    1. [CHAUDOIN] Obituary: Mrs. M. A. Chaudoin
    2. Audrey Hancock
    3. >From the records/files of R. S. Sanders: This obituary was handwritten out, and perhaps not in the script of R. S. Sanders. This is probably Matilda Ann (Wilkerson) Chaudoin, the first wife of Lewis Chaudoin, Jr. who died perhaps on 19 April 1832. It sounds as though she perhaps died of consumption (T.B.). The "little son" is not named, and I do not have his name. Can anyone supply that information? According to my (ASH) records, Lewis, Jr. was s/o Lewis CHAUDOIN (Sr.) and Katurah "Catherine" "Kitty" MIMMS. Lewis CHAUDOIN (Sr.) was s/o Francois/Francis CHAUDOIN & Sarah WEAVER. If anyone has additional information or corrections to this please let me know. After Matilda's death, I have that Lewis, Jr. married a Jane E. Nelson, but I do not know if that is correct. Can someone validate? Audrey ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Obituary May 18, 1832 "The Religious Herald" "M. A. CHAUDOIN Died in the county of Goochland, on the 19th ult. of a pulmonary complaint, Mrs. M. A. Chaudoin, consort of Lewis Chaudoin, junior, after an illness of nearly two years, which she bore with Christian patience and fortitude. She professed religion for five years before her death, but was not baptized until last summer, at which time she was so low, that some of her friends feared it was unsafe for her to be baptized; but she followed her Lord in the watery tomb, and was not known to suffer thereby the samllest injury. On seeing a change in her looks, the night on which she died, some friend asked her--'What is the matter?,' to which she replied, 'I hope I am dying.' She was then asked 'if she felt Jesus precious to her.' She answered, 'Yes.' And in a few moments expired. She has, we trust, entered into that rest where troubles are no more. But she has left behind her a kind husband, and one little son, besides a number of friends and relatives to lament her death. May we all remmber that we must shortly follow."

    2. Audrey Hancock
    3. >From the records/files of R. S. Sanders: This obituary was handwritten out, and perhaps not in the script of R. S. Sanders. Nothing in the obituary tells us of the parentage or lineage of Virginia Chaudoin, nor her birthdate. Her deathdate appears to have been December 27, 1862 in Goochland County, Virginia when published in April of 1863. If anyone can identify the parents and / or line of Virginia Chaudoin, the information would be greatly appreciated. Audrey Obituary April 23, 1863 "The Religious Herald" "VIRGINIA CHAUDOIN Died of consumption, in Goochland, December 27, Miss Virginia Chaudoin. If the object of life be to prepare for an eternal state of being beyond the grave, and to incite others to that preparation, then may our sister be said fully to have fulfilled her mission--though cut off in the morning of her day. In its first hours she commenced her work. Though of an amiable, natural disposition, feeling the need of an atonement for sin, she applied to a Saviour all sufficient, rejoiced in His forgiving love, and cheerfully performed His service. But soon our Father saw that her work was done, and sent for her to Himself. And gloriously impressive was the scene of her farewell to earth. She fully realized its solemnity; and yet, instead of viewing death as the grim monster, he appeared to her as the kind friend, who had come to carry her home to heaven. In her non language, all was peace. With a mingled earnestness and deliberation, which was sublimely eloquent, she impressed on each member of the family and each attending friend, the claims of religion and its bright reward, while loving messages were sent to each friend who was absent, and the smallest act of kindness was gratefully acknowledged. May each one thus addressed profit by her exhortations--follow her in life as she followed Jesus, triumph with her in death, and at last, reign with her in immortal glory."

