http://www.projo.com/eastbayandmass/content/projo_20060615_wnturk15.2c0d36.html Pigs won't fly, so he's going to try turkeys Thomas Chace intends to raise 200,000 turkeys on his Touisset property, after the town rejected his plan to keep swine on the 26-acre site, but a town official says what Chase really wants is a subdivision. 01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, June 15, 2006 By KIA HALL HAYES Journal Staff Writer WARREN -- Thomas Chace wants to put up to 200,000 turkeys on his Touisset property, but Town Council President Frank Alfano smells a rat. "It seems like he's just trying to stir things up to get what he really wants," Alfano said, referring to Chace's intention to put 14 houses on his 26-acre parcel, a plan that the town Planning and Zoning boards have denied. Chace, of Chace Real Estate Co., initially asked the council for permission to raise 10,000 swine on the property, but withdrew his request after a heated discussion with the council Tuesday. Abandoning that plan, Chace and co-owners Joseph and Maria Silveira now hope to raise 100,000 to 200,000 turkeys in five 10,000-square-foot barns and more than 500,000 fish on the land. Chace said he had preferred raising swine because turkeys bring the possibility of the avian flu. "It's a concern of mine; that's why I thought the idea of pigs would be a whole lot better," he said, adding that pigs are less intrusive than turkeys. Chace said he would meet with state Department of Environmental Management officials to learn how to mitigate avian-flu concerns. He said that if he had known that there were ways to safely raise turkeys, he would never have tried to raise swine in the first place. "I didn't know I was going to be up there and be insulted by the head of the Town Council," he said. Town Planner Michelle Maher said the barn structures could require a zoning variance, and that Chace would need a zoning amendment to raise fish, which is not permitted in an R-40 zone. Town Solicitor Fausto Anguilla said Chace would need a special-use permit, at the very least. "If he submits an application, it's going to be dealt with fairly and accordingly," he said. Chace said he would be talking to the Planning Board and the Zoning Board to get the necessary approvals. In the meantime, the owners will file an appeal with Superior Court to get the town's ruling on the subdivision overturned. Chace said the turkey farm would cease once the subdivision was approved. "We're not trying to invade the neighborhood.... We are trying to keep a positive cash flow going on the property," he said. Alfano said Chace's plan was a ploy to scare the town into approving his subdivision. "To mention the avian flu is a terrible thing to do to the community," he said. Dr. Christopher Hannafin, the state public health veterinarian for the DEM, said raising 200,000 turkeys poses no more of a risk of avian flu than any other disease affecting birds. Raising 200,000 turkeys would make Chace's farm the largest poultry operation in the state, but as long as Chace screens his birds for diseases and keeps them housed to prevent contact with wild birds, the risk for any disease is relatively low. Hannafin says there is no state permit or license required if the birds are not imported or exported between other states. "Just as long as you're environmentally friendly, you can do it," he said. That's exactly the concern, said Fire Chief Alexander Galinelli, who has been developing an avian-flu preparedness plan with other town officials for several months. If the largest poultry farm in the state isn't run responsibly, that could pose a major health concern, he said. "People would be very uncomfortable," Galinelli said. khayesATprojo.com/ (401) 277-7469 Jeffrey Chace http://www.chace.demon.nl

Wednesday, June 7, 2006 Neighbor says threat of pigs in Touisset is hogwash WARREN - Touisset resident Ernest Mayo is annoyed and irritated with developer Thomas Chace's threats. Longtime resident of Warren and a developer himself, Mr. Mayo believes Mr. Chace is not making a good case for himself. "All he's doing is hurting his cause," said Mr. Mayo. "It's another form of blackmail." Mr. Mayo is referring to the Massachusetts-based developer who has some interesting plans for 26 acres in Touisset. According to Mr. Chace, the Warren Planning Board denied his plans for a 14-home subdivision called Touisset Bay and now he has decided to fill the land with a pig farm, 10,000 swine strong. He said he's negotiating with potential pig farmers who will work the land. He will ask the town council for permission at the June 13 meeting. If Mr. Chace was to put 10,000 swine onto the property, Mr. Mayo said it would easily reduce the property value of all nearby homes by around 40 percent. "His philosophy is different than the philosophy of the Town of Warren," Mr. Mayo said. "In my opinion Mr. Chace is not being realistic. It's dumb, and I'll tell him to his face." Mr. Mayo has developed Mayo Drive, Matthew Drive, and some other property in Warren. He said he's looked at the Touisset Bay property "it's practically his back yard" and believes cluster homes is not the answer for the land. "He's [Mr. Chace] trying to fit more than the property can hold," said Mr. Mayo. "The land tells you what you can carry. "It's an R-40 (zone) you should stay with R-40 