In a message dated 98-06-19 18:54:08 EDT, you write: << He was baptized at St Nicholas Cole Abbey 9th April 1626 abut from other sources it is known that his year of birth was 1618. He emigrated to America in 1640 and settled in New Hampshire,. >> Good Evening, The above was taken from the Noble book and seems to have been successfully put to rest in later years by John Carroll Chase, President of the NEGHS and author of "Seven Generations of the descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase". The above mentioned Aquila was born 9 April 1626 and did not go to America but rather he died and was buried in Cole Abbey 10 January 1659/1660. >From the Chase Chronicle, Vol. 19, Jan-April, 1929, #1-2: "The English Ancestry of American Chases" "Who can show it?" "So many varying and erroneous statements have been printed in regard to the coming of the Chases to this country that it appears desirable to set forth the proven facts in the case, although it is probably a hopeless task to correct the unnumbered stories that have appeared.....more than four-score years ago." "The original story that the brothers, Aquila and Thomas Chase, who had grants of land in Hampton, N.H., in 1640 (the first official mention of them that has been found), came from Cornwall, England, was disproved by Mr. George Bigelow Chase of Boston, in an article in the HERALDIC JOURNAL, published in 1868. The investigations in regard to the matter was made by Mr. Horatio G. Somberby, who reported that the family originated in Chesham, County Bucks, and this has been repeatedlly asserted in practically every published bit of the family genealogy." "It was assumed, or claimed, that the aforesaid brothers were the sons of the Aquila Chase who was baptized in Chesham, 7 Aug. 1580, and the names and dates are entirely consistent with the supposition, but recent careful and extended research shows that the assumption is not correct." "This Aquila Chase went from Chesham to London, 22 June 1606, married there Martha Jelliman, and was the father of six children. He was a merchant tailor, lived in Knight Rider's street, attended the two established Churches in that street, and with his wife and five children was there buried. The parish records do not show that he had a son Thomas but they do show that he had a son Aquila, who was baptized in the parish of St. Nicholas, Cole Abbey, 9 April 1626, and was buried there 10 Jany. 1659/60, so that he could not have been identical with Aquila Chase of Hampton, and, furthermore, there was only one Chase family living in Knight Rider's street from 1606 to 1660. The brothers may be descended from the Chesham family but these researches fail to show such a connection." "The use of the comparatively infrequent name of Aquila in both Chesham and New England is, however, very suggestive of the relationship of the two families." (many more paragraphs about William Chase, John Chase, Rev. Thomas Chase, the fortune myth, etc.) "If any reliable proof from undisputed original records can be adduced to show the connection between the English and American families the writer would be more than pleased to have it, but the proof must be something more than a reiteration of errors that have been in print for the past eighty years." (signed) "JOHN CARROLL CHASE, President, NEGHS" I think the Noble book was published BEFORE this article was written. What was the date of original publication of the Noble book? I would be interested in comments regarding John Carroll Chase's last paragraph. It sounds like he was really getting exasperated & taxed!! Rex Gilman Chase
I have Family Tree Maker Deluxe 2.01 can someone PLEASE tell me how to copy the index? Right clicking doesn't work. I'm desperate. I need my index so I can put it on my site. Also, how can I number each person in my list without having to click on each individual person? I think that is considered a reference number? Or is that not what it is for? Thanks! Chase and Sanborn? The coffee people???How about that. OK---Here we go again. Reference Noble's Book--added info. p. 6. Pedigree No. 2 Thomas Chase of Hundridge Chesham. Thomas Chase was father of Richard, Elizabeth, Agnes, Christian and William The above Richard of Chesham bp.1542 was father of Robert, Henry, Lydia, Ezekiel, Dorcas, Aquila, Jason, Thomas, Abigail, Mordecai. This Aquila was listed as a merchant and taylor in London7-8-1580,m Martha Jelliman, d. 1643. The above Aquila had Ann, Thomas, Aquila (2) Aquila 2 was a mariner, b. 1616, bp 9-4-1626, Emigrated to America in 1640, d 1670(w), 5 sons, 6 dau. in America. Thomas above also emigrated. p.9. Aquila (1580-1643) Born in Chesham but went to London before 1606, for he married Martha Jelliman in London in that year. He was a merchant Tailor and citizen of London. There is a puzzle about his death and burial. In the register of St. Nicholas Cole Abbey are found these entries: 9th Fe. 1643/4--Aquila Chase Tailer was buried at the feet of the widow Maie (she has been buried in January of that year)10th Jan. 1659/60--Aquila Chase was buried in ye cloister before Mr. Parker's widow. It seems improbably that there were two Aquila Chases. One possibility is that the second entry records a reburial. But, there is little chance of elucidation, because the church was rebuilt in 1677 and was bombed to a ruin in the Second WW p. 10 The Children of Aquila 1 j (1)1580-1643 The register of St. Nicolas Cole Abbey shows that he had five daughters born between 1609 and 1623: three died young. His two sons, who emigrated to America, are more full described in Chapter 9. THOMAS;;Born about 1614 but no baptism has been found. He emigrated to America in 1640 and settled in New Hampshire. He died in 1652. AQUILA--2 He was baptized at St Nicholas Cole Abbey 9th April 1626 abut from other sources it is known that his year of birth was 1618. He emigrated to America in 1640 and settled in New Hampshire,. He died in 1670. These two brothers had large families and are the ancestors of a vast number of descendants. CHAPTER 9 >From the first half of the 17th century until recent times there have been Chase emigrations to America. p. 52--Richard's fourth son Aquila (1580-1643) became a Merchant Taileor of London. He had five daughters and two sons and the baptisms of the daughters and one son are in the register of St. Nicholas, Cole Abbey. AQUILA 