    2. Audrey Hancock
    3. >From the files of R. S. Sanders: Original Copies of Records (Abstracted by Audrey with some notes added.) Spellings/information as seen within the documents cited vary. I believe that the fancy ending on Shadowen in records began looking like a "s" and therefore the name perhaps went from Shadowen to Shadowens. Since many of our folks of early year were illiterate (reading and spelling of their surnames included) they took the spelling of the clerk/recorder or how it was pronounced and went with that spelling as their children began schooling. Note within these records we have Claiborn's surname spelled Chadowens, Shadowen, & Shadowens. We have his given name spelled: Claiborn and Claborn. His own signature looks like he signed: Claiborn Shadowens. One record below seems to show "D. Claiborn Shadowens." 3. Hello, Cheryl, Thank you for sharing your lineage. This helps to bring together some of those families about whom I am posting. I have added your website to our CHAUDOIN site at: I notice that you name David's second wife as Mrs. Martha OSWELL. Do you happen to know her maiden name? On the Illinois site they do not mention that she was (Mrs.) as they do with other entries. Thank you for sharing. 3. Would be grateful for others' thoughts, knowledge, and information concerning families and relationship of those listed from the files of R. S. Sanders. Would appreciate others posting any vital information that they may have in their possession, so that we can bring our family lines together with vital records or family records that will support lineages. If incorrect, then things can be corrected with the more information we have at hand. If this file of R. S. Sanders hadn't been recovered from a chest drawer at an auction. A kind person recognized the value of the material within and posted the find on the CHAUDOIN BB. All would have been lost. We have lost avid seasoned researchers of the CHAUDOIN family: Jeter Grimsley, R. S. Chaudoin, and Robert Righter...all who contributed information in the past, but not everything. These men communicated with each other and others for many years prior to my entry into the CHAUDOIN world of my husband. Both Andrew and Sarah are evidently going by the Shadowens surname. Any thoughts or knowledge anyone? ash

    3. In R. S. Sanders CHAUDOIN papers was a letter dated 2 July 1985 from Mrs. Lawson (Virginia) Nichols of Columbia, Missouri. The letter is addressed to Mr. H. B. Morton of Irvington, Kentucky concerning Mr. Morton's request for PAINE/PAYNE and BLYTHE information. Perhaps someone may recognize a CHAUDOIN, etc. family connection. Audrey Along the side, Mrs. Nichols has a list of "Lawson & Virginia's Ancestral Lines:." These include Allen, Askins, Bates, Betz, Blythe, Bowne, Boyd, Bullard, Burnett, Carter, Carner, Chaudoin, Constant, Cornell, Claiborne, Clinkinbeard, Crawford, Dabney, Dale, Davis, Duncan, Feake, Fones, Forbis, Foster, Glenn, Gurganey, Hamilton, Harbour, Harris, Hedger, Hollingsworth, Jones, Lampley, Lupton, Martin, Melson, Mooney, Morris, Nichols, Paine (Payne), Phillips, Overton, Sapp, Shaudoun, Smith, Spry, Stevenson, Steward, Strode, Thomason, Thorne, Witt, Winn (Wynne). She does not indicate which are of her line and which are of her husband's line, so we do not know how Chaudoin and Shaudoun might fit into one of their lineages. Extract of information evidently in response to a query written to her from Mr. Morton: Priscilla Paine (Payne) born 2 Feb 1810 Kentucky; died 1 Apr 1886 Boone Co. or Calloway Co., Missouri. Married (1) Joseph Spry who d 24 Oct 1843 Married (2) John Blythe, bro/o Daniel Blythe. Indicates: Daniel Blythe (bro/o John Blythe) was her "great-grandfather on another line!"

    3. JANE E. CHAUDOIN Died, in the county of Goochland, on the 29th December 1841, Mrs. Jane E. Chaudoin, consort of Lewis Chaudoin, Jr., after an illness of about 7 months, which she bore with Christian fortitude and patience. Mrs. Chaudoin was for ten years a strict member of the Licking Hole Baptist Church, though for some years she but seldom had it in her power to attend the house of God for worship--which was to her a source of deep regret. During her illness she frequently talked with her husband about the old state of the church, and said there was too little love among the brethren for the Lord's cause to prosper--and that professors were too much after the fashions of this world, and too little after those of Christ. She often conversed with her husband on the subject of death and eternity; she said if it was the Lord's will that she should recover she would be glad to be spared a few years to see her children nearer the years of maturity; yet she wished the will of the Lord to be done, and that she lay in the hands of the Lord as clay in the potter's hands. She said she believed, if it was the Lord's will to take her, that he would manifest himself unto her as he doeth not unto the world. On the Sabbath evening before she died on Monday morning, she became sensible that her departure was near at hand, she asked her husband what he would do with the children--and asked him if he was willing to give her up; then called to another person, a by-stander, saying, are you ready to go? and to another, by name, exhorting him to meet her in Heaven; and asked if there was no sinners there--for she wished to talk with everybody--then put up an earnest prayer to God to bless her husband, and that he might bring his children up in the right way--and prayed for strength to talk more, and repeated a few verses, not recollected well enough to be named, as the family was in tears and trouble. After her strength was nearly exhausted, she took her husband and his sister by the hands and bid them farewell. She said but little more during the night, only asking for these things she wanted, such as teas and c. to moisten her mouth. In the course of the night, she said to her kind brother who came in to sit up with her, don't you think I am going home fast? -- and praised and rejoiced in God her Savior, saying glory to God and the Lamb forever. A few minutes before she departed, while the company were at breakfast, she told her husband that she had given herself up entirely to the Lord and that she trusted him alone and that he must truste alone in the Lord for salvation--and that if we would receive of him we must ask in faith; for, said she I have never asked in faith, but he has given. In a shor time, she breathed her last. She has left behind her a kind husband and ten small children to bemoan their loss; but thanks be to God, their loss to her gain. He is led to say, the Lord gave and the Lord taketh away - blessed be the name of the Lord, for he doeth all things. (Source: "The Religious Herald," February 10, 1842: Obituary: Jane E. Chaudoin)

