I found an interesting surname site. It is: http://www.hamrick.com/names/ It shows maps of the changing density of 50,000 surnames in each state at different times from 1850 to 1990. For example, you can select "Chase" and opt for all years and watch the Chase's spread across America. Likewise with Chace. There are a lot of other surname facts, statistics and alleged origins at the site. It has one unavoidable shortcoming. For roughly every male who carried a given surname, there is a female that adopted a new one. So, as we see the Chase's move across America, we have to guess the feminine lines moved in similar directions under other names. Regardless, this is a fascinating site.
