Re: the colour (since this is British) of the canton & lion on the Chesham Chase device: the Chase/Chamberlaim quote is for a "canton or, a lion passant azure". I also have a more modern description (which I got when I was in England a couple of years ago) of "the most ancient Coat of Arms" found for the CHASE family (unspecified branch) which describes "four golden crosses and on a gold square top left a blue lion." I guess the early Chases didn't go in for gold lions, preferring blue ones. Dick C.
