    1. [CHASE-L] Aquila Chase Book & Lineage
    2. Ted Mudge
    3. It's great to see the continued interest in the book, "The Descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase" published in 1928 by John Carroll Chase. Well researched & written, it is the primer for Chase research (IMHO). Page 9, in particular, should be required reading (IMHO) for anyone who is ancestor shopping at the CHASES-R-US store! Here it is: "The general claim has been made that the brothers, Aquila and Thomas Chase, were descendants of the Chesham family of Chases in England. Mr. George Begelow Chase of Boston assumed it to be true in the most elaborate contribution to Chase literature that had appeared in printed form, which he published in 1869. This connection has been given in practically eVery publication relating to Chase families that has later appeared, but our investigations fail to confirm it. "It was assumed, or claimed, that the brothers Aquila and Thomas Chase were sons of the Aquila Chase who was baptized in Chesham, 7 Aug. 1580. The name and date are entirely consistent with the supposition, but the facts studied at close range show that the assumption is not correct. "Extensive research shows that the aboVe named Aquila Chase went from Chesham to London, there married, was the father of six children, was a merchant tailor, lived in Knight Rider's street, attended the two Established Churches in that street and, with his wife and five of his children, was there buried. "The parish registers fail to show that he had a son Thomas but they do show that he had a son Aquila who was baptized in the parish of St. Nicholas, Cole Abbey. The parish regester further shows that Aquila Chase, the tailor, and Aquila his son, there baptized, were also buried there. As there was only one Chase family living in Knight Rider's street, 1606 to 1660, we feel justified in assuming that Aquila and Thomas Chase, the Hampton brothers, could NOT be the sons of Aquila Chase of Chesham, England. They may be descended from the Chesham family but our researches fail to show such a connection. "The use of the comparatively infrequent name of Aquila in both Chesham and New England is, however, very suggestive of a connection between the two families. "For the benefit of future investigators who may be interested in the origin of these early settlers of New England, we give the documentary records obtained, with our interpretation of the evidence they afford. ..." I'm a descendant of Aquila Chase of Hampton & I'd LOVE to learn of his ancestry. But unless someone has documentary evidence that disproves the above (neither the AF nor the WFT constitutes documentary evidence), I have to agree with John Carroll Chase, that his parentage has yet to be discovered. Anybody??? Ted

    3. I've been seeing the questions going back and forth about "Seven Generations of the Descendants of Aquila abd Thomas Chase" compiled by Chase and Chamberlain. NEHGS does not have it listed in their current sales catalog which I just received last week. I do find it listed, however, in their 1995 catalog and listed as their 1993 photo-reprint. In 1995 it's catalog number was #B3-08750 and priced $45.00 It's possible that it's not in the currant catalog because they have none left on the shelves. But I believe if you order it, they will print it. That's the way they handled it when I ordered the Chelmsford MA Vital Records. Of course it took a few weeks before I got the book. Anyway, check with Boston. The Sales Department, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 160 North Washington Street, Boston MA 02114-2120. E-mail address <sales@nehgs.org> Lois Tucker

    3. Hi,ALL Is anyone interested in forming a COMMON database for the CHASE family? I have one containing 3,600 names, some 760 Named CHASE, but I am quite willing to exchange what I have with others prepared to do likewise. The objective being to make it easier for those of CHASE ancestry to trace their origin and to try to unravel some of the "mysteries" surrounding the family origins. I live in England and am quite prepared to delve into Manorial Records --IF IT HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN DONE-- There is still some considerable controversy regarding the early CHASE ancestry. For instance There is a claim that the first known CHASE ,(in America) William of the 1630 Winthrop Fleet was married to Mary Townley and that their son William was " ..of Rogate,Sussex Parish". If he was then he was certainly not registered at the Parish Church. Has anyone else got any ideas how the research in this group could be made more coherent I would like to hear them. Who else is carrying out/carried out research in England,Wivenhoe/Chesham etc How many members have WWW pages with their family tree posted? 2. W. David Samuelsen
    3. Here is it that didn't make to the lists yesterday. One for You and One For Me There was a huge nut tree by the cemetery fence. One day two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me," said one boy. The bucket was so full, several rolled out towards the fence. Cycling down the road by the cemetery was a third boy. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, "One for you, one for me. One for you." He knew what it was. "Oh my god!" he shuddered, "It's Satan and St. Peter dividing the souls at the cemetery!" He cycled down the road and found an old man with a cane, hobbling along. "Come quick!" he said, "You won't believe what I heard. Satan and St. Peter are down at the cemetery dividing the souls." The man said, "Shoo, you brat! Can't you see I'm finding it hard to walk as it is!" After several pleas, the man hobbled to the cemetery and heard, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one..." The old man whispered, "Boy, you's been tellin' the truth! Let's see if we can see the Devil himself." Shivering with fear, they edged toward the fence, still unable to see anything, but they heard, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me. And one last one for you. That's all. Let's go get those nuts by the fence, and we'll be done." They say the old guy made it to town 10 minutes before the boy! Author unknown