2 His baptism is in the Cole Abbey register---9th Apr. 1626 but from other sources it is known that he was born in 1618. Neither the baptism or the year of birth of Thomas has been found but there is every reason to believe that he was a son of Aquila 1 because in an American deed he is referred to as the brother of Aquila 2. He may have been the elder. The late baptism of Aquila 2 and the absence of that of Thomas could be due to Aquila 1 being born of a nonconformist family, and probably Baptist. In this branch of the Chesham family there was a strong dissenting element. As often happened, a man who became prosperous and ---I have already copied this section for you. Aquila and Thomas emigrated and landed at Hampton, New Hampshire, early in 1640 they were granted land in June 1640. It would be a work of supererrogation to describe the lives of these two brothers because they and their many descendants have been so carefully traced and detailed in that excellent book SEVEN GENERATIONS OF THE DESCENDANTS OF AQUILA AND THOMAS CHASE, compiled by John Carroll Chase and George Walter Chamberlain, published in `1928. It incorporates the information in the Chase Chronicle, the official publication of the Chase-Chace Family Association, the founder of which was William K Gould, a descendant of Aquila. The relevant facts about these two brothers are in pedigree No. 2. Both made wills which are quoted in the above-mentioned book which has a reproduction of a tablet in Caen stone in the New England Historical Genealogical Society's building in Boston. ------- Now I have copied from the Noble Book for all of you to decide for yourselves. Good luck to all of you Aquila Chase descendants. If you don't connect to the Chesham Chases it's really terribly sad. I have a simply wonderful picture of that very lovely and beautiful Manor House that I was hoping I could share with you all. Ginger in Az.
Hi,Dave, I will visit the site. It looks likea good one for the "CHASE most interesting and helpful sites" page that your doughty helpers are trying to compile. I believe it is useful to know that there are probably 80,000 persons with the name CHASE. All we need now is to have some mathemetician to work out:- A) How many of them are descendants of William,Aquila and Thomas B) How many persons in the US have the blood of these 3 in their veins. In the CHASE database between 19 and 20% are actually named CHASE.(1,691) If you take out spouses and their parents I would guess that the figure nears 25%. So we would have 75% with CHASE blood but with other names. The "Unknown" factor in this problem is that it is almost impossible, in my view, to estimate how many persons tracing their history have found the CHASE line fascinating to the cost of other lines in their families. It is worth considering that:- a) William (of the Winthrop Fleet) has 6,947 descendants in the database He only had 2 Children with recorded offspring b) Aquila has 1,067 descendants in the Database He had 11 Children that are recorded c) Thomas has 143 descendants in the Database He had 5 sons that are recorded. With all respect to those researching Aquila & Thomas,I may be wrong, but my personal opinion is that the fact that William is the better known in American history is a prime reason for this percieved imbalance in the numbers in the Database. Attn: Gail Frick Re: Charles S. Chase, aged 87 years, died Aug. 12, 1894 First of all, thank you, Gail, for the kind words. Secondly, I am sending this via the Chase rootsweb group so that perhaps others might have ideas to help out in your search. Don't dispair. You're very very close. I think perhaps you are just a generation away (and maybe not even that)from determining which Chase you connect with.I have several suggestions to make. Do with them what you wish. 1. I would find a LDS (Mormon) Family History Library where they have the records on the microfishe and check out the state of Maine and all of the Chase names they have listed there. Even if none of the names you see there connect up with you it might help you to locate other towns where the Chases lived and your William may have had relatives in neighboring towns that can be traced. Also, the spouse is important to look up too because he was probably married in his wife's home town. 2. I have just looked in the William Chase of Cape Cod Book that is not indexed---and it drives me nuts for that reason. They list Chases in Unity, Maine and Troy, Vasalborough, Maine. There were Chases at the same time your Chase was there it seems. That could be a lead for you. You could do the same checking in the 7 generations of Aquila and T. to see where they went from N.H. 3. The Chases married into the Soule Family (Mayflower Pilgrim) and there are Soules around Kennebunk, Maine.--even to this day as they threw an exclusive little private party for Pres. Bush some years ago and were criticized for it. (Bush has a summer home there). 4. I don't have the knowledge I would like to share with you since I don't have any direct lines who moved there---My, I wish I did though. 5. Also, the Historic Society in Portland could be of help and maybe they even have a WWW to contact. 6. In the Cape Cod Book: Joseph and Jane (Dyer) Chase were the parents of George CChase, A.B. (Bates, 1868), A.M.----Uni. Colo. 1895---Uni. of New Brunswick, 1898, Bowdoin, 1902, professor of English literature at Bates College, 1872-1894, president of Bates College and professor of psychology there, 1894-1919, who was born at Unity, Me. 15 Mar. 1844, married 12 June 1872 Emma Francette Millett of Norway, Me. and died at Lewiston, Me 27 May 1919. Those are a few ideas I have just off the top of my head and perhaps some of the rest of you have far better ideas than I do. The main thing is---keep on digging---it all will come. If you can find that he came from a small town originally then I suggest writing to the small town Librarian as Librarians simply love to do research and will undoubtedly dig around for you. One time I did this very thing while researching my Lees and low and behold if the Librarian didn't send me a newspaper article about my ancestor who was the editor of a paper in the town. That was pretty exciting. Good luck and please feel free to write again any time as I have to admit I am hooked on this hobby and love to see others interested too. Ginger in Az.
