    1. Re: [CHASE-L] Just between you & me
    2. Hey there----Sorry---you got the wrong Chase There has been ANOTHER AND MUCH LATER Chase ---rather recently---in the 1980s who was the President of the New England Genea. Society. I just stopped to look his name up for ya'all. (I'm not THAT FLAKEY YET I hope.). HE WAS PRESIDENT of the New England H.G.S. IN 1989-1990 AT LEAST AS I HAVE THE NEW ENGLAND HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL REGISTER, VOL. CXLiii OCTOBER, 1989 SITTING RIGHT HERE IN FRONT OF ME. This is the man I was referring to. He was listed as being from Dover, Ma. at that time----1989.--you guys. Ginger in Az.

    2. Congratulations Dave White and Rex Chase---Now we're getting somewhere. What you are stating and sharing with all of the Chases is what this whole group is all about. One thing is quite clear to me. It is time for one of you to put together a book on Aquila and Thomas Chase. Noone to my knowledge has done that in recent years. There you could clearly explain to ALL the whole story. For me, I know where I am connected ---and that is clearly proven back to William Chase who was no relation to Aquila or Thomas. Keep up the good work you two and all of you interested in Aquila and Thomas. This should help many generations to come. We all are ever grateful to Keith Hume for taking on this monumental project of sorting out all of us and putting us where we belong with our lineage. These rousing discussions are healthy and certainly will clarify our questions. I wish Keith could find another Chase link ---in England---who is an avid genealogist as you obviously are. Then we could really have fun as they could help solve the questions by making the necessary visits to the Buckinghamshire Record Office, British Library, Essex County Record Office, Public Record Office and many other places where we could dig out information. Let us hope that one of you is keeping the New England Historic Genealogical Society informed of this group and the exciting things it is accomplishing. Ginger in Az.

    2. Having, I guess, started the present discussion on the appropriateness of "our" web page continuing to show this [at best] questionable linkage between the Aquilas, I appreciate the candid responses. My strong feeling is that we should not perpetuate what from all current evidence is an invalid genealogy. Two quick further comments: (1) the Chamberlain / Chase genealogy (7 generations of the descendants of A & T...) is very clear (as a good research work should be--I have the book, by the way) that they could not determine with any certainty that the Aquila who married Martha Jelliman (per the London Parish records) was the Aquila from Chesham (son of Richard & Joan). Since Aquila was not a common name, they state that they ASSUMED the two were probably one and the same individual since no other record of the Chesham Aquila could be found. (2) The possible Wales connection is most interesting since I had just come across a reference (of ? reliability) that the Chesham Aquila family had moved to "Conway, England." Keith has supplied the information that while there is no CONWAY in the UK, there is a CONWY in Wales. The search goes on... Dick Chase

    3. All, All is well with the server. I have uploaded the NEW front page designed by Matthew Chase with comments and suggestions from the "Helpers" team. Have a Look I have also added a link from the "Meanings..." page to the Copies of the CHASE/CHACE crests copied from Ginger Reeder Christensen's excellent book. The images were scanned to allow downloading and "cleaning up" by those who are adept at such taks. I have started as can be seen in the lower l.hand golden cross. PLEASE NOTE There is still a small problem with the server. When attempting to access the "Meanings" page you may suffer a delay. wait 30 seconds then try again. I have done this 4 times now I must add this is NOT a fault of the artist whose originals are very good. 3. I agree with Rex. It is painful to see someone clarify an issue with good source material only to see someone else, without knowledge of the material, start the disproven claims all over again. Maybe a corner to argue the issues would serve better. Here is a quote from one of many Chase comments I found at http://www.genforum.com/chase They have had a lot of discussion around this issue. This message was posted by Stan Cowan on April 13, 1998. He may exaggerate about something called "clear proof", but this is what he said: "I keep seeing new messages appearing in this Forum citing the old data (which I believe dates back to the 19th century) that show Aquila and Thomas Chase of Newbury, MA, to be sons of Aquila Chase of Chesham, England, whose ancestry is traced back to the 15th century. There are also several messages appearing in this Forum clearly stating that this old claim is INCORRECT. The Aquila Chase of Chesham did have a son named Aquila, but "Seven Generations of the Descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase," which was published more than 60 years ago, reports that there is clear proof that this son DIED AND WAS BURIED IN ENGLAND, and never emigrated to America." Also, as a FTM user, I do think that many of the published trees are just re-do's of previously published trees without sources or evidence. However, the FTM site has a new service that I love. They now have on line the full text of more than 500 genealogical texts. They add a few every day. Right now, they are heavy on Indiana sources, but they have some from all over. Among them is "Some of the Descendants of William Chase" compiled by George Walter Chamberlain for John Carrol Chase. The texts are mostly full length and fully searchable. I paid the $39 a year to join their library and immediately found some wonderful material on my Meason/Mason line. Since you have to pay to get access, the FTM library doesn't meet Kieth's needs. But it is really a promising site for source material. 2. Discussions about Aquila and Thomas< Have you read any of the old Chase Chronicles that were printed in the early part of the century? Many references were made then about the fact that the Chases came from Wales. Could very well be true you know. I have often wondered how much REAL RESEARCH was carried on for any of the Chases. Regardless, I believe we should pay attention to the fact that there was much talk about the Chase Family coming from Wales. (Now that was 100 years ago they were talking about that so In my opinion we should pay attention to what they were writing back that many years ago.) Also, isn't there quite a good reference to Aquila(lla) coming from Chesham? in the 7 generations of A and T. Chase book? Perhaps we should all review that old book that can be found in the New England H. Genea. Society Library and can be gotten on loan if one belongs to the society. I have a suggestion: For those connected to Aquilla and Thomas I suggest you contact the Chase who was President of the New England H. Genea. Society a few years back. He surely would have done his home work on Aq. and Th. since he was connected to them. Ginger in Az. P.S. Anyone taking a trip to Bucks. Co. this summer? Also, Jelliman is clearly the right spelling ---As so many of us do---when transcribing. I remember that spelling of that when I first started researching in the Bucks. Co. Record Office in England.