The Chase Chronicle was a newsletter concerning (surprise) the Chase Chace family of which there was quite an active group apparently in the early 1900's////. genealogies, news items, little stories and letters, all contributed to an informational bonanza. I think you can purchase reproductions from NEHGS. Derek Chase Saint John NB

    3. While channel surfing today I ran across a televised auction. They were auctioning off a document from the late 1700's signed by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. It was a "passport" which gave one Rueben Chase and his boat "The Betsy" permission to travel with a shipment of coffee to England. The document went for $13K, due to the Washington and Jefferson signatures. No further mention was made of this Rueben Chase. I have a Rueben Chase ancestory who married one Hannah Estey but I think he would have been too young at this time, and can't make an immediate connection. I hope this is useful to someone. Please let me know if you know who this captain Rueben is. Regards, Kate O'Keefe Minneapolis

    1. [CHASE-L] Edward Chase
    2. NEELISGAL
    3. Here is my missing link. I hope someone can help. Edward Chase, birthplace and parents unknown; purported to be of the Aquila line; born c.1793, last known alive at age 78 in 1871 in correspondence to his son, Edwin, from Oroville, Butte County, CA where he held title to or an interest in three gold mines; Edward's wife unknown. Two known children: (1) Edwin Wilson Chase born (by repute) in Maine c.1824, took three Masonic degrees from Melody Lodge No. 2, Platteville, WI on 28 March 1850, married Ann Eliza Blackwell of the Virginia Blackwells (this puzzles me - he didn't marry until age 49; could this be his second marriage?) in New Orleans 18 December 1869, fathered two sons, Edward E. Chase and Joseph Carter Chase (my paternal grandfather), left his family behind in New Orleans to either join his father, Edward, in Butte County to take over administration of the holdings there as his elderly father had asked, and/or perhaps to El Paso, TX, or to seek copper in NM or AZ, died in Globe City, AZ Territory 8 March 1893, apparently destitute; and (2) Edward Carter Chase, birthdate and birthplace unknown, died by indian attack together with his wife (name unknown), nine-year-old son and five-year-old daughter near Fort Conche, TX as he returned from the US with funds to build a hotel in Santa Rosalia, Mexico where he owned property containing hot springs. Because of nonpayment of several hundred dollars still owed by Chase, a judgment was secured by one Dona Trinidad Beca and the property reverted back to her. I have no dates for these events. ( A seventeen-year-old daughter was traveling with the family and taken by the indian raiders and never heard from/about again; I wonder if she was the daughter of a previous marriage of either Edward's or his wife's.) My senior Edward Chase had one relative known to me - a sister or perhaps a sister-in-law - who resided in Logan City (present-day Sauk County, Loganville?) WI who wrote to my grandfather's brother, Edward E. Chase, on 2 April 1896 in response to correspondence of his dated 22 March 1896. She writes to "my dear nephew" and signs herself, "N. C. Lane" and was at that time "past seventy-four". [N. Chase? Lane? Probably not. Women didn't retain their maiden names in those days.] She was in possession of records, assembled by "her genealogist" which took the family back to Aquila but she refused to trust the material to the mail of that time, saying "I am very choice of this record" and mention was made about how to accomplish getting copies done. Thus, my reference to our line, via Edward, having been purported to descend from Aquila. I also have one other small nugget (no pun intended!) which I hope may help some California Chases to help me. I have correspondence from one "Maud" (no last name), addressed to her "Dear Cousin Edward" in New Orleans - he at that time was age 22 and a vet of the Spanish-American War - dated 4 December 1893 at Oroville, Butte County, CA. This letter is clearly a love letter disguised as a friendly response to a letter of his. I suspect that she was very smitten with him, and possibly was somewhat younger based upon the contents of the letter. I wonder how they met, unless his father, Edwin Wilson Chase, brought his son(s) out to Oroville to visit the claims at some point. I hope that something here will strike a chord with one of you on the list. I sure hope so! Thanks for anything that you have or may have to suggest as to how I should proceed.

    2. NEELISGAL
    3. I do not have the stone, but I do have a photocopy of it made from a photograph. From correspondence dated 3/29/71 to my uncle, John Churchill Chase of New Orleans, from one Bridie Tighe, probably the daughter of a friend or colleague, who was in school in Broughton, MA, I share the following: "Dear Mr. Chase . . . I talked to a delightful gentleman (gentleman is the only way to describe him) at the New England Historical Genealogical Society. He's very interested in genealogy and very interested in helping us. He said that the plaques are in storage but had a photograph of the Aquila Chase plaque. He xeroxed it and I'm sending it on to you. . . . If you would like a better reprint, Mr. Dean could arrange for a photographer to photograph the picture." She went to tell that a "print" (rubbing?) of the plaque could be arranged for $35-50 but the tablet would have to be taken out of storage. So, in 1971, it was still at the NEHGH. The copy is entirely legible. The image measures 5x8 inches bears what appears to be a bas relief of a sailing ship (don't ask me what kind, please!) at the top and looks something like this: Aquila Chase Mariner Hampton NH 1640 Newbury Mass 1646 By old repute the first Pilot at the mouth of the Merrimack River, Erected by his descendant John Carroll Chase, 1924. at the top
