    1. [CHASE-L] CHASE BIOS
    2. James E. Tanner
    3. Dear Fellow Chase researchers: I have a set of books, "Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Biography", printed 1888, edited by James Grant Wilson and John Fiske. I am listing all the Chases that are in the books with their dates and places of birth and death if they weren't alive when the books were published. If you want the entire article for any or all of them, let me know and I will send it to you. These are brief but comprehensive biographies and there is virtually no family info for them unless their close kin was also in the book. Still, if you are related to them (or just curious), this would make a nice addition to their notes. I already have them transcribed so all I have to do is copy and paste to an e-mail with one exception; Salmon P. Chase. If someone REALLY wants his info, I will type it out and send it to you. I have included everything concerning his family with his name and vitals below. Everything else is biographical. His is the only one with this kind of genealogical info. It's too bad the publishers of these books didn't provide at least some info on marriages and other family ties. I guess with over 6000 pages in 6 volumes, they were concerned about space. I believe the info provided to be fairly accurate; after all, it was printed 110 years ago when many of these people were still alive. Let me know what you want. Send requests to jtdtjtdt@concentric.net so as not to clog up the Chase list. If anyone can help me find the ancestors of my gg g'parents, Darling/Darlin/Darwin Chase b. about 1805 in NC and his 2nd wife, Anne Brooks, no further info, I would really appreciate it. Thank you. Jim Tanner Chase, Ann, patriot, b. Ireland 1809, d. Brooklyn, L. I., Dec. 24 1874. Wife of Franklin Chase, U. S. consul at Tampico, Mexico. Maiden name unknown. Benjamin Chase, clergyman, b. He was named for his uncle, Salmon, who died in Portland, and he used to say that he was his uncle’s monument. He was a descendant in the ninth generation of Thomas Chase, of Chesham, England, and in the sixth of Aquila Chase, who came from England and settled in Newbury, MA, about 1640. Salmon Portland was the eighth of the eleven children of Ithamar Chase and his wife, Janette Halston, who was of Scottish blood. He was born in the house built by his grandfather, which still (1888) stands overlooking Connecticut river and in the afternoon shadow of Ascutney mountain. Of his father’s seven brothers, three were lawyers, Dudley becoming a U. S. senator; two were physicians; Philander (see above) became a bishop of the Protestant Episcopal church; and one, like his father was a farmer.