    3. Lewis Chaudoin, s/o Francois CHAUDOIN & Sarah WEAVER: >From the records and collections of R. S. Sanders: "LEWIS CHADOIN (sic) The author remembers with lively interest an occasional interview wit the humble, simple-minded Chadoin; when his pilgrimage nearly close, he was still waiting upon God, and aiming to honor him. He was truly a good man, esteemed by all as such, though his pulpit talents were not such as to excite special attention. We present, in his own language, the leading exercises in his mind in being led to a knowledge of the truth. It is the substance of a statement made by him, in the Richmond Enquirer, the oldest political paper in Virginia, and one of the oldest in the United States. It was written chiefly for the benefit of his numerous friends and relatives, with whom he had, as he said, no better means of communicating:--- 'I was born in the Count of Chesterfield, in A.D. 1754, and am now a resident of Goochland County, Virginia. When about fourteen years of age, I was greatly concerned on the subject of religion; so much so, that for seven years my mind was almost wholly occupied with it. During the latter part of the seventh year, I felt afraid that God would never pardon my sins, but came to this resolution, that although there might not be forgiveness for me, yet would I die, seeking the pardoning love of God. Greatly was I impressed; great, indeed, with my burden; but the Lord enabled me to believe; and when I thus believed, my burden was gone. I felt happy beyond expression. I felt that I could have persuaded the whole world to believe. For three months after this period, my mind was so occupied with religion, that the whole amount of time spent in thinking of other matters did not, I think, amount to a single day. After this my peace of mind was interrupted for about one year. I was then called on to discharge the duties of a soldier in the revolutionary war, which I did for one year. After my return home, I felt it my duty to engage in the work of the ministry; but being poor and unlearned, I labored to remove this impression for two years. It seemed, however, that I could not be happy without making an effort to discharge a duty which now seemed still more plain. The effort was made; the Lord removed all difficulties, and I was set fully at liberty. For the last fifty-three years I have been laboring to call sinners to repentance. In the first place, I built upon Christ, believed faith and repentance necessary to salvation, and have never since changed my views. I have, in no instance, had a stipulated salary for ministerial services, but have always been satisfied with such free-will offerings as brethren or friends migh give. I have joined in matrimony six hundred and twenty-five couples; have preached more than five hunded funeral sermons; and although in my eighty-fourth year, can, by the blessing of God, ride ten milies and preach two sermons the same day.' This was addressed to the editor of the Enquirer, from his residence in Goochland County, December 1st, 1837. He lived, still to proclaim the Saviour he love, several years, and then fell asleep. His death occurred January 4th, 1845, being nearly ninety-one years old. For many years he preached monthly at Cartersville. An incident is related concerning him at that place. During a long, dry season, he was observed to pray very fervently that God would send rain upon the earth; and the same afternoon a refreshing shower descended, to the joy of all. Although there may have been no special connection of his prayer with the fall of the rain, yet the people, many of them unconverted, had so much confidence in him, that they made up a contribution of fifty dollars and presented to him. His funeral serman was preached by Elder Andrew Broaddus, from the words, 'Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.' He closed his discourse in the following language:-- 'He who restored Lazarus to a state of mortal life, can cause this mortal to put on immortality, and his promise is pledged for the glorious consummation. The rainbow of hope is struck on the dark cloud of death; it bestrides the graves of all believers; the blessed token of an approaching morning of cloudless light, a day of endless peace and joy. Let me remind you that our old brother shall rise again. Humble and unpretending in his course, his life was watched, and his death was marked, by the Great Shephert and Keeper of grace. He was the friend of Jesus. He now sleeps; but the Redeemer comes to awake him out of sleep.' " (Source: Taylor, Virginia Baptist Ministers, Vol. 2, pp. 219-221: LEWIS CHADOIN)
