Just to be sure that everyone understands what the mitochondrial dna (mtDNA) is all about, it should be understood that this is strictly a MATERNAL line test. MtDNA is passed down from the mother to both male and female children. The female child will in turn pass it on to her offspring. Its use, therefore, is to trace MATERNAL lineage (mother, maternal grandmother, maternal g grandmother, etc.) Two individuals with a common maternal ancestor line will have identical mtDNA. One feature of mtDNA is that it does not tend mutate from generation to generation with the frequency that male Y-chromosome DNA does, so you can reliably trace common maternal ancestry lines much further back than male ones. The bottom line is that mtDNA cannot verify a male lineage (such as a CHASE line) except as it might be useful to compare DNA of individuals who believe that they share a common mother (and, if appropriate, maternal grandmother, etc.) Dick Chase -----Original Message----- From: chase-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:chase-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of ChaseDNAteam@aol.com Sent: Friday, August 25, 2006 10:28 AM To: chase@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CHASE] DNA test In a message dated 8/25/2006 9:23:43 A.M. Kathy Caslin Kathy, if you mean how do I sign up for the test, I can assist you. I can order the test from Family Tree DNA. They will send you a test kit along with the invoice. You can either pay by check or write a note on the invoice to charge your credit card. If you do it the second way--mention your card number and sign the note. If you want me to order the test, I will need your full name, address, and phone number.
