In response to Loyalist or Tories, not all the Cape men who went to NB were going because they were driven out. According to some of the Cape Cod histories, many Cape men went to NB because it was closer to the fishing grounds. By the 1750's the land on the Cape was starting to show signs of exhaustion, thus many turn to farming and fishing. Nothing is as cut and dry as I have seen the conversation become on Loyalist. If the Chases were so content most of the population would be still located on the Cape. Rick Arruda
John Chase is listed on the Chase web page as being married to Urana Homer. John was the son of Nathaniel Chase and Abigail Spooner. He was married 1/10/1750 to Lovina Hammond,b.2/9/1734.She was the daughter of Thomas Hammond and Sarah Spooner. John and Lovina are my 5th great grandparents. The info is listed in Certain Comeovers, by Gov. Henry Howland Crapo. He wrote two 500 pg volumes on the family genealogy in the 1860's. Henry is the brother of my grgrgrandfather David Crapo. Joann

Okay Ginger, give us the information on how to get Nobel's book...title, etc.
Dear Derek, I agree that Reuben could not have been in NB in 1776, unless he went up there to scout out the country for arrival later. Though, in 1776, there was no way the Loyalists could have known they would be defeated and driven from the US. It seems pretty clear that Reuben, and his son Reuben went up with the spring or summer fleet, in 1783-1784. I do believe John C. Chase does have it wrong. Almost everything written in Esther Clark Wright's "Loyalists of New Brunswick" about my ancestor, John London, is incorrect.
Dear Chase's, I am not an Aquila descendant, I am a William descendant. However, when I first began my genealogy quest, I naively copied the family histories of those on the web who had Aquila as William's father! So, for a while, I did pursue Aquila. Anyway, this led me to get a copy of George Piggin's writings regarding the Chase name in Chesham, in "Tales of Old Chesham." If it were a life or death situation, I could probably find the copy amongst the stacks of papers on my desk. However, I do recall that Mr. Piggin, who was the caretaker of St. Mary's Church in Chesham, stated that the baptismal record of Aquila was on view at the church, and that hundreds of people came there every year to photograph it, as well as make futile attempts to actually purchase it. If Aquila was not a Chesham Chase - who's baptism is in the St. Mary's register? Also, while I am rambling, did anyone else immediately think "Spanish" when they first heard Aquila's name? I have heard people say it is a rare name for an Englishman, and I have also heard that it is a common name, for the same. I, myself, have never encountered the name in my British research, and have to wonder if it is not some sort of family name, who's tradition and origin is unknown to us. Feel free to comment on my thoughts. Regards, Lisa Zajkowski PS - As a humorous sidebar, Aquila in Spanish very roughly translates to "Here." Could poor Aquila's mother, after days of long, hard labor have finally cried out "It's here!" It's here!" God knows, anyone who has ever been in a long labor can appreciate that one!
Dear Junelle, Reuben Chase is my 5th Great-grandfather. As far as I am aware, Elizabeth's surname has never been discovered, and probably does not exist in any published genealogy. I have never even heard of anyone speculating on what it may have been. Please, if I am wrong, I sure would like to know! I, myself, have viewed Reuben's will, as well as the usual Loyalist stuff - ship's manifest, etc.. and I have only seen her referenced as either Elizabeth Chase or Mrs. Reuben Chase. I have never seen the marriage record - perhaps there was none found. Best of luck, Lisa Zajkowski

The name of Reubens wife is not listed in the SOME OF THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM CHASE OF ROXBURY AND YARMOUTH, MASS. It does list his children. Gladys
Junelle, sorry, the book has no wife known for Reuben 109. ISAAC5 CHASE (Isaac,4 John,3 William,2 William1), of Putnam County, N. Y., in 1747, born at Yarmouth 28 Mar. 1714, died probably at Saratoga, N. Y. He married at Harwich, 17 Nov. 1737, THANKFUL MAKER, daughter of John and Mary (Hopkins) Maker of Harwich. (The Mayflower Descendant, vol. 23, p. 56.) Isaac Chase is said to have married a second wife, by whom he had two children, Thomas and Judah. Children, order of births uncertain: i. REUBEN,6 b. 24 Nov. 1738; m. (???), who is said to have d. 7 Aug. 1825, aged 55 [sic]. He lived near Danbury, Conn., became a Tory, and migrated in 1776 to Gagetown, N. B. Children: 1. Gedaliah,7 b. 28 Nov. 1761. 2. Elizabeth, b. in 1764; m. George Miller. 3. Eben. 4. Thankful, m. 13 July 1785 Tertullas Dickinson. 5. Isaac. 6. Reuben. 7. Charlotte, m. Jeremiah Johnson. 8. Isaac is listed as No. 109 in SOME OF THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM CHASE OF ROXBURY AND YARMOUTH, MASS. Compiled by George Walter Chamberlain for John Carroll Chase. Unfortunately, I don't have the pages that cover his children and family. But, the book is in the Family Tree Maker Library. When I get a chance, I will see if it has your answer. Re: the quotes from Noble's version of the "solution "to the Aquila mystery -- before anyone gets too excited that this is indeed the answer, I would urge them to examine the collection of "facts" carefully. What is woven here is a clever tale that is partially based on well known factual records, and partially based on assumption and wishful thinking. Absolutely nothing new in the way of factual evidence is presented. By the way, the claimed "second burial" of Aquila noted in the Parish records in 1659/60 (the death and burial of Aquila the tailor are recorded in 1643/4) conveniently ignores the very real probability that this latter death was, in fact, that of the son Aquila whose 1626 baptism is noted in the Parish records. For all of you who are really weary of all this, I rest my case that the Aquila linkage shown on the Chase web site cannot be factually substantiated, and thus is very misleading. And I shall comment no further until new (real) evidence is presented. (And they all said AMEN !! ) Dick Chase
Thanks to Matt Chase we have a very beautiful front page. Thanks
Since Rex Gilman Chase is sending the "gloom and doom messages" I guess I had better follow his lead. To all of you who connect with William Chase of Cape Cod--I must say that they do not have any record of his wife's last name. It is unknown as far as I know. Many have claimed her last name was Townley but that is incorrect. Mary Townley was connected to the Chesham Chases and the Townley name was a name of "quality". (Not that all of us descendants aren't THE VERY HIGHEST QUALITY OF PEOPLE MIND YOU. William is not related to the Chesham Chases and after Rex Gilman Chase's dissertation---neither is Aquila related to the Chesham Chases. Got it folks---????? Now all of you people who are going to England this summer must rush over to Wales to dig around there ---that's still the unsolved clue we have since the Chronicles (Chase Chronicles) kept mentioning Wales as the place where the Chases---Aquila---came from . Have fun there if you go. Ginger in Az.
Good for you< John Gilman Chase--You quoted the man I mentioned some days ago on the Chase rootsweb---the President of the NEHGS only a few years ago---I believe I mentioned he was Pres. in 1989. He surely knew the true answer which you have just given. This book by Noble was published in 1967. That's too bad ---All of the Aquila descendants will not be able to claim the connection to the beautiful Manor House in Chesham . Has anyone looked in the records of the relations to the Chesham family--ie. Has anyone looked at records in Marlow, Bucks. where one of the Chases lived and was very prominent? I do wish you all well and hope you find the true answers to Aquila's link. Perhaps you should write an article for the NEHGS so that all of the other Aquila Chase descendants can learn the correct answers and not keep on and on with this belief. William of Cape Cod seemed to be much more straight forward--thank goodness. Hopefully you'll find your connection and professor in Kansas and discuss all of this. I shall have to dig out the name for you if you don't have it. Ginger in Az.
