Wow, Keith, we are more closely related than shirt-tails, huh? Let me get into my database and see what I have on the Simmons. I don't believe that I knew they were from Leiden. I'm interested in augmenting what little I do have on them, fleshing out their history instead of just dates and places. I've had more trouble with Ebenezer and found quite a little bit of information on Sarah Snow. Leonard Chase who married Jane Dell...now that was a trick for a while, and then Elias who married Mary Ann Chase, and I have copies of her brother's letters to his family while he was serving in the civil war. They were copied and given to me by Millard Arnold another Chase descendant. The further back I've gone, the sketchier the information I've found so far. Any assistance or additional information is very much appreciated. I'm happy to share anything that you would like. The Chase/Chace Surname Resource website has my old e-mail address. It is now: Evelyn Huff at huff@willapabay.org. Also, my lineage goes back from Lucy Wilson (who is shown) to her father Elias Wilson who married Mary Ann Chase, daughter of Leonard Chase, son of Ebenezer Chase, son of Walter, Jr., son of Walter, son of Benjamin, who was the son of William the immigrant. Thank's for updating. And I tried to e-mail Keith directly but it bounced back.
I'm also pursuing an Ira Chase, not (apparently) the one who was governor of Indiana, but Ira G W Chase, who fought in the Civil War and who was a Methodist? minister. My Ira was born 17 Nov 1827 in Cattaragus Co NY at Little Valley, and died Dec 1893 at Hurley, Turner Co. SD. He had moved from NY to IL to Iowa by 1870 census. (That doesn't leave much room for him to become the Indiana governor, alas.) My Ira married Sylvia Catherine Goodwin (1828-1883) in Winnebago Co. IL in 1838. I show Ira & Sylvia credited with 7 children: Theodore Henry, George L, Willard Wellman, Sherman Grant, Howard A, Mary E, and Ira A. Ira A (1867-1928) seems to have lived his time in Iowa. Ira Sr. had a brother named Hiram V Chase (born 5 March 1826 NY) who died in the Civil War, at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Hiram was married to Amanda XXX, and I show a child for them named Frederick Chase. However, in the 1860 census I found two fellows named Hiram Chase in Cataragus County, and the second fellow is one year younger, so it is possible I picked up the wrong Hiram. Ira and Hiram had an older sister named Elza (1824-1830 NY) who died young, and a younger sister named Lucy M Chase who married a George W Taylor in Whiteside County, IL. Anyway, this Ira and Hiram et al. are children of Jacob Ransom Chase (1794 VT-1862 MN) and his middle wife, Rachel Fuller (1810NY-1884 Nebr). Jacob had other children from his first and third wives. I'm still looking for a record of a divorce between Rachel and Jacob, because I show her as the wife of Jesse D Slawson in Whiteside County, IL after Jacob R Chase married again. But Rachel & Jesse had 8 or 9 more children after the Chase ones, but Lucy Chase lived with them in Whiteside Co. Anyway, I live in hope that I'll discover some descendants of Hiram & Ira & Lucy etc. Anybody claim this Ira Chase? Jan T

Hello Can anyone confirm the following information: >From "Biographical Record of Bartholomew County, Indiana, Including Biographies of the Governors and Other Representative Citizens of Indiana"; 1904; B. F. Bowen, publisher, pages 44-45, Governor Ira J. CHASE's sketch says, in part, that he was born 7 Dec 1834 in Clarkson, Monroe County, New Jersey (actually it was New York), father was Benjamin but mother not mentioned. Ira's wife was Rhoda J. CASTLE of Cook County, IL. Is this the same person? He was Indiana governor from 1891-1893, nearly 14 months. According to another GEDCOM here, Ira J. CHASE was a son of Benjamion CHASE (born 1807) who in turn was a son of this Benjamin CHASE born 1774 RI. son of Rufus Chase and Sarah Kingsley Thanks for any help that you can give. The above was from an email that I received. Barry

You Might want to have a serious discussion with one or both or your parents (providing they are still with us). Sounds like there's something that might need to discuss with you,
I have managed to add a searc engine on the site (URL below) It only searches the first 250 pages but that is a large proportion of the site. While on the subject of CHASE/CHACE web sites my links to them are very old and I see I have not got Jeffrey Chase's.( I am still having trouble contacting you ,Jeffrey!). Dick Chase - I do have the Chase/Chamberlain book, have been researching for 10-12 years, and do find errors in it, so I still seek to have resources. Most of us who research the Lt. Nathaniel line have also found his marriage to Rachel Pierce (whose parents I've not been able to find, but the facts on his second wife (and some say he had a third) are more elusive. But, thanks for your interest. In my previous message, the line should read: they didn't include facts for which they had NOT seen reasonable proof. Dick
