Others that I know of: Sarepta Chaudion Little Born about 1831....Buried Mt Bethel Cemetary, Broomtown, AL Emily Jane Chaudion, My gggrandmother...was born about 1825 and died in 1890 and is buried in Old Moore Cemetary, Dekalb County AL on Lookout Mountain, Fort Payne, AL... She was married to Franklin Heard Standifer in 1843.They had a daughter Julie (my GGrandmother) who died when my grandmother was only 9 years old. Hi Audrey, I have contacted you in the past, In regard to the David Chaudoin you mention. He is my gggreat grandfather, his son James is my ggreatgrandfather whose son David Franklin is the father of Samuel Grant Chaudoin ,who is my Father. I have not found one word regarding James' wife in any record and if anyone can provide even one of her it would be of great benifit to me. I have heard through family by word of mouth only her name was Ann Rankin. I have not found James or his wife's grave site but the other Chaudoins, (his parents and siblings) are buried in Marion co Tn. mostly at the Cheekville cemetery in Whitwell. James' sister Sarah, married Anderson Cheek, for whom Cheekville is named. I am sending a brief overview of what I have found mostly at the Marion Co. Courthouse and the Whitwell Library. And I have been to the cemeteries in Marion Co. to see the graves. You are free to use this in any way you please, and I will be ever so happy for any info you can share with me. David Chaudoin David son of Francis and at least three of his brothers Andrew, John and Francis Jr, came to Green Co Ky ca 1800 [Green Co KY Deed Book 4 page 290-291--8 Mar 1806 John t WINSTON to David SHADOIN--$150--75 acres--Pitman Creek--Sally Anderson's lot-- Signed John T WINSTON; Wit: Joseph AKIN Recorded 8 March, 1806 by James Allen, clerk], and he was still there in 1813 and is listed on the Green Co tax record of that year. David is listed in the 1819 tax record of Hart Co Ky. The same year (1819) David's son James became the first Postmaster of Jasper Tn (Marion Co.) In the 1836 tax record of Marion Co Tn David is listed being in district #2 in Marion Co Tn. David, his wife Mary David, sister of {Samson David Knoxville Register, TN May 24, 1826 DIED on Thursday, the 16th instant, Sampson David, Esq. of Jacksboro. He was for many years a member of the legislature, and continued while in that situation so to discharge his duties as to receive the approbation of his constituents. He was amiable in private life, a man of integrity and a virtuous citizen}. and his son David Jr and daughter Mary are buried in the Cheekville cemetery in Whitwell Tn. David's children are, Sarah W, b 25th Aug 1798, in Virginia, Catherine, b 1799 in Virginia, David Jr, b 20th Sept 1807 in Green Co Ky. and Mary. His first son, [Family Bible records; James C Chaudoin born 6th of Jan 1795 and died 29th Oct 1837], was the first Postmaster of Jasper Tn. from 16 April 1819 to 15 Feb 1821. He was again the Postmaster from 14 May 1823 until his death the 29 Oct 1837. James C Chaudoin was on the first board of trustees for the Sam Houston Academy for boys in Marion County Tn. He and five other men bought the land and erected the building for the school. James bought and sold a number of tracts of land in Marion Co, mostly in and around the town of Jasper. The last one was an hundred acres sold to Mary Porter on Aug 4th 1837, just prior to his death in October of that year. His grave site is not known by me, but it is surely some where in the vicinity of Jasper. James' wife is unknown and some have said she died the year preceding his death. I have heard since I was a child that his wife's name was, Ann Rankin, but nothing has been found to verify that. I did find out that the Rankin family came to Marion Co Tn about the same time as James Chaudoin did but I have not found a girl named Ann in it. Some would like to think she might have been an Indian but there is no proof of that either. When James died he left young children, namely, Calvin Morgan, ( 18 yrs ), Martha D,(16 yrs), Emily Jane,(13 yrs), Mary E,(11 yrs), David Franklin,(9 yrs), Sarepta, (6 yrs),and Louisa. Four of them were under twelve years of age. James' brother, David Jr and Benjamin F Bridgeman were assigned administrators of his estate and guardians. Then in 1842, Alex M Kelly, the husband of Martha D was given bond as Guardian for them with Claiborn Gott, James Rankin & Raphael Shelton as security. It is possible that Sarepta and Louisa are twins. Sarepta's grave stone in the Mt Bethel Cemetery at Broomtown, Cherokee Co, Alabama, gives her birth date as the 31st of October 1831. And for Louisa the only dates I have found is when she was a boarder at her Aunt Sarah Cheeks home in the 1880 Marion County census, her age was given as 48 years old. Louisa married Austin Shipp, ca 1850 and they moved to Texas, he was a Dr of sorts and treated the confederate soldiers there in Texas, he took sick with camp fever and died in Texas during the Civil War. One account says that he is buried in Prairie Lea, Caldwell Co Tx. They had at least three children, James Calvin, Lemuel C, and Mary Elizabeth. Louisa must have come back to Marion County Tennessee after Austin's death, at least for a while, some accounts say she is buried in Ozona, Crockett Co Texas. Sarepta married William Little and they