    3. Hey Harriet! Look how they messed up my GG grand parents in the Illinois marriage index. Their names were Ashur Chase and Irena Axtell, married in Knox County. 3. In response to Harriet's <<<Hey kids! Check out the Chases who got married in Illinois>>>, Lonnie said <<<Hey Harriet! Look how they messed up my GG grand parents in the Illinois marriage index.>>> I also have a "mixed up" story from the Illinois Marriage Records - a GGGrandmother, whose descendant married a Chace, was listed as Mary HEAD, not STROUD as many "cousins" had assured me was her name. Even the state has her listed as HEAD. I requested a copy of the marriage certificate from the State of Illinois to verify the correct name. I requested it under the name listed, HEAD. When I received it, a hand-written return from the local JP in 1845, I studied it, and sure enough, her name was STROUD. But, because this was an old, creased paper, and the name was found in the crease, the compiler recorded it as HEAD - what he/she saw. Mary STROUD does not exist in the state records! Because this branch of the family has promulgated a huge amount of misinformation on the Internet about the family origins, I simply refused to believe their contention that GGG Mary was a STROUD. I wasted a great deal of time spinning my wheels - and there was a HEAD family in that place at that time, which muddied the waters considerably. So, the moral of the story is to always view the original - or a copy of the original - if you can! Judy Chace Needham
