Is there anyone who has access to records for any of the cemeteries in Stuyvesant, Columbia County, NY? I am looking for a record of JOSEPH CHASE or CHACE. He lived in Stuyvesant in 1830 and 1840. I will gladly pay someone for their time and trouble,or swap info I have courtesy our local FHC--extensive WISCONSIN info,EMMIGRATION records, GERMAN and SCOTTISH and many other records, NY... Thank you so much! Rebecca
Please contact all of us if you know where the commemorative stone is. I know it was created by John Carroll Chase, and I had looked forward to seeing it sometime. Please help!
Hi,Everyone, I am fairly new to this Group and this is my first posting t so please excuse me if I go over old ground. I have a reference to William CHASE, born 15 June 1621 at Rogate,Sussex,England. Two sources are given 1)NEHGR V87: 258, Dr. John B. CHACE 2) CHASE,Gladys,Marie "William Chase of Yarmouth" 1995 I have checked the Parish Register for Rogate and there is no reference to a Chase 5 years either side of that date. I also checked for the period around 1600 in search of his father without a positive result. I do realise that as non-conformists William's parents may not have had him baptised in the Church of England but the West Sussex Records Office has no knowledge of a non conformist organisation in the area. I also am aware that there was a "pocket" of CHASE families in the Sussex area To cast further doubt on this information William's parents are shown as William Chase and Mary TOWNLEY and I have some doubt as to whether this "link" was made at the time when every "Chase" family member was trying to establish blood lines to the TOWNLEYs Is there anyone in the Group who could possibly check the 2 sources given above to see if there is any further information? Resending message which I previously composed a few days ago in response to Liz; have just learned from Lonnie how to post to the list correctly. Hope you all get this. Lonnie, this newcomer's mentor (!), please let me know if you get this ASAP so I can relax about this!
I have just read all the information you sent on the family homesite and family of 'Old' Thomas Chase, and was excited to learn so much about that side of my family. My father's line goes back to the Chases. His 4th great grandfather married Rebecca Chase, daughter of Nathan Chase, 5th great grandson of 'Old' Thomas Chase, and it is really interesting to find out so much about your history. I have a possible last name for Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Chase. I don't have the source for it, but was told her name was Elizabeth Bowchiew. If you have anything to validate this I would appreciate hearing from you. I also have Thomas's parents as Matthew Chase and Elizabeth Bould, his grandparents as John Chase and Alice Harding, and his great grandfather as Thomas Chase. Again I can't document this so if you can give me some validation that this is correct or not please let me know. As your correspondence noted, the Chase name could be traced back to the time of William the Conquerer. I was wondering if anyone has any information on the line at that time period, and whether it can be validated. Any information on this line would be gratefully appreciated. Holly M. Please read my query to the New England Historical Genealogical Society and subsequent reply, below. If anyone reading this is in possession of this stone, please contact me at the address below. It was in our possession at one time, but because of its size and load-bearing our building couldn't accommodate it and according to Scott Barltey in our Fine Arts Department, it was evidently given to another Chase descendant in 1988 or 1989. I'm sorry that we're unable to locate the piece for you. If you have any other questions, please feel free to call on me. Sincerely Linda Skinner Austin
I am the last (female) in a line of Chases directly descended on paternal side from Aquila. I just found this listserve but have been commuicating since last year with Hoisingtons (married name) on similar listserve. I will be running my list of Chases to start adding to, and sharing, info on our trees ( I use Family Tree Maker). My family are all Vermonters (5 generations) and Massachusetts/Great Bay Colony Pilgrims. Related names are Hebb, Jackman, Sallies, Smith, Abbott/Abbot, Eastman, Bowles, Miller. I got quite a laught out of a story appearing in THE CHASE CHRONICLE in which J. Montgomery Seaver, President of the American Historical-Genealogical Society faces a fraud order by the superintendent of mails, Washington DC Apparently he'd been taking pages from the phone book, writing to the people (a mass mailing ! gasp!) and selling genealogies purporting to go back to William the Conquerer !!!! (Vol 20 Jan - Apr 1930 p-31) Sounds familiar doesn't it ??? or better yet "An oldie but a goodie !" Derek Chase

