    1. RE: [CHASE-L] Chase Journals 1872-2887
    2. Judy Needham
    3. Letter sent in answer to me personally from Barb Austin - who asked me to forward to the CHASE List. JCN said:: I question the following statements: Gen. from Journal: Issue: William, born ca 1622, in England; Mary, born in May 1637, in Roxbury; and Mary (2) born in 1639 in Yarmouth. II William Chase (2) born ca 1622, in England, married Alice Fish and was a resident of Yarmouth after coming to America with his parents. He died Feb 27, 1685. His children were: William, Jacob, John, Elizabeth, Abraham, Joseph, Benjamin and Samuel.< JCN said: <<First, William I, the Immigrant and his wife Mary, are said to have had three children, William b. in England as early as 1627 (You give his date of birth as 1622), Mary, b. about 15 May 1637 and Benjamin, b. in 1639. (You have a Mary listed twice, and no Benjamin.)>> Barb Austin (who transcribed Edward Chase's Journal answers:) Barb: First, I would assume that Mary (2) born 1639, was born after the first Mary born 1637 had died. Rep. Men & Old Families does not list Benjamin at all, altho a Chase biography that a friend had made up years ago, lists him as 3rd child (or 4th counting the first Mary) b 1639 Roxbury MA, d Freetown MA 1730 m 1673 Portsmouth to Phillipa Sherman. Said chart also lists Wm I & Mary married in 1622, for what it's worth. <And, then, you have William II marrying an Alice FISH when generally the names of both William's first and second wives are said to be unknown. Can you tell me the source for Alice FISH as the second William's wife?< I can tell you but you won't like it. It was a member of the Chase family who was 101 years old when she passed away in 2000. She had a genealogy chart made up years ago and lists, with no sources, Mary TOWNLEY as wife of Wm I. It lists Alice FISH as first wife of William II, m 1644 and 2nd mar to ? ca 1670. This came from the chart and I was in error not to list that as a source, although of course it is not authenticated. Have you checked Torreys early New England marriages, or whatever it's name is? With the exception of the last names of the two Marys of Wm. I and Wm II, all the rest came from "Representative Men and Old Families of Rhode Island" as stated. Let me state right here that I edited that info so as to shorten it a bit, I didn't want to write a book. I make no claims for its authenticity, I merely include it. You must do your own verification, but I'm sorry not to have mentioned the chart in the first posting. Barb Austin Judy Chace Needham
