    1. [CHASE-L] Aquila Chase
    2. I do wish that there were not quite so many incorrect genealogies of Aquila of Newbury MBC floating about the internet and elsewhere. For the record: Despite exhaustive searches by very reputable genealogists, NO records have been found that provide competent and verifiable information on the ancestry of Aquila and Thomas Chase who settled (from England) in Hampton, MBC in or about 1638. (Given this, it is a little difficult to establish any kinship between them and the William Chase who is the progenitor of yet another Chase line in this country.) The ONLY information that we have about this Aquila's birth is contained in a 25 Sep 1666 court deposition, in which it is stated that he was "aged about forty-eight years." This would make the year of his birth about 1618. There is no record of when Thomas was born. There is no record of their parents, or birthplace, only a reasonable assumption that it was in England. While it might be a reasonable inference to draw that they may well be related to the Chesham Chase line (given the not too common Aquila names), it can only be an inference, for there have been NO records found that substantiate this. The Aquila who was son of Richard (of Chesham) is clearly not the Aquila of Hampton & Newbury, MA. J. Montgomery Seaver makes this ludicrous linkage in his "Chase Family History", but he lacks credibility as a genealogist in more ways than just this. I suggest anyone interested in the Chesham Chase line (including the London Aquila who married Martha Jelliman and was the father of Aquila bpt 1626) look at the information on our CHASE web site. Some of the dates for the Chesham Chases got a bit fouled up somehow in the posting process, but the lineage is correct based on the best information available. Dick Chase
