    3. Hi,Once again,David, Re my previous response to you. ( For the benefit of the Group David raised the problem that could be created by contrasting data applying to the same Chase individuual and suggested a panel of experts within the Group be set up to decide which version was the most probable. I responded that I thought that ALL info. should be included with the proviso that ALL data was not 100% guaranteed and it was up to the individual to question its validity.) I have now had time to reflect on this and I have realised that there is a BIG problem with different data for the same individual, especially parents as that would indeed create chaos with the data base. I still feel that ALL info should be included on the Site and maybe the only way to achieve this is initially to have seperate databases with a summary of the main points. I was concerned about your panel of experts idea as I believe that it would increase controversy in as much that someone who firmly believes their data to be correct but is rejected by the panel may take umbrage. There is however considerable merit in a modified version of your idea in that where there are differences ANY one can givb their view as long as they state why they believe one version and not the next. From this would emerge 2 things 1) All Group members could make their own minds up having seen all the various views, these views could be included in the WWW site so that visitors could also contribute if they wish 2) It would establish which lines of research to take to try to get to the truth. In the main it is to be hoped that there are not too amny of such problemsbut there is the classic of the Origin of both William "...of 1630 Winthrop Fleet" and his wife Mary, sometimes refered to as Mary Townley. As a "novice" as you call yourself It would appear that you have a good insight into some of the problems. TO THE REST OF THE GROUP. Any Suggestions? According to "A Genealogy of the Folsom Family" by Jacob Chapman, George and Mary Marsh's daughter Sarah, b. 6 Jul 1685 m. H. Dearing of Winter Harbor. I assume the marriage to H. Dearing is just plain wrong. Can anyone clarify this for me?

    1. [CHASE-L] One Richard or two before Aquila??
    2. Liz Vose
    3. This was scanned from a book I forgot to write down. (sorry) At the top of the page I copied it says State of Maine (a set of four volumes) and this was taken from pages 1605 and 1606. CHASE The annals of North America are frequently embellished by this name, which has been borne by statesmen, jurists, soldiers, clergymen and others honored in the various walks of life. For many years the earliest known ancestor of the American family of this name was Aquila Chase, who was among the founders of Hampton, New Hampshire, and said to be from Cornwall, England, by several antiquarians on the authority of tradition. A long search has established, beyond a reasonable doubt, that he was from Chesham in Buckinghamshire, some thirty miles northwest of London. The family is said to have been of Norman origin, and it has been suggested that the name was formerly La Chasse. In the old English records it is spelled Chaace and Chaase, and in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it was modified to the form now most in use--Chase. (I) Matthew Chase, of Hundritche, parish of Chesham, gives his father's name as John and the father of the latter as Thomas. As the name of Matthew's wife is the first female found in the line, this article will number Matthew as the first. His wife was Elizabeth daughter of Richard Bould. (II) Richard, son of Matthew and Elizabeth (Bould) Chase, married Mary Roberts of Welsden, in Middlesex. He had brothers Francis, John, Matthew, Thomas, Ralph and William, and a sister Bridget (III) Richard (2), son of Richard and Mary (Roberts) Chase, was baptized August 23, 1542, and was married September 16, 1564, to Joan (or Anne) Bishop. Their children were: Robert, Henry, Lydia, Ezekiel, Dorcas, Aquila, Jason, Thomas, Abigail and Mordecai. (IV) Aquila, son of Richard (2) and Joan or Anne (Bishop) Chase, was baptized August 14, 1580, and died December 24, 1670. The unique name of Aquila is found nowhere in England, before or since, coupled with the name of Chase, which makes it reasonably certain that this Aquila was the ancestor of the American family. One tradition gives the name of his wife as Sarah, and another as Martha Jellison. Record is found of two sons, Thomas and Aquila, the latter born in 1618. It is generally believed that William Chase, the first of the name in America, was an elder son, and that the others came with him or followed later. The fact of their being minors would lead to their absence from the records of the earliest days of William in this country. Some authorities intimate that Thomas and Aquila were employed by their uncle, Thomas Chase, who was part owner of the ship "John and Francis," and thus became navigators and so found their way to America. This theory is borne out by the fact that Aquila was granted a house lot and six acres of marsh by the inhabitants of Newbury, Massachusetts; "on condition that he do go to sea and do service in the Towne with a boat for foure years." (V)Aquila (2), son of Aquila (I) Chase, settled in Newbury, Massachusetts (that part now Newburyport), about 1646. He was formerly in Hampton (now part of New Hampshire), where he and his brother Thomas received grants of land in June, 1640, along with fifty-five others. There, as owner of a house lot, he was listed among those entitled to a share in the common lands, December 23,1645. This he subsequently sold to his brother, as shown by town records after his removal to Newbury. His eldest child is said to have been born in Hampton. His wife, Anne (Wheeler) Chase, was a daughter of John Wheeler, who came from Salisbury, England. In September, 1646, according to the county records, Aquila Chase and his wife, with her brother, David Wheeler, were presented and fined "for gathering pease on the Sabbath." They were admonished by the court, after which their fines were remitted. Mr. Chase died December 27, 1670, aged fifty-two years. His widow married again, and died April 21, 1687. Aquila Chase's children were named: Sarah and Anne (twins), Priscilla, Mary, Aquila, Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Ruth, Daniel, and Moses. (The line after Aquila goes to his eleventh child, Moses. If anyone wishes me to send any more of this, I will continue it.) By the way, someone later told me there was only one Richard, so I am confused by this. Was there one or two Richards between Mathew and his descendant Aquila. 1. [CHASE-L] Chase Database-Scope,etc.
