Good point! --------------------------------------------------------------------- In a message dated 10/18/02 2:32:08 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > Also, why was Ensign Moses Chase an ensign?  I seem to remember that's a > naval title. > > And what religious denomination did the early Chases subscribe to in > Newbury? > The title of Deacon was important enough to include in the biographical > material, so I gather their church was their  rock. > With respect to Ens. Moses, my notes show:   Records show Moses as owner of 100 acres of land in Newbury.  He was a self-styled weaver, and also acquired the title "Ensign" when he served from 1704 to 1710 with that rank in Captain Hugh March's Company of snow shoe men.  (Note: this period coincided with what was known as Queen Anne's War, during which the French (from Canada) and their Indian allies raided English settlements throughout New England where they were engaged by both British troops and local militia.  Presumably Moses was involved in this conflict. And about their religion, my notes for Seth (Grandson of Ens. Moses): "a comb maker";  also, a Deacon of the Baptist Church in Sutton, Mass.[cb.FTW]      Seth was the third child of Moses Chase and Elizabeth Wells.      Records show him to have been a comb maker.   Also of interest is a comment that while he had been a member of the Congregational Church in Sutton, he joined the Baptist Church, becoming a Deacon.