lived in Cherokee County Alabama. They had five children. Sarepta's husband William was believed killed on May 2 or 3, 1863 at Chancellorsville, VA. He was a Private in the 3rd Georgia Regt. enlisting across the Cherokee County line in Chattooga County, Georgia. He isn't buried at Mt. Bethel in Broomtown Alabama, but Sarepta and Wm.'s youngest child William & his wife are. Their stone is standing also their son, James Newton Little's marker is there. Sarepta is listed on the 1850 Alabama Census as living with her sister Emily Jane Chaudoin Standefer, Franklin H. Standefer was head of household. F. H. Standefer/age 35/m/farmer/$2000., b TN Emily Jane/age 26/ f/b.TN William A. C. / age 5/m/b AL Mary C./ age 3/ f/b AL Sarepta C. Chaudoin/age 17 /$800/ b TN (could be age 19) This was in Cherokee County, AL ...Her first son was born in 1851; so must have married in Cherokee Co. in 1850 Emily Jane, daughter of James C, married Franklin H Standifer, ca 1843 and they lived in Cherokee County Alabama. He is listed as a Doctor in some accounts. They had six children. David Franklin, ( b 4th May 1828 - d 15 July 1907,) the son of James Chaudoin married Lamira T Druin, ( b 25th Mar 1831 - d 16th Oct 1895 ), the 20th of Feb 1850. He then married Mrs.Charity Emaline Ferguson, June 19th 1898.David F. was a confederate soldier, Pvt. in company K Unit 59 Tn MTD Infantry. Lamira is the daughter of William H Druin b 1802 and Catherine M Chaudoin b 1799. [ Married in Green Co Ky the 19th Oct 1824 ] David F and Lamira's children are, Laura Alexander, Emma Rosetta, Harriet Roena, Adrian Grigsby, Sara Alice and Samuel Grant. Laura married Archibald Lewis Bracken, ca 1874, they had six children. Emma married Benjamin Rogers. [He was previously married to Mary E ?, and had three daughters, namely, Lilie A, Martha A, Millie M. Their respective ages in the 1880 Marion Co Tn Census, were BF 34, ME 26, LA 5, ME 3, MM 1 1/2 yrs]. Emma and Ben did not have any children. Harriet married O M Bracken when she was around tweny years old and they had four children, two boys and two girls. O M died when they had been married around ten or eleven years. They lived in Marion Co Tn and she is buried in a family plot near where they lived west of Jasper. Adrian married Millie Blansit the 7th of Feb 1883 and they had three children, (Bonnie, Herschal & Infant son) however one died an infant and is buried in the Owens Cemetery in Sequatchie Tn. Adrian was the Postmaster in Sequatchie and later in the 1910 census he is listed as a furniture salesman in Chattanooga Tn. He married again in 1925. Sarah Alice was a school teacher and never married. She loaned her coat to one of her students during a blizzard and tried to make it home without enough protection, she became sick and never recovered, dying at the age of 27 years old. Samuel Grant married Amanda Condra the 19th of June 1887, they had five children, Oscar Wiggs, Eunice Lamira, Hubert Leonard, Ina May and Bertha Lillian. Amanda died of typhoid fever the 27th of July 1922, And he then married Ellie Elizabeth Burrage the 25th of November 1923 and they had six children, Helen Elizabeth, David Henry, Martha Alice, Samuel Benton, Mary Lloyd and Anna Vey, Also they adopted a daughter, Jessie Ruth (Goff). Helen only lived about 24 hours and Mary Lloyd died when she was nine months old, (cause of death, asthma and double pneumonia). Sarah, Emma, Samuel G, David F and Lamira are all buried in the Chaudoin family cemetery at Jasper and Samuel's first wife Amanda Condra is there also. Two of Samuel's children, (Helen and Mary Lloyd), by his second wife, (Ellie E. Burrage), are buried there too. There is a Nancy (Chaudoin) Lane buried there also but I haven't found who her parents are. Sarah W, b 25th Aug 1798 - d 19th June 1889, daughter of David & Mary, married Anderson Cheek, b 4th June 1798 - d 26th April 1846, they had four children, Eliza, Thomas, Ann, Nancy Valina, and lived at Cheekville, Marion County Tn. which is now the town of Whitwell. They are buried in the Cheekville Cemetery there. After Anderson's death 26 April 1846, she married Henry Yarnell, and they must have both been pretty well fixed financially for they made a contract that what you have is yours and what I have is mine. She owned two slaves, (Dicey and her son Morgan). In the 1880 census after the slaves had been set free, living right next door to Sara W Cheek were Dicey age 49 and son Monroe Cheek. age 23, (Freed slaves often took the family name as their own). Catherine, b 1799, daughter of David & Mary, married William H Druin b 1802, the 24th of October 1824 in Green County Ky. They are listed on the Marion County Tn. census of 1830, 1840, and 1860. They had six children including James A, William H, Margaret C and Lamira T, who married David Franklin Chaudoin her first cousin. The names of their first two children are unknown and must have died between the 1830 census and the 1840 census. Mary Chaudoin, b 18 Dec 1809 b 18 July 1880, the daughter of David Sr and Mary David who was never married that I can find, is also buried in the Cheekville Cemetery in Whitwell Tn From: "Audrey Shields Hancock" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 24, 2007 1:41 PM Subject: [CHAUDOIN] Concerning James Chaudoin 1794-1837 > Letter to R.
