Hannah (Blethen) Chase, wife of Stephen6 Chase, was 106 years old when she died. , When she was 100 years old she had 10 children, 66 grandchildren, 132 great grandchildren, 3 of whom were of the fifth generation. The time when Stephen5 Chase first settled in Durham, Maine, is still uncertain, as is also the exact time of his migration to Unity, Maine, then called “Twenty-five Mile Pond Plantation," but tradition tells us that he, with his small family, followed up the Kennebec in a boat to the mouth of the Sebasticook, a small tributary river, finding its source in Unity Pond, now called Windermere Lake. Pushing on to the head of the Sebasticook, he made a landing, choosing a place for a home on an eminence, called "The Horseback," overlooking the pond. Its shores still echoed the war cry of the Indian, and in the forest still roamed the bear, the wildcat, the moose and the deer. The lake alive with fish gave, with the abundant game of the forest, ample return for their hardihood and dangers encountered. Benjamin5, b.
