According to the Naval Historical Center, while the title of Ensign was first used to designate the bearer of the flag in medieval times, the French first adopted the title for the lowest rank of an officer in infantry units, and that rank was also used by American military units for the lowest commissioned officer rank in colonial times. It did not become a naval rank until 1652 when it was adopted and applied to graduates of the Naval Academy. Dick Chase
