Thankful Berry is mentioned several times, and I believe all the references are of the same person. It's a bit complex, with intermarriages, but I'll give you what I have and try to sort it out here. Thankful Berry of Harwich first married John Chase (b. at Yarmouth 23 Oct. 1706 to John and Sarah (Hills) Chase). The intention was recorded at Harwich on 12 Jan. 1732/33. He died suddenly on 1 Feb. 1733/34 as a result of a fall from his horse. Ten days later, on 11 Feb. 1733/34, Thankful gave birth at Yarmouth to their child, Mercy, (Mercy later married a William Chase, her first cousin once removed). According to this article, Thankful is mentioned in a publication called "The Mayflower Descendent", vol. 13, p. 147. Thankful remarried, on 21 January 1734/35, the Rev. Richard Chase, (b. at Yarmouth 3 Mar. 1714/15 to Thomas and Sarah (Gowell) Chase) who was her first husband's first cousin. Rev. Chase was pastor of the Baptist Church at West Harwich, beginning 19 Sept. 1757 and serving until 31 March 1777. They had 10 children - John, Samuel, Archelus, Berry, Richard, Rebecca, Thankful, Huldah, Abigail, and Phebe. Rev. Chase died at Dennis 14 Jan. 1794. Thankful died 15 March 1807, in her 94th year. No date of birth for Thankful is mentioned, though from the last sentence we can infer it was around 1713. Unfortunately, her parents are not mentioned, either. At least I think this clears up the issue of who her husband was - both of the men you mentioned were. Good luck! John

    3. Hello cousins, I am requesting someone with either New England Historical Society or Mayflower verified references to help with a Chase cousin debate. The question concerns who Thankful Berry b. abt 8 Jan 1715/16 Harwich married? A spelling variant of the name is Berey another birth date is 25 May 1716 Harwich. From a death - gravestone - 1723 Some records say: John Chase b. abt 1713 Yarmouth or Rev Richard Chase b. 03 Mar 1713/14/15 Yarmouth. Is there more than one Thankful Berry of Harwich of this time frame? Who is her father and mother? Thanks Rick

    3. My father's line traces back to the Chases and my records show two Thankful Berrys. One was married to Richard Chase with a son Archelus born 5/17/1807. Information came from WFT Vol 1 tree no. 949. The other married a John Chase, born 4/16/1675, the son of John Chase and Elizabeth Baker. John's brothers, William, Thomas, Captain Jonathan, Jeremiah, and Isaac. Thankful, born 1671-1691, was listed as a Mayflower descendant in 'The Mayflower' Vol 13 page 147. I have no information on her parents. I found information on her from WFT Vol 4 tree no. 651. Hope this helps in your research Holly Snead Snead@bellsouth.net

    3. I have been searching for almost ten years for the parents or siblings of Joseph Johnson CHASE, aka Johnson J. CHASE, who was born December 26, 1819 in either Greene County or Delaware County, NY. (He gave both in two different censuses). He and his wife are buried in Hannibal, Oswego County, NY. He died January 1, 1871 in Oswego County, NY. Married Abigail Havens, b. 1819 in Cayuga County, NY. Children: Henry, Orin, Mary L., Charles B., Arthur and Sarah Elizabeth, all b. in NY. All lines have been searched down to living descendants. No luck. There is a father and son team by the name of Joseph Johnson Chase, living in the Cayuga County, NY., and they are well researched. Mine may be related but no evidence to substantiate it. Local newspapers carrying his obit are not available for 1870 and 1871 (just my luck!). Any help, suggestions, etc would be appreciated.

    1. [CHASE-L] $150.00 REWARD for CHASE info
    2. Dr. Gerald I. Metalsky and Rebecca S. Laird
    3. I have an elderly family member in failing health who has been following my family research with great interest over the years. He wants so much to learn about the family of his great-grandfather William H. CHASE, a Civil War hero, who he knew as a boy. Sadly, his time is getting short and this family member has been the biggest brick wall in my work. Thus the rest of us in his family have decided to take this unorthodox approach to offer a $150.00 reward to anyone who might be able to give us the information leading to our ancestor's family. Please check your files and any old notes you may have! We would be so grateful. WHAT WE KNOW: WILLIAM H. CHASE b. August 1814 in Austerlitz (then Hillsdale), Columbia County, NY. Father's b.p.: MA. Mother's b.p.: NY. Source: 1900 federal census. WHO ARE HIS PARENTS? William Chase m. CORNELIA JANE GARDENIER (b. 1815 in Kinderhook; d.o. Peter GARDENIER and Sarah DEYO) m. in 1834 in Stuyvesant Falls, Columbia County, NY by Reverend Sturges. Source: "Rural Repository" newspaper. Their Children: John (b. abt 1834, m. Mary REILLY, d. Civil War), Sarah (d. young), William Harrison (b. 1838, my 3great-g.), and Abraham (b. 1842, d. Civil War). WILLIAM and CORNELIA CHASE are found on the federal censuses in Stuyvesant and Kinderhook, NY in 1840, 1850 and 1860. His occupation was a weaver. In 1870 they are found living in Pittsfield, MA along with their son William Chase Jr., a cigar manufacturer, and his family. In 1880 WILLIAM and CORNELIA CHASE returned to live in Kinderhook, NY, then moved to Springfield MA until CORNELIA died in 1888. WILLIAM CHASE and his son moved to Canton, OH in 1890, then settled in Milwaukee, WI, where William died in 1902. WHAT WE'VE ALREADY LOOKED AT: Besides the federal and state censuses for NY, OH and WI, we have checked hundreds of church, cemetery, newspaper, military, probate, land and town vital records in towns throughout Columbia County, NY and several surrounding counties in NY, MA and CT. My aunt and I have each made a trip from Wisconsin to NY to do local research. However, we have not found our William Chase's family. Can anyone help us? Thank you so much, Rebecca metalskg@ix.netcom.com