Re: Ginger's comments and notes from the Noble book on Aquila and Thomas The possibility (apparently suggested in Arthur Noble's book) of the London (from Chesham) Aquila's family (or parts thereof) being involved in the growing Baptist movement as an explanation of why (1) there is no record of the alleged son Thomas's baptism in the local (Church of England) Parish records, and (2) the son Aquila's recorded baptism in that Church did not take place until 8 years after his birth, is interesting. But without competent corroborating documentation, it must remain only an interesting possibility. (I am sorry, but I am a systems research scientist by training and experience, and a listing of acknowledgements of diverse individuals who "contributed" to a study carries no weight of proof until we know exactly what alleged "fact" each contributed in support of the conclusion, and the documented basis for it. (Many social science "researchers" are often not so bothered by a lack information exactness, but that's another issue.) Dick Chase
Derek, Thanks for the interest. I have found the Chase site and the list is great, although sometimes confusing due to the number of very advanced researchers in comparison to me. I have obtained a little more information about my Chase's, which I havn't had a chance to verify, but which fits with family lore so far. My chidren's ggrandmother was: Christine CHASE b 9/26/1898 m. Dressel Pangborn GROVER resided and died in Norwalk, Huron, OH 12/6/92 daughter of Burdette CHASE b. abt 1875 in Ashtabula, Lake, OH and Lena Runyan , daughter of George Washington RUNYAN and Carrie MESSINGER, of Huron Co., OH I believe Burdette is son of William H. CHASE b. 17 Sep 1850 Amcran, Columbia, NY d. 17 Sep 1914 Gorham, Fulton, OH and Sarah M. GRANT m. 1 Feb, 1872 Painseville, Lake, OH William is son of John W. CHASE b. 24 Oct 1820 in MA d. 5 Jan 1880 Painesville, Lake, OH and Emeline WATERS John is son of Job CHASE and Rachel WORLEY or MORLEY,. of CT? I am looking for connections and verification of this and additional information on Job, John and William, but have not found them in any of the lines on the website, so I am still searching. As you see from Christine's DOB and Burdette's marriage date, this was apparently a shotgun arrangement, and apparently Burdette did not stick around for very long, Needless to say, this was not a topic for discussion with Christine when she was alive, and thus the only information we had was Burdette's name. He apparently did not stick around very long, as Lena remarried into the CASTO family a few years later, and had a second child. The other information I received from Janelle Deelstra, who is apparently another descendent of John W. and who has been very helpful. Any further help in connecting this family will be appreciated! Hi Folks Ever wonder how many people carry the surnames we are looking for? Someone shared a Census Bureau page with me. It is fun to use. For example, I found my Meason line is so rare that I just send an e-mail to any Meason I find on the web. As a result, I have made some useful genealogical contacts. Chases, as you can see, are not as common as Smith (or White), but a lot of Chases are out there. The URL is: http://www.census.gov/genealogy/www/namesearch.html The site shows the frequency with which a given or surname appeared in a sample of 7.2 million people in 1990. They found 88,799 unique names in that sample. Sampling errors, they say, could be large in extremely rare names. Chase and Chace are not extremely rare. Aalderink was the least frequent in the 7.2 million. Smith was most common. The source: U.S. Census Bureau Here is how the Chase/Chace names came out: Names Search Results ( last ) NAME frequency rank CHASE 0.023 percent 508 out of 88,799 unique names CHACE 0.001 percent 14,957 out of 88,799 unique names I think this means there are about 80,000 Chases in the US. Okay, that is not terribly useful knowledge. Dave White
To all the Chase Clan---- Do all of you have access to the Noble book written about the Chase Family? Please let me know if you want me to copy certain passages out of it so that it might help resolve the question about Aquila and Thomas Chase being part of the Chesham clan. I am really not that concerned since I don't link up with the two but I'll try to help in any way I can to resolve the question. Do any of you have any contact with a woman professor from Kans. who has done extensive research on Aquila and Thomas.? I would have to dig around in my archives to find her name, but I met her one time at the county record office in Buckinghamshire---I believe the town was Aylesbury. she certainly was having no problem accepting the fact that Thomas and Aquila were connected to the Chesham Chase.
