JONATHAN 4 CHASE (Daniel,3 Daniel2), born in Newburv 1 Mar. 1732/3; died in Hopkinton, N. H., 6 Feb. 1815, aged 83. He married 7 June 1760, SARAH STICKNEY, daughter of Col. Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Carleton) Stickney of Concord. She was born in Rumford (now Concord), 14 Oct. 1737, and died in Hopkinton, 10 Mar. 1812, aged 74. Capt. Jonathan was at the battle of Bennington and the tak- ing of Burgoyne. In 1755 he belonged to Col. Rogers's Rangers in the French War. In an action with the Indians near Lake George he noticed a large stump, through a hole in which shots were being fired. He supposed the person behind the stump would na- turally wish to know the result of his shot, so after a short interval after a shot he aimed his musket at the hole and discharged it and a huge savage leaped into the air and fell dead. The Indians soon retreated and as Mr. Chase passed the stump he snatched a large wooden hominey spoon which hung to the Indian's side. The spoon was carried home and is preserved as a family relic It is now in possession of Dr. Leonard Chase of Springfield, Vt it is a curious specimen of savage workmanship having the figure of an Indian carved on the handle with a projection as a pedestal. He was in a sitting posture and holding to his mouth a water bottle The Gen. Assembly of N. H. 25 Jan. 1772, granted to Jona- than Chase, Beech Island in Conn. river between Cornish and Windsor.
