    3. ALL, I have now merged some of the databases I have received from you all and have found that where you have also submitted your basic details to the Researcher Page on the CHASE site it makes the task VERY much easier as I can track back,in many cases, to an ancestor already on the Chase database and "split & merge" the data. Even with this it takes about 45 minutes to ensure all,(or as many as possible) duplications do not occur. The new database will include 800 NEW entries and there will be more to come. Thank you to all those who have sent data and a special thanks to all of you having problems for persisting in your efforts, Keith Hume Keith Hume, email khume@netcomuk.co.uk CHASE-L Website at:- http://www.surnameweb.org/centers/c/chase/index.html http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~khume/home.html Kent,England Researching:- HULME,DAWSON,(In Lancs.) 3. I agree with Rex (see below). I've had many false leads on my CHASE, MITCHELL and MERRILL ancestry due to J. M. Seaver's prolific publication of myth, mystery, and magnification attached to facts he may have found (or invented.) Beware! Lillian Follett-Hall lilhall@unix.cde.com >>I think probably anything written by the above Mr. J. Montgomery Seaver should be thoroughly researched before accepting it. In the Chase Chronicle of July-Oct, 1930, Vol. 20, #3-4, Page 31, it gives the whole story on how he was charged by the Feds and the State of Mass. for mail fraud in as much as he had , among other things, arranged a plan for selling books purporting to give the records of various families back to the time of William the Conqueror. He had been receiving 300 to 400 pieces of mail per day. At the time of his arrest (& later conviction), he was the president of the American Historical- Genealogical Society. There are quite a few articles about the Chase family written by him and I think there may even be a short book about the Chase Family by him. It proves the old saw about being published does not make for accuracy or authenticity. Rex Chase

    3. Hi everyone, I am looking for information on Oliver Gilman CHASE, born on Aug. 12, 1765 probably in Newburysport, Essex, MA. One lead names his father as Samuel but I have not been able to document this. Oliver married Jane GLENN who was born Feb 10, 1775 in PA. They had 10 children and my line goes through George, b. Nov 24, 1816 in Mead, Crawford, PA. He married Mary Ann STOWELL and they had at least 5 children. My line continues through Charles Newton Chase, ( b. Nov. 7, 1839 in Chataugus, NY) who married Mary LORD (b. Oct. 5, 1842 in Meadville, Crawford, PA). Together they had 7 children, one being Fred Collins CHASE who was my great-grandfather. Thanks to anyone who might have information on Oliver Gilman CHASE. I have considerable information on much of this line and would be happy to share with anyone who is researching the same lines. Thanks again, Karen Piorek

    1. [CHASE-L] Aquila Chase
    2. RAChase
    3. There is disagreement among published Chase genealogies about the lineage of the brothers Aquila and Thomas Chase who arrived in Hampton NH in 1639, and subsequently located in Newbury (now Newburyport) MA. The Chase Family History by J.M. Seaver (1929) lists the Aquila Chase born in Chesham in 1580 as the one which came to Hampton NH in 1639. This is clearly in error, since it is refuted by a recorded court deposition filed by Aquila in Ipswich Mass. in 1666 wherein he gives his age as 48, making the year of his birth about 1618 ("Decendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase"; John Chase & Geo. Chamberlain, 1928). The Chase/Chamberlain genealogy assumes that the Chesham Aquila (b. 1580) is the Aquila Chaste (in later records written as Chase) who is listed in Parish records in London as marrying a Martha Jelliman on 22 June 1606, and who had a number of children whose baptisms are recorded there. Among them was a son Aquila who was bp. 9 April 1626 (his burial there in the year 1659/60 is also recorded). There is no record of a son Thomas. Chase/Chamberlain therefore break the Chase genealogy between the Chesham Chases, and the brothers Aquila and Thomas in Hampton, since no factual documentation of the linkage apparently could be found. Any information (hopefully in the form of documented references) that anyone can provide on the parents, birth, and early life of the Newbury MA Aquilla and Thomas will be most welcome. Dick Chase Many recent Chase family compilers list the Aquila and Thomas who came to New Hampshire as children of the senior Aquila Chase of Chesham (b. 1580, son of Richard and Joan Chase) and Martha Jelliman, married 22 June 1606. Presently available evidence suggests that this is in error. If the Chesham Aquila is indeed the Aquila listed in the London records, then it seems unlikely that he could be the father of the brothers Aquila and Thomas; if he is their father, then the Aquila listed in London must be a different one, and Martha Jelliman cannot be his spouse and their mother.

    3. One way to carve out a piece of a family line from a full Family Tree Maker data base file is to create a Decendant Tree (or Ancestor Tree, depending upon what you are trying to isolate) for the INDIVIDUAL that you are going down (or up) from. Then use the "Copy/export individuals in the Decendant (or Ancestor) tree" command which is found in the FILE Menu while the tree is displayed. When you save the copied file, it will contain all the information just for those individuals in the tree you created. You can then create a GEDCOM file from it if that's what you are after. (You can select the Individual from whom you want to create the tree by clicking on him/her in a Custom Report list for the initial data base. Create the Decendant or Ancestor Tree when the Family Page for the individual is displayed)

Folks, I don't use FTM so anything you find irrelevant please disregard. Every genealogy program should have, and most do have a "split file" utility, for splitting off family groupings from the main database. The file that you successfully split off, is now on it's own...and therefore can be converted into GEdcom in the normal way. It is an "electronic splitting" not printing off a report , or saving as RTF or anything .. You should end up with a New File, named something DIfferent..and then, using that file as the base, you go "Export Gedcom" or "create gedcom"... If your program will NOT do this...it is a basic and serious flaw in it's philosophy to my mind. Derek

    3. Chasers, Several folks have asked me to forward any help I got about exporting GEDCOM's in FTM. I apologize for cluttering our list with this. But since Keith Hume is working hard to get our CHASE page up with our data it does seem relevant right now. I welcome any additions or corrections! Hi Molly, Yes, I think you were the one that had asked after I did for someone to help with that. I was going to forward whatever I was able to find, but so far I still don't have a completely satisfactory answer. I've had an awful time with it, even though I've been using FTM for several years. Here's what I understand so far: You can send your entire GEDCOM as an attachment in an email. Assuming that you've already got your file saved somewhere as GEDCOM, you just hit your attachment button on your email program and it will pull up a search box. Then you can find your file and select it. If you don't know how to save your file as GEDCOM, here's how. While you have your file opened in FTM, go up under File and click on Copy/Export Family File. This will bring up a dialog box. At the bottom of the box is a Save As Type field. Click on the arrow to see the different types of files you can save as. You'll want to select GEDCOM. Now just click on Save and you're file will be saved as GEDCOM. It's icon will look like a little tree. This is the file you'll choose when you're doing your attachment. What I was really wanting was how to separate certain branches of my file. I have selected Gen Report to do an ancestor or descendant report for a certain person. Then you can do a Copy/Export the same way you did before except that you can't save your Gen Report in GEDCOM format. It has to be either .txt or .rft. If you save it as .txt you can attach it to an email, but your recipient can't plug it in to his genealogy program. It's just a text report. I hope this has been at least a little helpful. If I hear more I'll pass it along! Jan