Hello from a new subscriber in New Zealand. I am interested in the name CHASE from the above district. Is anyone else? Cheers Betty bettyd@voyager.co.nz.
I am trying to track some Chaces/Chases who relocated to Indiana from NY at some point in the 1800's (between 1800-1830?). Can you give me a little more info on your Marcia Chace? Especially her husband's name, a b.d., b.p., children? I can check my notes then to see what I might have. In case you haven't seen it yet, the USGenWeb site for Indiana has a number of searchable databases for censuses, land and marriage records. I have found lots of Chases (search on both spellings!) in these databases, including some in Boone County. Thanks! Rebecca

Hi Chase researchers, I have been looking for Sarah Chase for several years now, without much luck. All I know is that she was born about 1788, married William Wingate, I think in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, before 1805, the year her first child was born. She moved to Boone County, KY about 1814 and died there in 1852. On the 1850 census, she gave her birthplace as Maryland. I can find no trace of her, or husband William Wingate, in Maryland. Would someone please give me some suggestions as to where to look? I will be going to my local (very small) FHC soon. Thanks, Suzanne Russell auntsue@twlakes.net
A little while back someone raised the issue of the veracity of the information that is presented in published CHASE geneaologies such as the 1933-1934 NEHGR articles "Some Descendants of William Chase of Roxbury and Yarmouth." I happened upon an informative article addressing the subject of reviewing and evaluating existing scholarship in the area of New England ancestors like the Chase family. The article is entitled "Details, Details, Details: Reviewing Existing Scholarship for Alcock Origins" by the eminent genealogist Patricia Law Hatchez, CG, in the September 1997 issue of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly (Vol. 88, No. 1). In this article she notes that the wealth of scholarship we sometimes find on our New England ancestors "is most likely to trip up 'lucky' New England genealogists. Those who find publications by eminent genealogists--replete with birth dates, names of spouses, mentions of sources, and erudite discussions--are not likely to believe that the author has missed something or erred...[and] see no need to compulsively track down the cited sources, study the originals themselves, look for confirming--and conflicting--evidence, and question every conclusion. Instead, they blithely continue 'collecting' ancestors, comfortable that they have cited a respected source. What is wrong with this approach? Many early conclusions were drawn by researchers in a time when citation standards and evaluation practices were less rigorous now. Furthermore, the records accessible in the past were only a small fraction of what is readily available to researchers today..." The author discusses and illustrates a research method that can be used in New England and other genealogical research. I found it well worth the read and thought I'd mention it to everyone. I find it especially helpful in trying to find the family of my CHASE ancestor, William H. Chase, who was born in Austerlitz, Columbia County NY in 1814, where there is a large CHASE family enumerated in "Some Descendants of William Chase..." who I suspect are related somehow to my William. In going over primary sources for this family, however, I am finding a number of serious potential errors in this work. Others who have written here about similar errors they've found in this and other published genealogies concerning their ancestors may find this a helpful read. Rebecca Laird

Hi Chases, Are any of you descended from Elisha abt 1728-1759, Ezekiel 1753-1813, Ashur 1793-1862, or Nathan 1852-1927? I have had no contact with anyone this side of Isaac, Elisha's father, and am wondering if I am the only one left in my line. Lonnie Chase maryetta@concentric.net
I am new to the list. I am actually researching the name CHACE, but I think I am about to the point where their names change from CHASE. My ggggrandmother was Martha Chace who married 24 Feb 1842 in Boone County IN. There were several others with the spelling CHACE in Boone County at that time. Hopefully they are related and someone could help me find the connection and discover her parents. Thank you, Patricia Hopkins jhopkins@cswnet.com

Hi Bill and all of you - I am a descendent of Thomas Chase who married Rebecca Follansbee. Tom is a brother of Moses who married Anne Follansbee. Moses and Anne were married on the 10 Nov 1684. Thomas and Rebecca were married 1 Nov 1677. It wouldn't surprise me if Rebecca and Anne were sisters. Unfortunately I have no info on the ancestry of either of the ladies. Will look forward to any input from Chase cousins out there. My line is direct male line from my father to Aquila and beyond. Line ended with my brothers. One had girls and the other had none.
