I joined this list hoping to find information on a 3g uncle of mine. Obediah CHASE m. Minerva Herd MERRITT (b. 1831 Grainger Co., TN, dtr of Edward MERRITT and Sarah CARDEN MERRITT) 17 Nov 1850 in Grainger Co., TN. According to an affidavit filed by Minerva's brothers Lewis MERRITT and Ancil Lee MERRITT in 1876 (found in their father Edward MERRITT's War of 1812 pension file), Minerva and Obediah had two daughters and four sons (names and dates not given). In 1876 Minerva resided in Doniphan Co., KS. Obediah "enlisted in Capt. Thomas Co. D old 13th or 25th Missouri Vols commanded by Col. Peabody. Is said to have been killed in 1863 on the H. & St. Joseph R.R. between Hanibal and St. Joseph by Bill Anderson's band of rebel bushwhackers." The 1880 Doniphan Co., KS census lists "Miranda" CHASE 42 in Burr Oak Twp. Both she and her parents were b. in TN. She is found with her son Louis F. CHASE 15 b. KS, his parents b. in TN. Allowing for the usual census discrepancies, this may be Minerva and a son she was carrying at Obediah's death. I have not located the CHASEs in the 1860 census yet, nor have I found Obediah in a CHASE family in TN in 1850. I am sending for Obediah's Civil War pension file, but in the meantime, I'd like to hear from anyone who might recognize the family. I have a lot of material on the MERRITTs, but nothing on Obediah's parents or children. Thanks! Victoria Sullivan vlsulliv@jps.net