    2. k.hume
    3. All, I hope you can endure all this to the end. If in doubt print it and read it in bed you could doze off very quickly but I hope not. Further to my earlier email of today I would like to get an agreed definition and scope for this project. IT WILL ALSO BE NECESSARY TO HAVE AT LEAST 2 OTHER VOLUNTEERS TO BE PREPARED TO ASSIST AS DEFINED LATER BUT ANY OFFERS OF HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED Now I do not want this to sound too technical and I am sure many of you will say "Hey! let's just get on with it!" but before launching OUR database I do believe it is important to agree on the format and to be clear on our aims and objectives even if they appear obvious. I would therefore like to start this off but would INVITE Group members ideas and input. Please do not be backward in suggesting anything you feel you would like to see included but I would ask that all suggestions apply to the Group as a whole and not just to individual members. Remember these are only my ideas. I STRONGLY URGE ALL TO HAVE A LOOK AT THE SITES AT www.Genweb.net ,where we will be based, before reading on to see some fine examples of Family History Sites. There is one there with 2 Chase family, father and daughter.(Sams Page) 1) OBJECTIVES. a) To ensure that the necessary facilities to carry out the Project are available and to agree how this facility should be maintained c) To coordinate all current and future research on the CHASE family name to avoid repetition. c) To make all relavent information so gained available to all, whether members of our group or not, by means of a Common Database(s) and any other medium(Wills,Articles, potted histories of Chase family members etc.) 2) SCOPE Initially I was thinking that the Dbase should only include those with CHASE/CHACE blood and their spouses as the inclusion of families of Spouses could create an enormous Dbase. However with the amount of WWW space available it is possible to include spouse families as well but INITIALLY would suggest that this be confined to direct ancestors of spouses, ie parents, grandparents, gg grandparents etc. We could link to Members own WWW pages to access their full family data. I WILL STRESS THAT IT IS NOW POSSIBLE TO INCLUDE EVERY CHASE MEMBER'S FULL FAMILY BUT WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE INITIAL DBASE PREDOMINANTLY CHASE REMEMBERING OUR OBJECTIVES. It would be possible to have seperate pages for the families of Chase Spouses on the site and to this end all those with the expertise should be prepares to help others with writing their own WWW pages 2) MAINTENANCE a) The maintenace and updating of the Site will be the responsibility of One member of the Group. However to ensure continuity there will be 2 other appointed Members,(or such number agreed by the Group) who will have access to the Database and other items on the site. All 3 will have to have the knowledge required to carry out updating and any necessary alterations/additions and be able to convert Members Gedcom files to HTML, suitable for the WWW This will be achieved by having the appropriate Username and Password. b) Initialy it may be necessary to update the site every few days but as the project settles down once a week should be sufficient. if the group agrees that I manage the project the week-ends are best as there may be considerable uploading. At present any additional data into the dbase means that the whole datbase has to be re-compiled. While this is no problem uploading times to the site could be considerable and weekday use in the UK is not free but cheaper at week-ends 3) CONTENT a) Database(s) b) Members Interests ( It is hoped all members will contribute and give means of contact, email address preferable) c) Links to Members own WWW sites d) List of members prepared to do "Look-ups" or provide other general or specific assistance. This would also include books on CHASE or related history and a description of their contents but only where the owners were prepared to carry out such "Looks-up" e) A page devoted to the origins of Names of Group members f) Early Chase Histories ( 500/1000 words) g) Links to i) Sites and News groups of specific interest ii) Sites that members have found useful h) YOUR SUGGESTIONS PLEASE 4) CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SITE a) Database i)All contributions to the Database should be made by means of gedcom files uless there are less than 10 lines of information in which case text files will be acceptable. ii) Should any member require help with how to do this the Manager will assist. iii) All contributors should try to ensure that where connections to persons already in the database are made those names should not be repeated but a message should be included to state to whom the link should be made when the data is merged into the main database. There is no problem including CHASE family whose connections to the database are not known. iv) It is not essential to include sources if these are unknown but in such cases, and where possible, the source for an individual should be entered as the contributor. 