requirements. If you can put 14 in R-40 then stick to 14, but if you can only put eight, then stick to eight." Mr. Mayo said the property has major water drainage problems and they need to be addressed before any development goes in. He says if there is a bad storm it will flood a nearby pond and he'll "have fish in front of his house." The Touisset Bay property is located in an R-40 zone which has certain requirements the zoning laws in town state that all farm animals except for hogs can be raised on R-40 land. What will the council do? On June 13, the Warren Town Council will take into consideration Mr. Chace's petition for 10,000 pigs on the property. Council member Joseph DePasquale said he is not sure what the council's action will be, but he will keep the current health and well being of Warren residents in mind. "With the inclination I have now," he said, "I would not be in favor of changing any current order for any potential plans that I've read in the paper." That's good news to some Touisset residents, including James Nightingale. "I don't expect the town would go along with putting a pig farm out here," Mr. Nightingale said recently. "It's an election year." Fellow resident Peter Shaw agreed. "I just think (Mr. Chace is) bringing it up because he's mad at the neighborhood," he said. "People would come out of the woodwork to stop it." Mr. Mayo believes the town council will make the right decision. He said, "We have a very stable town council, they don't shoot from the hip very easily." BY KELLY HAYES khayes@eastbaynewspapers.com Jeffrey Chace http://www.chace.demon.nl
I believe that this relative of mine arrived at Ellis Island on Oct 4th 1894 aged 20. Does anyone have information on Joseph after his arrival in the States. Ruth Chase after a sunny day (at last) in Somerset, England.
Does anyone have any information about Lettice Chase who married Lemuel Millett of Nova Scotia about 1891? She may have been from New England. Lemuel was b. 19 Apr 1862 d. 6 Mar 1929. He is buried in new Baptist Cemetery, Chester, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. Lemuel's sister Lucinda m. a Charles Payne of Worcester, Massachusetts in 1884 and she died in Dec. 1890. Perhaps Lemuel came down to Mass. --as many N.S. familes did - mostly looking for work. In 1880 census of Athol, MA shows Lettie Chase, 19 working in a shoe shop and maybe living in a boarding house. Could this be Lettice?? Linda Chase Alberta, Canada
Are you looking in Maine for information? Try some of these resources. Maine Old Cemetery Association [MOCA] it can be found at: http://rootsweb.com/~memoca/moca.htm When looking for "lost" ancestors check the towns and cemeteries where their children lived or where the spouse was born and brought up. They may have been living with him and buried in that town or a nearby town. Remember many counties lines changed over time. A great New England towns resource is the "Genealogy Handbook for New England Research" by Marcia D. Melnyk. It can be purchased through the New England Historic Genealogical Society [NEHGS] in Boston . Their website is: WWW.NewEnglandAncestors.org The Maine State Archives has an extensive collection from the entire state on town histories. I wonder what her maiden name is? Knowing Fall River, it is probably Earle, or Slade, or Buffinton. Cheers, Jeffrey Chace http://www.chace.demon.nl One spectacular century Deborah Allard, Herald News Staff Reporter 05/24/2006 FALL RIVER -- Call it genetics or call it luck, because Mae Chace doesnt have any explanation for living through an entire century. "I dont feel like anything. I feel young," said Chace at her 100th birthday party at the North End Senior Center Tuesday. It was quite an occasion. Chace was presented with a gigantic birthday cake to share with all her friends at the center, who in turn gave her a special, crocheted money tree. Then, it was a dinner of franks and beans -- her favorite -- and a round of Bingo. Chace plays Bingo at the center three days a week, and on Sunday nights at the Ponta Delgada Club. A Somerset resident for the past 92 years, she spent many years working in local sewing shops. Chace still lives on her own at Kennedy Terrace, an elder housing complex. She moved there at age 92, the same year she stopped driving her car. She does her own grocery shopping, though she gets a ride to the store now with her daughter. She takes no medications, save for a fluid pill and vitamins, and is on no special diet. "She eats anything she wants. She has a glass of wine once in a while," said her daughter, June Truver, 70. Chace said it was hard to believe her daughter, a retired bookkeeper, was 70 years old. "Shes catching up to me," she said. Chace has another daughter who is 68, and 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her husband, Gordon, died at age 69. They were married for 39 years. Truver said longevity does not run in her family, and her mother has never been a health nut, though shes never been a drinker or smoker either. She was diagnosed with cancer 50 years ago, which resulted in the loss of one of her breasts. At the senior center, Chace had smiles for everyone on her birthday. Mayor Edward M. Lambert Jr. was there to wish her a happy birthday and read a proclamation. "Look at her. God bless her," said Lambert. "We all want to know