Samuel Chaudoin family was listed in the 1850 Whitley County census as Samuel Shadowens. To further the Chaudoin connection, in the 1860 Lincoln County census is Bennett Powers and wife, Emmaliza Chaudoin (my g X 2 g/m) whom I believe is the daughter of Samuel and Prescilla. In the Powers household is their daughter, Prescilla (Ciller) Jane Powers my g g/m, she married James F Oaks in 1871. . It has been my opinion for some time, that the grandparents of Prescilla Jane Powers Oaks, wife of James Franklin were Samuel and Prescilla Chandler Chaudoin. I haven't been able to find that connection of Prescilla's mother, Emmaliza Chaudoin Powers to Samuel and Prescilla. One obstacle is that Emmaliza married Bennett Powers 8 Apr 1849 in Campbell County, TN, so the 1850 census doesn't really make a connection. A second obstacle is the many spelling of the Chaudoin surname, which seems to be different in each area they lived. Samuel and "Ciller" Shadowens are listed in the 1850 Whitley census. This is further complicated by another Samuel and Nancy Shadowen of about the same age living nearby. Looking at a transcription on the 1860 Lincoln County Census, I see Samuel, age 76, and Prescilla, age 66, surname spelled Chamdain in household #1129. Next door in #1128 there is John and Nancy Chamdain; and in # 1130, living in the household of George Washington Turnbull, there is William Chamdain. I think both John and William Chamdain are the sons of Samuel and Precilla (Ciller) Chaudoin. I don't have access to the 1870 census, but suspect that Samuel Chaudoin , AKA, Chamdain/Shadowens/etc is still in Lincoln County. I think he died there in 1872, Prescilla, I don't know. Here is what I have for the children of Samuel and Prescilla Chaudoin: 1. Andrew, born abt 1823 Indiana Sally Norris, born abt 1825 NC. 2. Sarah, born abt 1826 Indiana, died aft 1910 OK George Powers, born 1823 NC. 3. John W, born 1 Mar 1827 Whitley county, KY, died 18 May 1913 Custer County NE Nancy E Shuffett abt 1860. 4. Emmaliza, born abt 1830 Whitley County Bennett Powers, born abt 1828 Knox County, KY on 8 Apr 1849 Campbell County, TN. 5. Anna, born abt 1836 George Washington Turnbull, born abt 1828 Lincoln County on 18 Mar 1851 Lincoln County (so that is why William Chamdain was living in the Turnbull Household # 1130.in 1860 Lincoln County Census). 6. William, born abt 1839 Whitley Sydney P Lynn Petrey, born 25 Jan 1845 Whitley on 11 Dec 1861 Lincoln County, KY. Hopefully some of our folks with a bit more data can add to the above, or show where I going in the wrong direction.