According to Chase/Chamberlain's Seven Generations... Nathaniel married (2nd marriage) Naomi Kelley about 1784. She died 18 May 1833, aged 66. They list 5 children by his first wife (Rachael Pierce, who died 21 Oct 1784), and 10, plus "three other children who died young" by his second wife. Chase/Chamberlain don't sight sources for their entries, but they didn't include facts for which they had seen reasonable proof. They also state that Nathaniel was a Lt. in the Revolutionary war. Hi Ginger, Thanks for your e-mail re Nathaniel Chase and the "Lt" appellation! I like my thought that he was a likable man best, but that's the romance of genealogy for me. Do you have any idea where I might find a record of his militia service after the war? He tended to move around a lot, and is difficult to track. No accurate records of his sometimes quoted three marriages exists (after about 10 years of research). Chase and Chamberlain record two, but most of us researching his life have failed to find the second one. So the fine points of his life elude us. I did actually find a land record for him last year in Vermont, bu the kept the land only a few months. That also is a bit of a mystery. There are so many Nathaniel Chases. Perhaps we will never know the truth of this man. He had about 18 children, and looking for records of all of them could take a lifetime, considering the time in which they were born.\ Joyce Chase Jarvis\ Ashland, Oregon ----- Original Message ----- From: <DeGregoryG@aol.com> To: <chase@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 26, 2006 2:32 PM Subject: Re: [CHASE] Nathaniel Chase > Joyce: > > He may have been a LT. in the Militia after the war in the town where he > lived. > > Ginger > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > CHASE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes > in the subject and the body of the message
There are extracts from this book on the web site below. Click on the "Coat of Arms" item and follow the link "Heralds Collections and Libraries". Then following copies of the letters received from the College you will see the link to Noble's book amongst a list with "The Seven Generations......." book and also a little know extract from the Mayo and Elton families . This has more information. I believe the entire book by Noble is on line somewhere, Keith Hume ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Chase" <chase@btopenworld.com> To: <chase@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 05, 2006 7:38 AM Subject: Re: [CHASE] Inquiry > There is also a book by Arthur Noble called "The Chase Family" published > in > 1967. > > I have a copy. > > -----Original Message----- > From: chase-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:chase-bounces@rootsweb.com] On > Behalf Of Keith Hume > Sent: 04 September 2006 23:30 > To: chase@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [CHASE] Inquiry > > Hi,Bob, > I came across this Chase Branch some years ago. I took advantage of the Origins Network offer of free access to their data search their computerized Boyd's Inhabitants of London database to see if it might perchance contain any information on Aquila, and, mirabile dictu, it does in fact contain a page (sheet #8084) on Aquila (the indexer, obviously not s student of the Bible, mis-entered the name a "Aguila") Chase, a resident of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in London. The record states him to be the son of Richard Chase (of Chesham), and that he married Martha Jelliman, daughter of John and Margery Jelliman, on 22 June 1606 in that Parish. It notes that he was a citizen, a tailor and member of the Draper Guild, and had become a Freeman in 1605. (A freeholder had certain rights to land unlike the earlier serfs. A freeholder could usually pass on his land to his sons and sometimes could sell his rights to the land. This higher social status often included the right to vote in local and Parliamentary elections. "Freeman" was a more general term, including both freeholders and non-farmers like merchants and craftsmen.) The significance of this record in Boyd's is that is confirms the assumption that Chase/Chamberlain make in their Seven Generations. genealogy that the London Aquila was probably the Chesham Aquila, son of Richard, that is documented in records in Buckinghamshire. The Boyd's record also lists three children of Aquila and Martha: Anne, bpt. 26 Feb 1607, and buried 19 Jul 1609; Martha buried 11 Mar 1610, and Aquila. While there is no birth, baptism or burial date shown for the latter, it does note that he was a member of the Draper Guild, and was made a Freeman in October 1649. [London Parish records show that Aquila and Martha had several other children-but none of them named Thomas. They also record that the elder Aquila was buried in St. Nicholas, Cole Abbey, Parish in London 9 Feb 1643, and that the younger Aquila was buried there in 1659/60.] So, for those who might still entertain the hope that the younger Aquila is one and the same as the Aquila who shows up in Hampton, Mass. Bay Colony, and is the link to that Chase line back to the Chesham Chases, all this would seem to further confirm that that "just ain't so", and his ancestry continues to be a mystery. Dick Chase
Really sorry - should have dug a little deeper first. I've found her family in the 1850/1860 census, just a few miles from where her future husband is in 1860. Definitely her (tough, because only her intials E. J. are in the 1850 census). Parents were George B. CHASE, b: ca: 1813 in NY, and Ruth (__), b: 1810 in NY. Help with them???
