    3. Hello Chase seekers..... In 1884 there was a shipwreck as appended from newspaper of the time below. DOes anyone know these Chases ????Nov 9-1884 Miramichi is a river in New Brunswick that empties into Northumberland Strait near Prince Edward Island....Bathurst is about 60 miles north of Chatham... If the Vigilant was sailing for Boston, Capt E.D. Chase and son Charles might have been Yarmouth or Roxbury Chases......or Newberry if they're Aquila's line... here 'tis thanks Derek 2865 Wreck of the "Vigilant" at Miramichi - Chatham, Nov. 9 - The storm of Wednesday last was more severe along the coast of northern N.B. than at first realized and the news of the saddest casualty yet reported reached Chatham on Saturday forenoon, followed that eve. by the arrival of the survivors of the crew of barquentine "Vigilant", of and from Bathurst, laden with laths for Boston and now a total wreck at Tabusintac on the north side of Miramichi bay. ... the third or fourth sea sweeping the deckload and carrying off nearly everyone on board. All but Wm ROBINSON, coloured, of Barbadoes, cook, regained the vessel. ... On his way, Capt. CHASE became entangled in the wreckage and being nearly exhausted, cried out that he was afraid he was gone, when his son, Charles D. CHASE left the forward house and made for him, only at once to sink in the darkness and angry sea. Finally Capt. Chase extricated himself ... About sunrise, Daniel McKENDY of Douglastown, who had taken passage as an extra hand, died from exposure. The saved are Capt. E.D. CHASE; Michael DALEY, Bathurst (Glouc. Co) first mate; Robert FLEMING, Bathurst, second mate; Kenneth McLELLAN, Chatham and a Portugese sailor. 10 November 1884 D.T.
