    3. Keith and all, I don't want to start a war. This is not the list for arguments over commercial genealogical services. And, I know some folk hold a strong dislike for Broderbund, though I have no idea why. This is what the FTM contributer agreement says: "By contributing your family tree to the World Family Tree Project, you give Broderbund Software, Incorporated, your permission to reproduce, compile, and distribute all information in your contributed Family File. The World Family Tree CDs are copyrighted; however, our copyright does not limit you from publishing your own family information as you see fit, nor from selling it or giving it to others." Now, from my research, I note that most bound and published genealogical research reports seem to be copywrighted. So, I don't find Broderbund's provision surprising. I love their online search functions and library. I have had many contacts thanks to those who use FTM's site. FTM must not be entirely evil. Our state library and genealogical society members make wide use of the FTM disks. NEHGS sells them. The online library at FTM has the full text of the Chamberlain report on Chases. I have found some wonderful stuff there on Chase, Mason, Craycraft, Sherman and others of my lines. Gendex appears to me to be another company just trying to make a profit. I have no complaints about them either. We give them our data for free, too. However, they sell our data, too, just as if it were copywrighted. I am not sure I understand theircharging method, but they seem fine, as long as they continue their on-line service. Broderbund offers one tiny advantage. After they sell their CDs the information is still out there, even if they cease to be on-line. Someday, like other companies have, they could even sell their/our data to Broderbund! I remain comfortable with either or both firms. I am also comfortable with several others. Sharing information is the thing that keeps genealogy alive. I would still go for wide spread distribution to reach all the Chases who ever come along. But, I also support going with Gendex.