your secret." Chace had no problem blowing out her candles. She stood up from her seat to say: "I want to thank you all. Youre all good to me." E-mail Deborah Allard at dallard@heraldnews.com. Thinking thee might be interested in so doing. Benjamin Chace and Rhoda Upton were married 1770. Benjamin Chace and Sarah Cornell were married 1777. Elijah Cornell and Sarah Miller were married 12th mo 4th 1769. Benjamin Miller was born 1707* (*The wife of Benjamin Miller was named Mahetable). Hello All, I just ran across this very interesting letter and thought I would share it with you. As with the Legend of the Chase Family Fortune of England, it appears that these scams were being committed on other families as well, including the Cornells. It seems interesting to me how this same kind of legend is still perpetrated today in the form of internet hoaxes from Nigeria concerning millions of dollars that need to be smuggled out of Africa. Does anyone know anything of Nacissa, Artemas Cornell, or E.R. Cornell mentioned in the letter? Cheers, Jeffrey Chace http://www.chace.demon.nl Alexandria O April 5, 1868 My dear Cousin Narcissa, I received a letter from you dated March 18, which came duly to hand. We were sory [sic] to hear that you had been very ill, which was news to us, but we are gratified to learn that you are so much better now. I have been unwell for several days, but feel better now, the rest are well. You mentioned in your letter about that great fortune in contemplation said to come from England and to descend from a certain Cornell that married an only daughter against the wishes of her Father, who is said to have made a will and willed his property to the heirs of the third generation from said Stephen Cornell. The property is said to be where the City of Leeds stands, the land is rented and the proceeds placed from said lease in Bank, the real estate and money is said to be worth from sixty to seventy millions of dollars, perhaps more so the story goes. It is said the notice was published in the N.Y. Day Book, so I have been told. The genealogy of the Cornell family, have been traced back to Stephen Cornell of Swanzey Mass. I have just received a letter from Cousin Artemas Cornell stating taht the Estates Registry in London had been searched and that a large amount of property was found to belong to the descendants of a Cornell Family. Without giving the given name. I have writen [sic] a letter to the Editors of the N.Y. Day Book wishing them to send the Notice of that property and I would pay them well for trouble &c. Whether there is any money that we shall fall heir to or not, I am not able to say. I think there is a pretty good prospect of receiving something. Ezra Cornell of Ithaca N.Y. claims to be a second cousin of my fathers. I have receiv'd several letters from him. With his photograph. He has made a very great donation to the Agricultural College of N.Y. to the amount of about one million of dollars. It is called the Cornell University. I must come to close – Give my love to Emma and Mr. Peters, from your affection [sic] Cousin. E.R. Cornell

Chase, insurance agent from USA, living in Nova Scotia in 1871 No, W.F. or Wallace Fairbanks could not have been that old. My guess would be, maybe he was born in late 1870's, early 1800's. Wallace F. Chase married my step grandmother in November of 1948, at the Odd Fellows Hall in St. Louis, Mo. Since both were in their seventies, the application for license to marry and the marriage certificate did not show any birth dates or ages of the couple. However, there were two witnesses who signed their names on the bottom of the marriage certificate. One was, Charles F. Chase and the other, William E.B. Chase, who may have been his sons. I did find a 1920 census, taken in Wayne Michigan which shows , Wallace F. Chase b/abt. 1980, in Maine, Margaret, (wife), b/1881 Nova Scotia, both parents born Nova Scotia with two sons, William b/1904 Massachusetts, and Charles b/1908 Organ. Margaret may have been his first wife. This may be the family, and correct W.F.Chase I am looking for, but have no way to prove my find. My step-grandmother was Mamie E. (Powers) (Smith) Chase. The couple had only been married several years when Mamie returned to her home town and told everyone Wallace had passed away. No one in the family has ever been able to know for sure if Wallace passed away or they were separated. I have never been able to find anything on Wallace (no death notice, or death certificate), nothing since receiving the marriage license and certificate. It was all very mysterious and Mamie wasn't talking. Mamie died in Maryland 1960. Wallace had to have had family somewhere. I do have photographs of Wallace, also a photo of Wallace with two women and a young man. These could have been his family, but there are no names or dates on the photo's. Any breakthrough on Wallace would be so greatly appreciated. Chase, No. 159 Hollis Street, opposite Club House, Halifax, has now in use at his Gallery the latest and most approved Solar Camera in the city of Halifax for enlarging all styles of small pictures. Those having Daguerrotypes, Ambrotypes, and Photographs of their deceased friends and relatives can have them enlarged up to life size, and furnished at a lower price than at any other gallery. Mr. C.'s experience in Photography enables