5) SUPPLY OF INFORMATION FROM THE DATABASE The database can be set up so that it can be down loaded. However from experience I know that many database owners are reluctant to "give away" the fruits of many years hard work and this will be a composite of databases I have no problem with giving away my data but I do know that there are bound to be those who will not wish to do this. Unless the Group is united on this matter then the usual convention of retaining the base data but supplying information on request will prevail. It should be remembered that individual www pages can be copied at the click of the mouse button. 6) WWW SITE LAYOUT I am prepared to do this and can handle most of the basic html code ONCE AGAIN I INVITE SUGGESTIONS and would willingly pass this job on to a more experienced member of the Group. Having looked at the Genweb layouts I have a few ideas but would suggest the project get underway as soon as possible and additions/alterations made as developments require. THERE YOU GO! I have no doubt I have not covered everything here but hope it is enough to set you all thinking and look forward to some positive responses. Remember the "impossible" is only achievable by those who did not know "it could not be done" Keith There is probably a lot more that need to be discussed but I cannot stress too strongly that this is YOUR Project. Cornish was the name of the Town which these Chases founded in the New World, the name being taken from their village in Cornwall, England. This information is taken from an old manuscript called History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire. My line runs as follows: Aquila Chase, b. 1618 m. Ann Wheeler. He d, 1670; had son Ensign Moses Chase, b. 12-24-1663, m. 1684 Anne Follansbee; had 9 children. Had son Daniel Chase, b. 9-20-1685, m. 1707 Sarah March. He d.1768. They had son, Judge Samuel Chase, b. 9-28-1707, m. Mary Dudley. She was born 2-22-1711, d. 2-12-1789. Had son, Deacon Dudley Chase, b. 8-29-1730, Sutton, MA, m. 8-23-1753 Alice Corbett of Mendon, MA. She was b. 1732 and d. 9-13-1813. They had son Ithamar Chase, b. 9-27-1762, Sutton, MA; m. Janette Ralston, her parents being of Scotland. Ithamar d. 8-1817 in Keene, NH; wife Janette b. 7-26-1773 in Charlestown, MA. They had son Dudley Chase, b. NH or Maine (right on the line in Chatham) 9-14-1801, wife unknown. Dudley Heber was a brother of Salmon Portland Chase. Dudley had a son, Charles B. Chase, ab. Strathum, Rockingham Co., NH c. 3-1848. He married Elizabeth Anne Warner (Werner) Kenyon (her 2nd marriage). They had daughter, Pearl Chase, b. St. Joseph, MO who married Richard Crawford Barrett, Jr. of Southampton Co., VA. They had son, Richard Bradford Barrett, b. 1807 in Nansemond Co., VA; m. Bernice Bailey of Erwin, TN; they had two children, Elizabeth Chase Barrett Chandler and Richard Crawford Barrett. I and my brother are still living. I do have Chase line back in England, but will have to search for that manuscript. This line, up to Salmon Portland Chase's generation is well documented. I have copies of birth and death certificates, wills and accountings of estates, census records, etc. I have also names and spouses of siblings, etc. The Chases descended of Aquila are eligible to join any of several New England Societies. I am seriously engaged at this time in another one of my lines, but if I can help anyone, I will try - at my own pace. bbc

    3. ALL MEMBERS, Thanks to MARK STEARNS I have contacted Genweb.net and we have been offered as much server space as we need for the CHASE Project. THERE ARE NO STRINGS ATTACHED to this generous offer and the only condition is that the information must not be commercial and must be available to all. I have replied accepting the offer,on behalf of the Group and am awaiting the acceptance of my username and password and any further information. Once I have received this I would hope to have our BASIC site up and running in a week. I do not believe it is possible to get a better offer and I also feel that we will get maximum exposure on a Server that will become very popular. There are not many people taking advantage of this offer at the moment but those who have have produced Sites of a most sophisticated and attractive nature. Obviously our first objective must be FUNCTIONALITY. The very best Site hera in Britain,The Genuki one, has no fancy graphics or backgrounds but is the definitive site for information. However I am sure we would all like to see OUR site looking not only informative but as attractive as possible without having too many animated bits all over the place. I have received various suggestions and ideas and will be sending a seperate email containing them and the SCOPE of the Project, as I see it and inviting input from members, Keith Hume Keith Hume, email khume@netcomuk.co.uk http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~khume/home.html Kent,England Researching:- HULME,DAWSON,(In Lancs.) 1. [CHASE-L] Descendants of Wm. CHASE of 1630