    2. hi all, more on rex chase's comments and "to sever or not to sever". tis a dilemma. who are the parents of Aquila and Thomas? i have a distant cousin in Vermont who has related a strange story to me. he says a researcher in Texas has passed onto him that in records in London, he (the researcher) discovered that Aquila and Thomas are sons of Mordecai Chasem the 10th child and 7th son of Richard Chase and Joan Bishop. Mordecai was executed (religious crimes?) by order of the king by being impaled on stakes. his sons fled to Cornwall, and from that location emigrated to the colonies. i wrote to a contact in Texas, but to no avail. The man had died, and his estate had no knowledge of his interests in genealogy. this is an interesting lead, however, and one i hope to be able to do some follow-up one day. i had hoped to be in England this year; now it appears it will be next year at the soonest. any comments greatly appreciated. I believe it may be appropriate to sever the linkage between the English Aquila and American Aquila until such time as it is proved. Right now there is evidence that the English Aquila and his son Aquila are tucked away in a cemetery or church in England, and that the American Aquila is most unlikely to have been his son. Also, I think to maintain the linkage serves to continue the wishful thinking of many who simply accept the connection based on some genealogy program like Family Tree and who would never bother to read the notes. In order to save the possible (but unlikely) linkage, perhaps a note can be placed in the American and English Aquila regarding the controversy as a red alert. Also, perhaps some other relationship one day can be established...uncle, etc. For example, my own ancestors can only be traced back to 1819 in New York and I think I have some reason to believe they came out of William Chase of the Winthrop Fleet but I am not going to skip one generation, labeling it as "unknown", and then pick up and go on back to William. Something like this would only create misunderstandings. Rex Gilman Chase

    3. Jane, I could find nothing on your relative in our database. I will however enter the details in the database. Have you any other CHASE descendants I can enter at the same time? He is obviously of the Loyalist Group. I have searched the Chase Land Records Index as if he was a Loyalist or son of one he would have been entitled to a Grant of Land. A Grant of 180 acres was made to a Samuel CHASE at 51,61 St David , St David Parish, Charlotte County on 1st November 1810. This looks highly promising and I would say refers to your relative. The important document is the Petition for the Land Grant as he will give his details and the fact he has children. Sometimes the ages of the children are given and on rare occasions their names. I do point out in my preamble that ALL information in the database should be checked and that there is no guarantee of validity of the info. I do not want to "sever" this link but it might be a good idea to add a note to the American Aquilla that no proof of parenthood has been evidenced. I am all too well aware that there are those that will ignore this but I will maintain that without such unsubstantiated information I for one would never have found my CHASE links which are now prooved, or as much prooved as one could reasonably expect. Incidentally refering to "Selliman" should be "Jelliman". I have one line that shows this lady,"Jelliman being connected to William Chase " ..of the Winthrop Fleet" So the whole matter is suspect. So much confusion was caused by the frantic efforts of some CHASE families to prove their relationships to Mary TOWNLEY that much misinformation has accrued as a result but there has also been much positive info discovered. There is a place called Conwy in the UK.,Repeat CONWY, it is in North Wales. Did you search the UK Ordnance Survey Site which has a searchable database? There is a link to their site from my page, address below. It is a site you should "Bookmark" I must get more enquiries re places in the UK than I do on my family! You can also download a map of the UK if you need it. The fact is, to date I have been unable to find any reference that provides a clue to the parents of Aquila and Thomas. Postings on genealogical sites for anyone with any information on their ancestry have either gone unresponded to, or brought replies confirming that there does not seem to be any presently available evidence. (There also have, of course, been responses that sent me copies of the linkage that we now show, and which is displayed on myriad copies of copies of copies of Chase family trees that can be found on genealogical sites everywhere.) As I have previously stated, if it is the Chesham Aquila that married Martha Jelliman (our site shows it as "Selliman", by the way), then they (almost) absolutely cannot be the parents of the Hampton NH Aquila (based on Parish records). If a different Aquila married Martha, then we have no clue (that I have yet been able to find) what happened to the Chesham Aquila. By the way Keith, I do have a reference (of questionable reliability) that the Chesham Aquila moved to "Conway" (England). Nothing I have on your fair country shows such a place. Any ideas??