him to give the public a more artistic style of work than can be obtained elsewhere in the city. Because of the following, reference, I assume W. Chase was Wellington Chase. He may be connected to W. F. Chase or H. N. Chase who were also living in Halifaz at the time. To: Tora Brown (Chace) As concerns any Chase/Chace living in New Brunswick about 1830-1840...you might want to look up the family of James P. Chase (George Bedford4 Walter3 Benjamin2,William1) The are all part of my family as James was a brother of my great -great,great. great .grandfather Greenfield Chace.. As my research has shown before..James was a Tory and did not want to be in the Revolution and went to News Brunswick and married Betty Douglas on 15 Jan 1766..they had 12 children.. they kept the spelling of their name as Chase My relative Greenfield..all born as Chases..Changed their name to Chace after the Revolution..and this is the spelling on the graves in Freetown.. I think Jeffries Chase is connected to James.. Col Chace Col Chace

The Evening Bee Sacramento, Cal. Monday, February 5, 1906 FUNERAL OF PIONEER WOODLAND (Yolo Co.), February 5 - Samuel U. CHASE, an old resident of this county, died at his home in Capay Valley Friday night. Deceased was a native of New York, 89 years of age. Mr. Chase started for the West in 1843, and first settled in Oregon. In the party with which he started was Peter H. BURNETT, first Governor of California. In 1845 Mr. Chase came to California. He afterward made several trips between this State and Oregon, finally settling in this county in 1886, where he resided until his death. Mr. Chase never married. The funeral was held yesterday from his late residence.
I would highly recommend to you all a relatively new book published just this year: "The Widow's War" by Sally Gunning. Although the name Chase is not mentioned, and the book is set at Point of Rocks, Brewster, Satucket Village, the heroine of the story is one Lyddie Berry - and of course, the Chases married into the Berry family and vice versa. "In a small Cape Cod village in 1761, one woman is about to engage in the struggle of her life, defying her friends, and neighbors in a fight for her freedom that resonates even today......[ 39 year old] Lyddie has long [ 20 years] been the wife of Edward Berry, a well-liked and successful whaler....But when the unthinkable does happen and Lyddie finds that she must bear not only the grief of losing her husband, but also the insult of losing her autonomy. As a widow, she finds herself cast into society's cellar, her property and her rights now at the whim of her nearest male relative." This is the way to make learning history exciting and personal as one really learns about the customs and mores of the times and what dower rights really mean. I bought an autographed copy of the book in Chatham, MA in early April - and saw it just last week in my local Barnes and Noble bookstore in Los Angeles. Also, another interesting book just released and reviewed in today's NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/04/books/04masl.html?_r=1&oref=slogin ): MAYFLOWER A Story of Courage, Community and War By Nathaniel Philbrick Illustrated. 461 pages. Viking. $29.95. As many of you may remember, Nathaniel Philbrick wrote the wonderful book "In the Heart of the Sea" about Owen Chase and the loss of the whaleship Essex, upon which tale Herman Melville based his book "Moby Dick". I haven't read this book as it has just been released - but I certainly plan to! Judy Chace Needham
Ruth asked: <<<<<Does anyone out there know if the cemetery where Wm. & Mary Chace is buried, is where anyone can see it ?>>> As Jeffrey has said, there is no indication or the exact spot where the immigrant William Chase and his wife Mary are buried on Cape Cod. I believe the oldest known grave of a William Chase descendant is that of his great-grandson, Thomas who was the son of John, son of William Junior. Thomas (d. 11/20/1767, aged 88) is buried in the Ancient Cemetery of Dennis. However, in the West Harwich Baptist Church Cemetery on Route 28 and Depot Street, Harwich, there is a striking black marble memorial to William the Immigrant. William is not buried there, but this is a descendant's tribute to the Founding Father of our line in America. There are several other Chases buried there, also. A good site to reference is http://www/capecodgravestones.com - and then click on Cape Cod Cemetery Lists - Mid Cape (Yarmouth, Dennis, Brewster, Harwich, Chatham) - where you will find listings of many of the gravesites of those Chases who remained on Cape - primarily of course, those descendants of William, Jr. and his son John's progeny: William, Thomas and Jeremiah. If you do have a chance to, you should by all means visit Cape Cod, just to get the feeling of where our ancestors first lived (after William came from Roxbury to settle on Cape Cod). Hello to All, Does anyone out there know if the cemetery where Wm. & Mary Chace is buried, is where anyone can see it ? I am "thinking" of trying to get to Mass. and maybe get some pictures of the cemetery and any other Chace places around that area, for my scrapbook. If there is nothing to see, maybe I won't try the trip. I just would like to know if anyone has been out there and maybe has seen the area. I'd sure appreciate any thoughts on the area.