    2. Rexchase
    3. Good afternnoon friends, I am trying to retrace and expand some of the known CHASE descendants of William CHASE of the 1630 Winthrop Fleet. Specifically: Joshua CHASE of Charlestown, R.I., until after 1780, then of Hopkinton and Westerly, R.I., born at Westerly 15 June 1750, died 13 Jan. 1800. He married, about 1775, Michael (sic,? Rachel) JOHNSON, born in 1752, died in 1814. #1 QUESTION: Did Joshua & Michael have more than the nine children commonly listed? Of the nine listed children, my interest pertains to only TWO of the children & their descendants): 1. Job, b. at Charlestown in 1776; m. Lois TOLLES. One child: Rueben, of Schenectady, N. Y. # 2 & 3 QUESTIONS: Did Job & Lois have more than one child? Did Rueben have children? 2. Joshua, b. at Charlestown in 1778; d. 31 May 1856; m. Polly HACKETT. Two children listed: Edwin of Oswego, N.Y. and George, of Wisconsin. #4 & 5 QUESTIONS: Did Joshua & Polly have any more children? Did Edwin and George have children? I am trying to find the siblings, parents, & other relatives of Joseph Johnson CHASE, b. 26 Dec 1819 in either Delaware or Greene Counties, New York. He is not the Joseph Johnson CHASE b. in 1780 or the Joseph Johnson CHASE b. in 1814 - both of whom descend from the above Joshua & Michael - but I think my Joseph Johnson CHASE is probably related. Any answers to the above five questions or other assistance would be appreciated. Rex Chase

    1. [CHASE-L] Change in Family History Library in SLC
    2. W. David Samuelsen
    3. Delete this if you already saw the message on other list(s). Brace yourself! The Family History Library moved all of the family histories and biographies out of the library to Joseph Smith Memorial Building 4th floor West Wing. The reason is simple. Ran out of space for more new and incoming city, county, state books, etc. Most of family histories are microfilmed. However if you want to save $$ while photocoping - go to JSMB where it is 5 cent per copy. Film copy is 20 cents. The change is effective Friday 10 April 1998. W. David Samuelsen, living in Salt Lake City.

    1. [CHASE-L] CHASE Database & Wish List
    2. k.hume
    3. All, Since my initial message regarding the formation of a "COMMON" Chase database I have had some responses, all in favour of the concept. I do not know how many members there are in this group so it is not easy to estimate the interest. For the Project to be successful it is necessary for those who want information be prepared to give some. If there are those who are not prepared to share their data this is their choice entirely but I for one am happy to share mine. If people using info. supplied from me do not care to acknowlede where it came from that really does not bother me. I have received so much data, given freely , from others, that I do not feel I have a right to withold what I have I n some cases I cannot be entirely sure where it came from. Where ever possible I will try to work my way through my database inputting sources. I SHOULD STRESS THAT WHILE I HAVE MANY SOURCES IN MY ORIGINAL DATA SHORTAGE OF WWW SPACE HAS RESTRICTED ME FROM INCLUDING IT IN THE CURRENT "CHASE" DATA ON MY WEB SITE. Providing I can arrange space on an appropriate Server I would hope to keep a database of ALL queries put to the Group and to log, WITH THE COOPERATION OF MEMBERS, the responses if any. For those of you interested in this project I would like to hear what YOU would like to see in the way of information or facilities to improve the the workings of the Group. I am sure you will all realise this entails a fair degree of work and I could not commit myself to forming a One Name Study Group as defined by the Guild Of One Name Studies( GOONS, no not a joke a very serious organisation) but maybe something to think about. I must say I am surprised that among the hundreds of One Name Study Groups the CHASE name is not among them, remembering that the name is considered by some to be among the Top Fifty in the USA. It is a Great name and for myself, an Australian living near London, I feel somewhat proud to be descended from those early pioneers who never whinged and whined about their lot but went to new lands to make a new life and in the process a new nation. I am fortunate in that this applies not only to the USA but to Canada and Australia as well. I already have my complete line from the first William so.. MY wish list? 1) To resolve William Chase's ancestry here in England and in the process do likewise for Aquil Chase. 2) To "ratioalise" and make readily available the information about the CHASE family so as to either be succesful with A) and ensure that the same old ground is not covered by new researchers. I look forward to hearing from as many of you as possible even if the response is negative. If you see great difficulties tell me about them. I apologise for the length of this email but not for its content.
