Aquila (1580-1643) Born in Chesham but went to London before 1606, for he married Martha Jelliman in London in that year. He was a merchant Tailor and citizen of London. There is a puzzle about his death and burial. In the register of St. Nicholas Cole Abbey are found these entries: 9th Fe. 1643/4--Aquila Chase Tailer was buried at the feet of the widow Maie (she has been buried in January of that year)10th Jan. 1659/60--Aquila Chase was buried in ye cloister before Mr. Parker's widow. It seems improbably that there were two Aquila Chases. One possibility is that the second entry records a reburial. But, there is little chance of elucidation, because the church was rebuilt in 1677 and was bombed to a ruin in the Second WW p. 10 The Children of Aquila 1 j (1)1580-1643 The register of St. Nicolas Cole Abbey shows that he had five daughters born between 1609 and 1623: three died young. He emigrated to America in 1640 and settled in New Hampshire,. He died in 1670. These two brothers had large families and are the ancestors of a vast number of descendants. CHAPTER 9 >From the first half of the 17th century until recent times there have been Chase emigrations to America. p. 52--Richard's fourth son Aquila (1580-1643) became a Merchant Taileor of London. He had five daughters and two sons and the baptisms of the daughters and one son are in the register of St. Nicholas, Cole Abbey. AQUILA 2 His baptism is in the Cole Abbey register---9th Apr. 1626 but from other sources it is known that he was born in 1618. Neither the baptism or the year of birth of Thomas has been found but there is every reason to believe that he was a son of Aquila 1 because in an American deed he is referred to as the brother of Aquila 2. He may have been the elder. The late baptism of Aquila 2 and the absence of that of Thomas could be due to Aquila 1 being born of a nonconformist family, and probably Baptist. In this branch of the Chesham family there was a strong dissenting element. As often happened, a man who became prosperous and ---I have already copied this section for you. Aquila and Thomas emigrated and landed at Hampton, New Hampshire, early in 1640 they were granted land in June 1640. It would be a work of supererrogation to describe the lives of these two brothers because they and their many descendants have been so carefully traced and detailed in that excellent book SEVEN GENERATIONS OF THE DESCENDANTS OF AQUILA AND THOMAS CHASE, compiled by John Carroll Chase and George Walter Chamberlain, published in `1928. It incorporates the information in the Chase Chronicle, the official publication of the Chase-Chace Family Association, the founder of which was William K Gould, a descendant of Aquila. The relevant facts about these two brothers are in pedigree No. 2. Both made wills which are quoted in the above-mentioned book which has a reproduction of a tablet in Caen stone in the New England Historical Genealogical Society's building in Boston. ------- Now I have copied from the Noble Book for all of you to decide for yourselves. Good luck to all of you Aquila Chase descendants. If you don't connect to the Chesham Chases it's really terribly sad. I have a simply wonderful picture of that very lovely and beautiful Manor House that I was hoping I could share with you all. Ginger in Az.
