>From the files of R. S. Sanders: Original Copies of Records (Abstracted by Audrey with some notes added.) Spellings/information as seen within the documents cited vary. I believe that the fancy ending on Shadowen in records began looking like a "s" and therefore the name perhaps went from Shadowen to Shadowens. Since many of our folks of early year were illiterate (reading and spelling of their surnames included) they took the spelling of the clerk/recorder or how it was pronounced and went with that spelling as their children began schooling. Note within these records we have Claiborn's surname spelled Chadowens, Shadowen, & Shadowens. We have his given name spelled: Claiborn and Claborn. His own signature looks like he signed: Claiborn Shadowens. One record below seems to show "D. Claiborn Shadowens." Perhaps someone can help us out and give his line of descent from Francois Chaudoin, as they know it to be. Audrey ************************** Adjutant General's Office Washington D.C.
